peepinmofo
Are these guys ever gonna become decent QBs? I know it takes time to develop a QB. How long for these kids? Any GB homers know anything on Rodgers? Is he ready to step in this year if Favre gets hurt, or even next year when hes done?
DMD
The problem with Rodgers is that it is very hard to tell given the miniscule amount of NFL playing time he has gotten. Alex Smith has some body of work to guage though he had to start behind a horrible line with sub-par receivers. Neither of those are particularly upgraded this season though SF has tried to address the line to some extent with the acquisition of Larry Allen but he's just a guard and not a tackle. You never really know with young QBs until you know. Neither of these QBs have great lines and may not for a season or two. It is pretty hard to start a career inside a bad offense, so while their immediate future looks rather dim, it does not neccessarily mean that they won't eventually get better. It would just take time to happen - and to see happen.
SteelBunz
2nd yr QBs....way too early to tell most of the time. Especially if they haven't been in the game playing that much as DMD said, Peep. LOL...with your Avi...and quite a few 3rd and 4th year guys around the league supposedly making starts this year...I'd be more worried (or at least wondering) about how guys like Losman, Grossman, Rivers, Simms and Frye are going to work out. Simms was baptized by fire last year....and faired pretty well. Rivers? Still too little to go on but at least he sat behind a good QB and a decent offense to step in and be successful. Frye? This is a dicey one really. Dilfer is currently there to back him up....but Dilfer is unhappy in Cleveland and has been talking to SFO to back up Smith. Frye is pretty green to not have a decent backup. Grossman and Losman I have real questions about. Both have capable backups. This can be a double-edged sword. The organization breaths better, but the heat is on them to perform...now. But so far...I haven't been all that impressed. The Eli Mannings, Big Bens and Carson Palmers of the world are few and far between, IMO. Ben and Eli were thrown in to the wolves in their first year and faired d@mn well. Carson had the best situation by far.....Cinci stuck to the schedule. He watched behind Kitna having a career year, but there was never any doubt he was starting in his second year. And I have to say this....he IS the best of those three at this time, but he also as a year more under his belt.

Jackass
read a quote that said 'Smith is throwing the cr#p out of the ball' in offseason workouts. I'm not really sure what that means, but i guess it sounds encouraging.

Randall
Really haven't heard much about Rogers but gossip. There were reports he wouldn't be a good QB, but they made no efforts VIA free agency to get anyone. As DMD has said we haven't seen him play enough to warrant anything. There he didn't play well, but that doesn't really say anything. We may see more this year.

He looked serviceable in a bad situation against the Ravens. Short term, Smith will get every chance in SF. Slightly longer term, I think GB is building from a better base and will be further along when Rodgers takes the helm in '07 - and he's less likely to end up shell-shocked in a bad offense like a Tim Couch was. This guy has sick talent; all Smith really had to do was chuck it up and Lloyd would make a play at it. Mark it down: Lloyd is going to be a fantastic addition to the 'Skins. Smith is smart, and has an accurate arm. And he can actually run/scramble a bit. I think he'll eventually be a solid QB. Letting Lloyd go = dumb. Drafting Davis = smart. He would have had two nice options if the Niners would have kept Lloyd. Antonio Bryant is a #2 NFL WR at best; good luck with that. Not much to say on Rodgers. Yet another bust from Cal? Yet another bust from Cal? 1453244[/snapback] I have to agree that Rodgers has bust written all over him. But I have to disagree on your take on the 49ers WR moves (and this from an avowed Niner hater): I'd take Bryant over Lloyd. Still, I think Alex Smith will continue to struggle... and will likely never live up to his #1 overall pick billing. I heard several "experts" say that Smith would have been no better than the 4th QB taken had he been in this year's draft class.

I was never that impressed with him college. He never did anything that wowed me. In general, I don't like the way Tedford teaches his players to play the quarterback position. That way of thinking and mechanics (bringing the ball so high and the release point) does not prepare a guy for the NFL. We have sorta seen it with Kyle Boller, all though he has changed many of his flaws. It has taken time though. I really like Smith for some reason though. I don't see him ever becoming a franchise quarterback but I see him having success, especially with a guy like Vernon Davis on his team. The guy has mobility and he is pretty smart. Give him a line and then let's judge him.

I know Losman should be my main concern, and he is. If I had to grab any of those QBs, itd be him. Well, out of the likes of Smith Rodgers and Losman. Palmer, Eli, and Ben are way ahead of them.
