i wouldnt think this spells the end for mike bell just yet. that was one of those helmet-to-the-elbow hits that NO ONE hangs on to the ball after.

in 2002 Portis fumbled constantly during pre-season action...

by week 4 he took over and the rest was history..

From yesterday afternoon before the game:

Denver Broncos rookie RB Mike Bell, the team's current starting running back, has been given a list of priorities - no one ranked above the other. "The first thing he's got to do is hang on to the ball," Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said. "We've already seen what he can do running the ball. But the first thing we want to see is, can he pick up the blitz?" Shanahan then paused and smiled at what he just said. "He's got two first things that he has to do," Shanahan said. "My main concern is doing the right thing by protecting Jake (QB Plummer) and holding on to the ball," Bell said. "Those are the two necessities. Protect, protect, protect and holding on to the ball. After that, it's just running hard."

When the coach says right before the game "Don't you dare f'n fumble", and you fumble on your 5th carry, there really has to be some kind of consequence. You'd be a terrible coach if there wasn't.

He'll probably end up losing the starting role, but the fact that he was given a shot means he is almost sure to see some live action, giving him more opportunities to steal back that starting role throughout the year. We'll see if he deserves it or not though. Fumblers suck.

Tatum Bell dominated last night while Dayne was given all plays that ran right next to his center. Mike should be the #2 right now.

Shanahan said it's one of the things he was interested in seeing when he promoted Bell to the top spot in the backfield over Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne.

He wanted to see how the 23-year- old dealt with the move, which certainly brought him plenty of additional attention before and after the game as well.

"He deserved to work with (the starters) and start the game, with all he had done in our practices, but you do like to see how a guy reacts," Shanahan said. "There's more pressure, but better for him to see that now than later." …

The Broncos returned to the field Sunday for an afternoon practice, and Bell once again lined up with the starters as the Broncos headed toward a preseason game against the Titans on Saturday night at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Sounds to me like Shanahan has long term plans for M Bell, especially wanting M Bell to see the pressure in the bigs now in the preseason rather than later.

M Bell is still the #1 RB in DEN this week despite the fumble. Would a fumbling problem get Bell moved backwards in the depth chart? You bet it would - Shanahan hates fumblers, and it's what kept Clinton Portis behind Olandis Gary in the depth chart in Portis' rookie year despite Portis showing so much ability. IF M Bell shows he has a fumbling problem, the same thing will most likely happen to him. One fumble struggling for extra yardage and then a D player putting his helmet on the football doesn't constitute a fumbling problem yet - at least Shanahan doesn't seem to think so.

However, M Bell is currently the #1 RB in DEN after the first preseason game. He's gotten past his first hurdle without losing his spot. That means he'll have the #1 RB spot vs TEN this weekend unless he flat out stinks up the field this week. If he gets through Preseason week 3 & maintains the #1 RB spot, he'll be the guy who starts week 1 in the regular season, and then barring injury he'll be very difficult to dislodge.

So people jumping off the bandwagon after this weekend? Well, suit yourselves. And lofl @ the comment about liking Cobbs better than M Bell. Right now Cobbs is a longshot to even make the roster.

I just spoke with a friend last night who has been going to Denver's training camp for the past couple of weeks. (He's retired, nothing else to do) He confirmed that M. Bell has looked absolutely fantastic and could be a real find for Denver. Just what I heard folks.

don't doubt it. he's gotta hold onto the ball though - sounds like that's his only potential downfall.

Hmmm, does your woman know what you spend your time looking for on the web? I'm sure you tell her it is FF....

:D

The Good Lord could have made cans any shape he chose. That he made them so fine looking obviously meant that they had purpose beyond dispensing nutrients to young'uns. In fact, it would be downright sacriligious not to admire those fine objects.
