Saints TE usage

Wow. Wish I had picked up Johnson when he was laying there on the draft board. I must admit I was a bit annoyed to see the Bush passes going to the TE over the middle... :D

Now was Brees using the TE heavily 'cause that was all he had, or is this part of the Aint's game this year? What do ya'll think? :D

I think a little of both. Not really a fluke, as Johnson has shown before that he can be a decent pass-catching tight end. Wasn't it two years ago that he had a very good season with the Niners? That was pre-Gore and pre-Davis, and he almost became their #1 offensive weapon, as silly as that sounds. If I remember correctly, his biggest problem has been staying healthy. He seems to have a knack of finding a passing lane where the QB can get him the ball.

On the other hand, I think last night was a bit of an aberration... At one point, I think he caught passes on three straight plays. I doubt that happens in every game this season. In fact, it might not happen again. I think Brees was struggling to find time to look far down field (Saints really didn't attempt many deep pass plays, much less complete them), so the next impulse as a QB is to look short and see who you can dump the ball off to. Bush and Colston (who caught a lot of those over-the-middle 7-10 yard passes last year) were probably receiving more attention last night, due to the fact that Dungy and his defense realize that they would much rather give up the short pass to Johnson than a big play to one of the Saints' other weapons. Not to mention Henderson is not at 100%.

Bottom line: I think Johnson will be targeted maybe a half dozen times per game, give or take a pass or two. I would expect him to catch around 45 balls this year, and probably 3-4 TD's. I think he makes for a very nice backup TE, but I would not want him as my #1. I think he'll finish in the 10-15 range overall for TE's.

That's pretty much it.

The Colts were playing so far back in coverage later in the game that the little dump-off was open as much as they wanted it. It was garbage time.

+1. Last night was an abberation, confounded by some dismal play-calling.

Johnson's decent and showed some ability, though. Nice waiver wire pick-up for bye week filler. I'm looking forward to seeing how he'll be used against CAR this year.
