Azazello1313
Just a couple of defensive unit stats that were posted on the Saints forum... Rushing and Passing td's allowed were: 1986 - 11/21, 1987 - 6/25, 1988 - 7/19, 1989 - 10/23, 1990 - 8/21 1991 - 6/12, 1992 - 8/13 The defense never allowed more than 11 rushing td's in an entire season. Take a look at 91 & 92 total td's They had a streak in 1989 of 90 consecutive games of keeping a rusher under 100 yards and in 1991 they didn't allow an opposing offense to score a touchdown for five and half games (Tampa scored in the 2nd half of their game). that was an awesome defense, and no doubt it was all about those linebackers. problem is, they lost in the first round of the playoffs every year (if they even got there). that just makes it a little tough to put them ahead of some of the other units being discussed, and call them the best unit ever. Which is one of the main reasons they are so underrated among the LB greats and why you will never see any of them in the Pro Bowl. It's a shame to be judged not by how they played, but by how the offense could not generate enough points for them to win in the playoffs. justin
The excuse that they didn't have an offense just doesn't cut it. If they trully were to be considered the greatest, then they would have overcome that. Just look at Ray and the Ravens core - they did it. The NO core were a great group of talent, but not the best ever. Edited March 22, 2008 by justin

max
Top to bottom- Lambert: 9 Pro Bowls, H of F inductee Ham: 8 Pro Bowls, H of F inductee Russell: 7 Pro Bowls ISMHO, Carl Banks takes his crew out of the running. The Saints crew has fewer Pro Bowls and no H of F ers. FWIW my vote as well. additional accomplishments for Lambert and Ham: Lambert - 1974 Defensive ROY, 1976 Defensive Player of the year, All 70's Team, All 80's Team, 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. Ham - 3rd most regular season INT's in history among LB's, All 70's Team, 75th Anniversary All-Time Team
