Swashbucklers
Supreme Court Ruling Living on Lake Michigan and spending a lot of my free time fishing, I am wondering what affect these fish will have on the ecosystem of the Great Lakes and fishing (particularly the salmon fishing). Does anyone know more about this invasive species and what kind of havoc it will raise? Edited January 19, 2010 by Swashbucklers

Does anyone know more about this invasive species and what kind of havoc it will raise? they will pretty much destroy the eco system and make boating very dangerous. They have them in the Old Man but so far they have not gotten up to the Croix.( main river i fish).

cre8tiff
they will pretty much destroy the eco system and make boating very dangerous. They have them in the Old Man but so far they have not gotten up to the Croix.( main river i fish). They are a hazard on the Illinois. There are multiple youtube videos out there that show them rocketing across boats. Heck, there is a new redneck sport out there, "carp skeet", shooting the fish on the fly. bpwallace49
Pretty dangerous threat to sport fishing in the great lakes. A very invasive species that devours everything in sight and pose a danger to boaters. Chicago just did a "mass kill" to see how far Asian Carp have advanced towards Lake Michigan. They are going to try to poison the things to stop them coming up the Mississippi any further. They've actually killed people by leaping out of the water and hitting them on the head. Who knew you need to wear a fishing helmet? It's boat motors that they react to apparently.

They have traveled through Illinois from the Mississippi and are almost to Lake Michigan. There is an "electric fence" that is supposed to keep them out, b ut the damn thing doesnt work very well. http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2009/no...n-carp-14-nov14
Scooby
I don;t know what type of carp is found in TX waters, but my dad just throws them on the bank when he catches them, says they're trash fish. I did see a recipe for carp in my mom's Polish cookbook...poor Poles would eat anything I guess ;)yuck!! Two polish women are working in the fields pulling carrots. One pulls out a massive 10 inch long carrot that is at least 2 inches in diameter and says to her friend, "wow, this reminds me of husband" Her friend looks at her in awe and says, "oh, you must be so happy, such length and girth." The other woman looks at her friend and says, "no, so dirty" How can you tell when a polish woman is on her period? She only has on one sock. rocknrobn26
I remember back in the 60's when the Sea Lamprey was supposed to wreak havoc when it invaded Lake Michigan from the St. Lawrence seaway. I'm sure it caused problems, but no where near the proportions they stated at the time. This Carp is a nasty MoFo, no argument, but as the Lamprey, it may not cause the problems that are predicted. I know that Sconny, Mich and Minny have filed lawsuits against IL to prevent the onslaught by closing off rivers w/ access to LM, but I'm also sure it's more hype than reality. And frankly, the damage is prolly already done. Why do states sue states? Is it a lawyer union thing? I guess I'm just a little tired of Chicken Little running around yelling his line and people are listening and believing. 80% of the emails I get about doom and gloom are BS or at the very least overblown. When are we all going to just calm down?

I'm sure it caused problems, but no where near the proportions they stated at the time. uh: In the 1940s and 1950s, sea lamprey predation contributed to the collapse of the lake trout, whitefish, and chub fisheries. Annual catches of lake trout in Lakes Huron and Superior dropped from 15 million pounds to 300,000 pounds by the early 1960s http://www.biology.duke.edu/bio217/2005/nc...%20lamprey.html The lampreys are under control now, but it took quite some time to make it so... why let the same thing happen with the asian carp? Shut the locks.

When are we all going to just calm down? I agree with this to an extent, but if we have the ability to stop a problem before it becomes a problem, shouldn't that be done? In the article that Big John linked, it stated that the state of Illinois shouldn't have been sued, but the corp of engineers. Would that have made it any different? Are these other states asking for monetary gains, or do they just not want this invasive species to destroy the fishing industry? Again, I am just learning about this problem and am looking to gain information about it.
wiegie
Are these other states asking for monetary gains, or do they just not want this invasive species to destroy the fishing industry? I think they are only suing to have the locks separating the Mississippi River system with the Great Lakes system to be closed. To the best of my knowledge, they are not asking for any money. Chavez
I think they are only suing to have the locks separating the Mississippi River system with the Great Lakes system to be closed. Hmmm, let's see - the lawsuit could be ended and the environmental concerns eliminated simply by closing the locks to the ARTIFICIAL waterway that the carp are coming upstream in. Why wouldn't someone implement this simple, easy solution? BECAUSE THEY'RE F*CKING ASS HOLES FROM ILLINOIS.
