Q&A with PRIEST HOLMES

Nov 02, 2005, 3:48:20 PM

OAKLAND CONFERENCE CALL

Q: How are you doing after the head injury sustained last week?

HOLMES: “We are still waiting on some of the diagnosis of the images from the MRI but I definitely know once that is done we will have a better idea of how exactly I can proceed with the rest of the week. I am feeling good. I mean it’s one of those things where it’s not an injury where you can physically see and determine. It’s one where you have to go through different tests then once that is determined they will do everything to protect me but make sure I can get out there as quickly as possible.”

Q: Will you be able to play this Sunday vs. Oakland?

HOLMES: “I am not sure because most of that stuff has not been determined. I know the doctors are taking every precaution in looking at all of the images from the MRI and once that is done they are going to give me the word let’s get suited up.”

On the running back tandem of Holmes and Larry Johnson:

HOLMES: “Having gotten into the rhythm of which we know we are capable of doing but as of right now I think we settled into the situation in knowing that we can really help each other out speaking of RB Larry (Johnson) and myself that we really can take advantage of utilizing both of our running styles.”

On his and Johnson’s running styles compared to other running backs:

HOLMES: “I know there are two types: front runner running backs where they get off to a very quick start and they slow down towards the end of the game. Then there are running backs that play pretty much vanilla at the beginning of the game and then really start pouring it on in the third and fourth. I think with me it’s more as the game goes on I definitely get stronger and get more confident in the blocking schemes and reading the offensive line. I think that in terms of any running back they always ideally would like anywhere from 18 to 23 carries but for us Larry and myself we are not going to hit those numbers every Sunday. It depends on who gets hot the fastest and then just the consistency offensive line springing us out of the backfield.”

Q: What are your thoughts on the Raiders defense?

HOLMES: “I think they’ve got some young guys that have stepped up and are definitely making tackles. They are showing up on the production lists in terms of solo tackles and they are making big plays. I think the defense and offense for the Raiders are just a team that when coming to play here in Arrowhead it’s just such a huge battle and it’s a matter of who can apply the most pressure throughout the entire game because the game goes back and forth just because of the rivalry.”

Q: Do you feel more confident playing at home at Arrowhead?

HOLMES: “I believe we are definitely confident. I know we came back and got a big win versus the Washington Redskins. But the Philadelphia game knowing that we had jumped out on them so fast and then knowing that the nail in the coffin for us came with the four turnovers offensively and it really put a sour taste in our mouth knowing that we had an opportunity there that we let slip through fingers. I really believe that this game is going to be a great game and the pressure will be applied against the Oakland Raiders.”

Q: What are your goals for the season?

HOLMES: “Well definitely if we can pull off this win on Sunday is going to give us an opportunity to have our record at 5-3 and that would be huge in terms of knowing that the next division games will be played in Arrowhead and knowing that a lot of that fate rests in our own hands. There are just a number of things we want to do at the turn after eight games ending up better than 4-4 and having a record of 5-3.”

Q: Are you satisfied with where you are as a team?

HOLMES: “Definitely because you know we really have done the things we are really supposed to do so far in the AFC. We have kept ourselves in striking position in our division. We have beaten some of the other AFC teams. It has really given us an opportunity that you know when you look at the stats and you look at where we are ranked right now it puts a good spin on our situation because we know we can go out and win some ball games and that even though the playoffs are not made right now at the midweek of the season definitely at the end I think we will be coming on a lot stronger.”

Q: Is the AFC West division more brutal than the rest of the NFL:

HOLMES: “I don’t think necessarily brutal because there is tons of talent in the NFL and I think that now it’s evenly spread throughout the teams. You can look at a team like the Cincinnati Bengals that now has become a threat to a lot of teams and definitely leading in their division and your not used to seeing teams like that. Even looking at San Diego what type of job they did last year in winning in the AFC. Teams that predominately you are not used to seeing having a long history of winning those teams are stepping up and winning because they have the talent. They have more of an even spread financially with these teams that pay these top players that are coming out of college and free agency. The AFC definitely has one of the toughest schedules and definitely just the rivals that are set in stone from years before I even got in the league they are here and that is what makes this division and this side of the conference so tough.”

Q: Do teams have an advantage when they play new or young players?

HOLMES: “I can say that from my experience knowing that when I came pretty much into the league in ‘97 and then getting my start in ‘98 it’s just the appearance of seeing a new body on the field where in your mind you feel like you can dominate this person but not seeing enough film on this individual can always surprise you and then that individual can be a lot more talented or just being in the right place at the right time. So I think right now what they are doing is they have players that have not been exposed and not been seen enough and they are making plays and instead of waiting for them to be exposed. They are saying hey I am going to take advantage of my opportunity no one knows what I can do that there is not much film so whatever I do is going to be new versus my opponent.”

Q: Is the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry still a big deal?

HOLMES: “Absolutely here in Kansas City we have families that are separated on this week because there are family members that are Raiders fans and there are family members that are long time Chiefs fans. You know that split in the family that always happens around this time whenever there is a Chiefs and Raiders game but after Sunday that family will be right back together but for this Sunday they definitely will be separated.”

Q: Is there a different feel this week since it’s a rivalry game?

HOLMES: “I think right now when you play tough games and have a big rival game all the way back in high school I think all coaches seem to get more impatient because they want for everything to be perfect. They want for everyone to show up on time. They don’t want any loose screws going on. They don’t want anyone being hurt on that week but unfortunately in the NFL those things you can’t control so you know we have different types of things that are going on in different scenarios. QB Trent Greens situation that’s going on with this family. It’s just a number of things that can happen in a really big week that you have to be prepared for but I think ultimately a coach can handle it especially if he has the right type of players with the right mindset.”

On the rivalry:

HOLMES: “Definitely for other teams but just the rivalry between the Raiders and ourselves and Denver and ourselves are just teams that go back so many years that for families that have shared their tickets down from their great-grandfathers down to the youngest son down to the nephews and nieces. I think that is just what is in the air. The aura that’s in the air is one that makes everyone competitive and they really want to see the Kansas City Chiefs win.”

From Rotoworld . . .

Priest Holmes wasn't sure Wednesday if he'd be available to play this weekend.

He's listed as questionable, but did practice. "I am not sure because most of that stuff has not been determined," Holmes cryptically said Wednesday. But practicing is a good sign. Nov. 2 - 6:30 pm et

disclaimer: i am an LJ owner.

I read from Vermeil's QA that Priest still had a headache as of Tuesday. Flying to CA to meet w/ a specialist and missing practice until Friday doesn't sound good to me. I'm starting LJ vs OAK over Curtis Martin vs SD this weekend. Priest may be recovered after this week, but I'd be worried each week from here on out if I owned him.

What a mess for Holmes/Johnson owners....

KC papers are saying Holmes did not practice Thursday and is most likely out for Sunday....

OAK papers are saying Vermeil was quoted that Holmes will be upgraded from questionable to probably and should be a green light to play this weekend....

Which is it?

I'm sure that this will be come clearer prior to kickoff on Sunday.....

My money says he will play in a normal role and get most of the carries....

It was known earlier that Holmes would miss today's practice because he was going to CAL to get re-examined. Not sure why "he missed Thursday's practice" suddenly has him labled as out for this weekend. I have not heard of or seen any results from his examination yet, so the talk of him being "out" is jumpng to conclusions IMO.

Disclaimer - I own both Holmes and Johnson and will decide who to start when the results of his tests are made public.

The Chiefs enter their home game with Oakland Sunday with a season-high 11 players listed on the injury report. Included in the 11 is starting RB Priest Holmes (questionable-concussion). He was forced from Sunday's game in San Diego and is awaiting further neurological tests to receive clearance to play this week. He sat out Wednesday's session and was in southern California Thursday to receive the additional tests. Holmes was mistakely listed as practicing on Wednesday when he, in fact, did not.

Head coach Dick Vermeil is optimistic Holmes will be available Sunday and that the second opinion will simply verify that nothing major is wrong.

Holmes has teamed this year with #2 RB Larry Johnson to form perhaps the league's most productive running tandem, but the Chief offense is definitely more dangerous with Holmes in uniform.

I agree with that.....

If Priest is a go for the weekend than you must start him......

I honestly got really lucky and in the 8th round had to take a chance on Larry Johnson.....

Being greedy here I would love to start him and see him getting all of the carries but I think that is highly unlikely.....

I have to choose between him and Rudi Johnson against BAL....

Honestly I may give Larry Johnson the start even if Priest plays and is good to go.....

Against OAK he may score even not getting the start and I am concerned that Rudi has not looked good and against BAL.....Yuck!

Will have to wait and see

Don't be surprised if they don't say anything until game-time because of gameplanning purposes...

Sources? What sources have confirmed he won't play?

I just do not beleive it until we hear something from ESPN or from Vermeil.....

I still say he plays on Sunday and honestly I think he gets close to full load!

Just my opinion although right now it looks like all news is pointing the other way....

We'll still just have to wait and see, who knows he is back in KC today and he could practice!

If he practices today HE PLAYS! I beleive anyway!
