No pr0n on Sony.

I think it's a win for VHS over Beta HD-DVD over Blu-Ray. :D

nah Blu Ray has a place since it is able to hold more info then HD DVD...also read there is a chance that going forward studios may be layering both HDDVD and BLURay on the same disc....plus BluRay evidently has the plus that from a software standpoint fitting more info on it then HD Dvd is gonna help it

Wow, this in no way should be construed as an endoresement by me for pron (heh heh heh :D ) but that is a giant, monumental mistake of a decision by Sony. I think you're right Tim that it will indeed ensure that blu ray never succeeds. There are just way too many people out there that secretly (or not so secretly) enjoy watching pron in the privacy of their homes.

Blu Ray players will play reg DVDs and some Blu Ray players will even upconvert so it really isnt an issue...except for TimC and the pervs :D

Wasn't the same thing true of Sony Mini-disc versus CD-Rom?

EDIT: Which is often forgotten. This would actually make Sony 0-4, considering Beta, Mini-disc, the TV Format they came out with to compete with HDTV, and now Blu-Ray.

A big mark on the nose of the Blu-Ray, is the PS3's ability to play Blu ray and have Linux Yellow Dog installed on separate partition has allowed the dumping of Blu ray movie and game files onto 3rd party HDD's.

Sony has shot itself in the foot, as Blu ray was thought to be impossible to copy. While game and movie files have been dumped onto HDD's , there is yet to be an emulator developed for playback. No doubt something is in the works, especially since Sony is allowing game downloads to run off the PS3 HDD.

HD DVD has not been hacked yet, so the myth of the Blu Ray is just that.

It sounds like neither has been really hacked yet. No doubt that in 6 months, they both will be. The illusion of copy protection never lasts very long and isn't a determining factor for consumers anyway.

The Blu-ray holds like 40% more data. That's the big difference to me. Would you rather have 15 GB or 25 GB?

Who care how much it holds? If I buy an HD movie on DVD, I want the movie in HD on one single side of a DVD. As long as the format holds that, I don't care how much is left.

I REALLY hate all the extra crap on a DVD. It cost them $$$ to make it, so that's more they'll charge me for it. I'm paying for the movie, take the freakin' previews and extra crap out and just play the movie as soon as I put the disk in.

thats just it though these 2 formats arent just going to be for movies...it will move into all software etc....just like 5 1/4" Floopy gave way to the 3 1/2" floppy to the CD/Rom to CDR/W to DVD/R/W on computers...Blu-Ray or HDDvd will be the next drive to make its way to the PC

:D I disagree.

I love that extra stuff (well, not the previews). I love special features and audio commentary and deleted scenes and outtakes and all that crap.

The movie "Rat Race" would have been a complete waste of time as a rental if it weren't for the outtake reel.

The 1st alternate ending to Suicide Kings is the only one that actually made any sense to me, so I'm glad I watched it.

Watching the behind the scenes stuff on weird movies like Brick and Donnie Darko offered real insight into the process behind the movie that made me enjoy it even more.

I could go on... but I love extra stuff on DVDs.

imo that is why BluRay wont die, it may not win but it will at least coexsist, and as I stated earlier there is word that studios are going to put out MultiFormat Discs later in 2007....supposedly I think LG was supposed to be introducing the 1st MULTI Format player at CES this yr...not sure if they did or not

Suicide Kings is a great flick(i will have to watch the alternate ending now)

I just ordered The Wild and Black Hawk Down on Blu-Ray from buy.com(got a wonderful $30 off my order so 2 titles for 19.97 delivered is sweet)...those are supposed to be 2 of the better Blu-Ray titles so I am pretty jazzed to watch them

Still don't care. Hard drives are still much faster, and much of the common stuff gets loaded onto a hard drive anyway. Maybe it will matter in 3-5 years, but yet an other standard will be out or in the works by then.

I still think there is a threashold that 95% of movies/apps need. Beyond that, I don't care.

A good story from about six months ago that backs up TimC ... I have no idea why Sony made the same mistake with Betamax and they are doing it again ... (there was also something on the avsforum recently about the first releases of pron coming on HD-DVD)link

Just as in the 1980s, when the Betamax and VHS video formats were battling it out for supremacy, the pornography industry will likely play a big role in determining which of the two blue-laser DVD formats — Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD — will be the winner in the battle to replace DVDs for high-definition content.

Ron Wagner, director of IT operations at E! Entertainment Television Inc., in Los Angeles, said his company has already chosen the Blu-ray Disc format, in large part because of talk in the porn industry favoring it over rival HD-DVD.

Wagner said that while attending last year’s National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual conference in Las Vegas, more than one panel discussed “several major players in the porn industry going the Blu-ray route.” He said the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD rivalry was also the buzz around NAB 2006 last month.

“If you look at the VHS vs. Beta standards, you see the much higher-quality standard dying because of [the porn industry’s support of VHS],” he said. “The mass volume of tapes in the porn market at the time went out on VHS.”

E! Entertainment is using Blu-Ray discs primarily for Sony’s XDCam applications for acquisition of television programming materials. The television network, which has more than 85 million subscribers to its celebrity gossip and entertainment news, said it is not considering optical formats for long-term data archiving, but will stick with magnetic tape for now.

The pornography industry, which generates an estimated US$57 billion in annual revenue worldwide, has always been a fast leader when it comes to the use of new technology, according to analysts.

Porn studio Digital Playground, which claims to have produced the largest number of high definition movies in the industry over the past three years, said it is choosing Blu-ray Disc for all of its “interactive” films because of its greater capacity. It also selected Blue-ray because Sony chose the format for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) box, due out in November.

The co-founder of Los Angeles-based Digital Playground, who goes by the one-word name “Joone,” said the fact that Sony chose Blu-ray guarantees his studio an instant home audience.

“PlayStation 3 is going to be the Trojan horse that will get a lot of numbers into the home theater systems — the living rooms,” said Joone, who is also a movie director. “Technology-wise we’ve chosen Blu-ray, which doesn’t mean we won’t support both formats … but as far as having really cool technology and a lot of storage for future proof, Blu-ray is a good format.”

Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD are the new optical-disc formats that are positioned as replacements for DVDs with high-definition content.

Blu-ray is not only backed by entertainment giant Sony, but Panasonic, LG Electronics, Philips Electronics and movie studios Disney and Fox. Blu-ray offers storage up to 50GB capacity, or up to nine hours of high-definition content. In contrast, HD-DVD has 30GB capacity and is supported by companies like Toshiba, NEC and Warner Home Video.

Paul O’Donovan, an analyst with Gartner Inc., said pornography’s support of either DVD format will be a “strong factor” to the uptake of the technology by the general marketplace, but even more critical is Sony’s adoption of the technology.

O’Donovan said even though initially the Blu-ray format will be more expensive and will come after that of HD-DVD, the sheer support it is receiving from the entertainment industry, including pornography studios, will catapult it to a victory within a range of 18 months to five years.

Steve Hirsch, head of the adult film studio Vivid Entertainment, said he’s currently using the HD-DVD format because it was the first to come out, but his studio will begin burning to the Blu-ray format as soon as it’s available.

“The adult industry has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. We don’t have any theatrical distribution issues nor do we have big box retailers, like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster, to cater to. We’re forced to find distribution wherever we can,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch, who founded Vivid Entertainment in 1984, said the porn industry — just as in the 1980s — will have a big influence on the outcome of the latest high-definition video format wars. In the 1980s, Hirsch said VHS tapes started selling for $50 a piece and Betamax went for $55. “Therefore we pushed VHS harder, and in that sense we did have something to do with VHS winning out,” said Hirsch, whose studio pulls in an estimated $100 million in revenue a year.

“It was the adult industry who jumped right in and were putting movies on both VHS and Beta. We pushed the actual technology more than anyone else,” he said. “The adult industry has always been ahead when comes to technology.”

But not everyone believes the format war will be determined by the porn industry. Steve Duplessie, founder of research firm Enterprise Strategy Group, in Milford, Mass., and a Computerworld columnist, said the porn industry’s influence over the fate of VHS and the upcoming high-def DVD formats is overstated. Duplessie said VHS ultimately won over Betamax because Betamax was a proprietary format owned by Sony, while VHS was more open.

“I love the whole pornography concept simply because porn is still the number one money-making use of the Internet. But I don’t believe the porn industry will drive the format. Like any other industry, it will supply what the consumer wants,” he said.

I love the extras on DVDs. I just watched Clerks X with the commentary track. Great stuff. I'll also echo the Donnie Darko extras were great as well. I couldn't stand Brick. I barely made it through the movie.

As far as HD-DVD and Blu Ray, I'm not convinced either will be hugh. I still think it will be a niche format like SACD and DVD Audio. I love me some high def, but for most people DVD is "good enough". CDs were a great leap forward from tapes. Many people think CDs are "good enough" when compared with SACD. People also don't like the idea of replacing all of their old DVDs with a new format.

Of course, if the 360 HD DVD player drops in price or goes on sale, I'll pick one up. I can get the discs from Netflix for no extra charge. I just won't be able to "backup" the discs for future viewing.

see but unlike format changes in the past the new players will play the old DVDs so you dont lose your collection like you did with your 8 Tracks :D

But keep in mind, 20 years ago Apple had a better product than Windows, but because of a poor marketing strategy only a small percentage of users today have Apple computers.
