Flyeaglesfly
I feel this is a very week FA class, but Mega Bucks being thrown at average & below average players! Dennis Northcutt, Lenard Davis, Drew Bennett! I can't wait see the cap hits these teams will take when they cut these guys in two years! Bronco Billy
There are some teams that are outstanding at managing the cap, and then there are some teams that just don't seem to understand it, or want to understand it. The teams that make no effort to understand the ramifications of the cap will never be legitimate contenders.
xMRogers
Truth is, the "mega-money" we think about isn't megamoney anymore - $7m a year for an a player used to be superstar money, but with NFL revenues skyrocketing so the cap doing the same, that level is goign to be reached by guys that are just above average... Flyeaglesfly
Here is another example of an other team that overpayed for an average player 2 years ago. Lamont Jordan Teams that have money and try to build through FA, will never compete for a Super Bowl. Everyone talks about how the NFL is a copy cat league, then how come nobody tries to build their team and run their cap like the Pats & Eagles? It makes no sense to me! broncosn05
Lenard Davis, I haven't looked at the other two in very much depth but this move was a bidding war between WASH and DAL for a player who is a constant failure.
Big Red
The teams that do well are the ones that sign their own studs before they leave (as stated by Az), and the ones that let their average guys leave and get the $$$ elsewhere. Two years ago, the Ravens let Edgerton Hartwell go and took a lot of flack in the local media for it. He did nothing for 2 years in Atlanta except cash big paychecks, and he just got cut. Adalius Thomas just cashed in with New England, so the Ravens re-signed his younger backup. Just because you have the money doesn't mean you have to spend it. Fantasy Jesus
This years overpaying has blown past ridiculous. The 49ers made Nate Clements the highest paid defensive player in NFL history when he isn't even the best at his position. A 1st round bust named Leonard Davis received more money this offseason than a proven pro-bowl offensive lineman, Steve Hutchinson, did last offseason. Now Wes Welker is getting 7 years and 38 million.
cdrudge
I kind of chuckled at Peter King's MMQB 10 Things I Think I Think: e. I can just feel Mike Holmgren fuming. He's thinking: Last year we let Steve Hutchinson go for $7 million a year, and now $7 million is the going rate for a guard who can walk and chew gum at the same time. f. I mean it: Mike Holmgren is not happy about this.

Flyeaglesfly
If a team is 25 Million under the cap, do they have to spend it or can they save it & put it in their pocket? Is there a certain % of the cap a team has to spend each year?
PantherDave
yup. the smart teams will be the ones who leave themselves enough space in the next few years to re-sign their OWN studs before they hit the open market. Exactly what the Panthers are doing this offseason-taking care of the players under their own roof and the nucleus of the team. While I'm still fumed at Hurney for restructuring with Morgan, he is playing this weak year of FA as they should. Like I said in another thread, they don't even have any visits scheduled with any FA. Is there a certain % of the cap a team has to spend each year? (1) They don't have to spend to equal the cap. (2) IIRC, there is a salary floor in the NFL, but it's very low. Thomas was able to walk and was not franchised was the Ravens didn't have enough cap room. If you think the Ravens felt good about letting him walk, you're crazy. According to the numbers in King's MMQB, I'm liking this deal. The Welker dollars is a headscratcher though. More than the money Why Thomas chose Pats, and more free-agency notes Posted: Monday March 5, 2007 1:38AM; Updated: Monday March 5, 2007 12:38PM One guy might have been underpaid in Lunatic 2007 Market Dollars: Adalius Thomas. He signed with New England for five years and $35.04 million. The breakdown, according to Management Council documents obtained Sunday night: • Signing bonus: $12 million in 2007. • Option bonus: $8 million payable in 2008, applied for cap reasons in equal $2 million increments in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. • Salaries: $900,000 in '07, $900,000 in '08, $1.9 million in '09, $4.9 million in '10 and $5.9 million in '11. • Workout bonuses: $107,000 annually if he participates in the Patriots' offseason workout program in Foxboro. • Cap numbers: In succession, beginning this year, $3.4 million, $5.4 million, $6.4 million, $9.4 million, $10.4 million. I say "might have been underpaid" because there is always a danger that a unique, great player in one system might not translate to that kind of player in another system. But I'll go on record saying this is a tremendous signing -- for both sides, not just the Patriots. Edited March 5, 2007 by charty

This is the same type of dumb sheet GM's did in baseball years ago. Now the game and the player salaries are out of control. What is Clements salary going to do to the market NEXT season? Will Lito Sheppard demand a pay raise of $100 million over the next 8 years? It's a bit ridiculous.
