and where do you think the UN gets that data?

No idea. It is what it is.

Is that including the boat people that floated here on a cardboard box to escape Cuba, Ursa?

What has this got to do with anything?

Someone mentioned Cuban health care earlier so I thought I'd look up how life expectancy has changed in Cuba over 50 years versus the US. The stats you see are what I found. Spin it how you like.

I know ..sometimes it just makes you scratch your head a little bit harder than usual

Maybe back in high school, before the bulk of my youthful idealism and social outrage were largely trampled into oblivion by the realties of mortgage payments, taxes, and the omnipresent specter of what it will cost to put two kids through college at the same time.

The 2007 CIA World Factbook reveals that the average life expectancy for Cubans is 77.08 years. The book, an annual publication compiled by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, contains statistical information on countries worldwide.

i'll help you out. the cuban government gave it to them.

Surely you aren't suggesting that the CIA just took information from an untrustworthy source and then presented it to the world as fact without any corroborating evidence...

Because that would be absolutely irresponsible and ridiculous. You're far too smart to fall for THAT kind of BS.

Isn't that fact like when 100% of the people freely vote for Castro in the "Democratic" elections...failing to mention that the ballot reads like this:

Vote for President, comrade:

_____Fidel Castro

_____Death

_____Write-in (and it'd better start with "F" and end with "o" with the middle being idel Castr or we kill you)

Do you have a point. You trust our government....you know....the same one who has sealed the Kennedy file till after I die. I agree with you that the Cuban government is not to be trusted....but then how do you square that with your utter trust of our current group of crooks and liars?

i do trust that our government (census bureau or whatever) doesn't really have much reason or incentive to lie about life expectancy in the united states. it is a far more political thing in cuba. so yes, in this instance i do differentiate between the propaganda of a backwards socialist dictatorship and the internal statistics issued by our own government's bureaucracy. obviously it is all the same to you. somehow life expectancy magically went way up under castro's dictatorial regime, to the point where famous anti-american american propagandists make movies about how great cuba is. has their been similar fluctuation in the US statistics as one party takes power from the other?

Same as every other government gave the same data. Are we to assume that all such data are worthless? Better yet, are you able to provide data that prove otherwise?

Irregardless of where the info comes from, there is a very good explanation for the reason why the life expectancy has increased in Cuba at a higher rate than here in the US. In 1960 the US was far ahead of Cuba technologically. We had a very strong medical infrastructure, more modern medicine, better food production, better law enforcement, better housing, etc... Compared to us, Cuba was in the 1860's. Once they went Communist in 1960 and received technology and monetary support from the Communist Bloc Countries they experienced a very steep learning curve.

Another example of this is post WWII Japan. Not a communist country with a relatively primitive economy in the 1930's and 40's and now, after the infusion of American money and technology they have become one of the premiere economies of the world. Life expectancy has increased and hell, the standard of living is MUCH higher than in Cuba. That and you don't have to worry about being imprisoned for talking too loudly about the government.

Now, one thing we need to consider is how much will global warming impact the life expectancy of the average Cuban, what with the increase of violent hurricanes and the rising sea levels...

in 1940 life expectancy in Japan was 50 years by 1965 it was 73 years. Not sure if this was just for women, but still a pretty dramatic increase that blows Cuba's out of the water.

No, it is not all the same to me. I don't trust either of them.

Wasnt the piece in Sicko about the treatment given to detainees in Guantanamo by our millitary rather than the Cuban populaces actuall healthcare providers? I havent seen the movie but that was my understanding.
