dmarc117
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080522/ap_on_...tity_fraud_flap Now, Lifelock customers in Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia are suing Davis, claiming his service didn't work as promised and he knew it wouldn't, because the service had failed even him. Attorney David Paris said he found records of other people applying for or receiving driver's licenses at least 20 times using Davis' Social Security number, though some of the applications may have been rejected because data in them didn't match what the Social Security Administration had on file. Davis acknowledged in an interview with The Associated Press that his stunt has led to at least 87 instances in which people have tried to steal his identity, and one succeeded: a guy in Texas who duped an online payday loan operation last year into giving him $500 using Davis' Social Security number. MrTed46
I read that article earlier... the way I see it is nothing will protect you 100% we all know that. and this dude has his SS # available to EVERY scammer in the world and he only got dinged up $500 ONCE? to me that says this service somewhat works. I still use it. I dont have the state but I am sure most of identity theft fraud is credit and MOST credit agencies will go through the three biggies. MrTed46
Not only his his SSN available to every scammer in the world ... he CHALLENGED them Exactly and he only got hit once for a small amount. I'd say thats a success in my book. AND that creditor did not go through the three big agencies to confirm his standing.
peepinmofo
I read this too, and it dawned on me... Ive never looked at my credit report. Does it hurt your credit to look at your credit report (using Equifax?) I was curious about that... Anyone else use them?

MrTed46
i heard your credit rating gets a small ding with every credit report.......can anyone confirm I believe you can check it once a year in each agency without getting a small ding on it. But otherwise, it is a very small ding and as long as it isnt often should not impact your score. This is my understanding but I am sure others will confirm. budlitebrad
I checked mine out online and it hasn't gone down at all. My brother was ready to punch me in the face when I told him my score.

Double Agent
I think when you check your own credit it's a passive inquiry and it doesn't affect your score. As opposed to applying for a credit card which is a hard pull. I guess there's a difference between using your report to apply for credit and just checking it. And Polk, I'm a big Dave fan but he's dead wrong on credit reports. It pays to have excellent credit...and not just when you're trying to get a loan. Would you advise me to accumulate debt to raise my credit score? I pay my bills on time, other than accumulating more debt I do not know how to go about it. alchico
I think he has a pretty good leg to stand on How did it fail him? they stole his identity but he was covered by their insurance policy. Edited May 23, 2008 by alchico
TheShiznit
Would you advise me to accumulate debt to raise my credit score? I pay my bills on time, other than accumulating more debt I do not know how to go about it. Do what I do....have a credit card all my montly bills...electric, gas, cable, and so on and so forth....they all get charged to this card which earns me reward points. Pay it off every month...because I assume you pay your bills anyway. I pay it online....saves stamps...time....and I get free crap while keeping a high credit score. You have to be disciplined to do that....but that is one suggestion. For the record, I hate debit cards because the cash comes right out of my bank account. If someone steals my card, they get my cash until I win my appeal. If someone steals my Chase card, they get Chase's money....I really could give a rip....as long as I win my appeal. Either way....JMHO.

ABearWithFurniture
So to prosper in our economic system I should have to use a credit card. Anton, do you have any idea how crazy that is??????????? Amazing isn't it...I sold my house in California and made a small fortune off of it. Moved to Texas and bought twice the size house and lot for half the money. Paid off all my loans and debt and threw away all my credit cards. And my credit score took a dive because I no longer have any revolving credit card accounts
