According to this article the moratorium on new deep water drilling projects was yet another Obama lie. The administration gave the go-ahead to drill in waters almost TWICE as deep as the spot of the current disaster.

For those few souls out there still hanging onto the Obama myth, dudes, it is time to let it go. Lets get real, we are dealing with a sociopathic socialist.

I remember voting for him because he was less like Bush than McCain and Ron Paul was simply an unrealistic candidate at becoming President...

it took less than 4 months for me to realize that we were in a lose-lose situation in 2008 when it was time for the Presidential election

I don't see any reason we should stop drilling. :omg: I think we just need to have better standards that ARE enforced and respected. We have been lucky thus far over the years. Now the real sludge has emerged from this disastor. The HNIC's that let this happen. It will require major clean-up in Big Oil and how they conduct drilling, Minerals Mangement Service what a flamboyant joke, and overall Emergency response to spills.

There is oil 12 miles deep in my homeland marsh, and it FOKIN SUCKS. If anyone would be against drilling it should be me, my state and others were screwed by this. We get to listen to some fat cat CEO tell us every square inch is going to be cleaned up, great...yea...just like you've capped yer well.

Not recent but hits my points...

I don't know, it's like living in the twilight zone. We have possibly a monumental catastrophe with a well at 5,000 ft, and now we are going full bore at 9,000 feet. Doesn't anybody think we need to put the brakes on until we are sure we can do this right? Does anybody think they are ready to do it right when they have no clue how to stop the disaster they already have? I understand that we can't shut down the oil industry, but to keep pushing the bounderies of our limitations with basically the same system in place and no contingency plans (as cleary evidenced with Deepwater)? Wow. Just wow.

This commentator is right, if this had been Bush he would have been getting crucified right now.

You should see how many wells are drilling currently in the gulf, farther out and deeper. This was just one of many active wells. Map of wells

Check this out...

"Working with BP, the Transocean crews on the Deepwater Horizon drilled the well to 35,050 vertical depth and 35,055 feet measured depth (MD), or more than six miles, while operating in 4,130 feet of water."

"Transocean also holds the current world water-depth record of operating in 10,011 feet of water set while working for Chevron in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

The Deepwater Horizon, placed into service in 2001, is a dynamically positioned ultra-deepwater semisubmersible rig capable of working in water depths of up to 10,000 feet. "

Republicans are f'n amazing. They chant drill baby drill and now they are outraged that Obama gave some environmental waivers to, you know ... drill offshore just like they were screaming for.

Palin goes on TV and criticizes the feds and Obama for not pushing BP out of the way and federalizing the response. I swear I thought her head might explode arguing that we need a big government solution to a privately created problem.

Up is down, right is wrong, cats and dogs living together.

Jeebus if it gives them a chance to cry the GOP dilweeds become a bunch of loudmouth socialist nutjobs whining about how they want the Feds taking over private business to save us all ...

Truth is Obama has always been fairly centrist. He never promised no drilling. He never said no environmental waivers anywhere. Nor is Obama responsible for BP's failure to plug their leak. Its not like the Feds have a team of drilling engineers with magic well sealant that they are keeping in the closet until they really need it ...

 I'm a republican...I'm not asking Fed's to take over anything. There needs to be some sort of "enforcing" agency that makes sure that specs are being maintained...the one we had was likely enjoying lap dances on Bourbon St on Shell's ticket during the explosion. I might be missing yer point.

I'm not following you either... it should have been Bush's job to go down and inspect the levies himself during Katrina?

Obama should have inspected the wells personally?

Neither was directly their fault and neither have responded quickly to the crises. One got bombarded with blame, the other has not.

Maybe I don't know enough about the situation to opine, but....exactly what is Obama supposed to do here? He is tasking the oil company that is responsible for the disaster to fix the problem, and clean it up. What more can be done here? Or are we really to beleive that the government knows how to fix it, yet are doing nothing?

Conversely, the Katrina disaster involved the loss of thousands of lives, and required calculated quick actions to mitigate the losses...none of which happened.

Sorry, but these disasters are apples-to-oranges.

And I do think we need to keep harvesting our natural resources. I don't think we should stop flying when a plane crashes, I don't think we evacuate all coastal cities because one hurricane devastates an area, I don't think we should stop transporting oil when an Exxon Valdez spills its cargo...and I don't think we stop mining for oil when one drilling station has an accident.

This is not about politics, and people keep trying to turn it into politics. It is about right and wrong. But if you want to turn it into politics, maybe if Obama wasn't so busy trying to rush his agenda through and make sure we are well on the road to socialism before his free ride gets blown up this November, maybe he would have grasped the scope of this disaster and NOT waited until 5 weeks after the fact to realize that BP didn't have a clue what to do.

Nobody is blaming Obama for this disaster. But his continuation of laxed policies borne of the Bush administration in my mind makes him at least somewhat culpable in this situation. And his lack of action (other than telling BP - hey, you guys need to fix this and "expressing frustration") hardly speaks to his leadership. The media and the cattle...er citizens of this country continue to give him a free ride. But all I am seeing is misguided policies. half truths, and outright lies.

I had no problem with the media hounding given to our previous administration, they deserved every bit of it. But where is the outrage for this presidents atrocities?

So, we are willing to accept the fact that business will go on as usual. We have not changed any regulations to solve the problem. We have added no new safeguards to make sure the drillers take no shortcuts. We are all ok with it it this situation repeats itself. And if it does, we can all survive without the Ocean and all of it's life.

I'm not against the oil industry, but it seems to me that we need to make absolutely certain this doesn't repeat itself, and I see no actions pointed toward that goal. Business as usual.

I think we should drill baby drill. I don't think that Obama deserves any real criticism here. I don't think the federal government needs to do much if any more than it is already doing. The oil companies are the ones that are actually trained to deal with these types of things, not the coast guard or the navy. This is a regrettable accident, but really shouldn't do much to change policy. Sometimes chit happens. We had a tractor trailer pulling an tank of gas get hit in the middle of an intersection, spilling the contents of the tank. Should we make it to where gas rigs can't make left turns anymore because of this freak accident? At this point we still really don't know what happened. We here politicians from both side pontificating, but nobody really knows at this point. Until we can root out the actual cause of this disaster then anything we do or call for beside trying to clean up the mess is nothing more than knee jerk reactions. Unfortunately both sides are trying to gain points based on this, which is just sad.

well they have a lot of reasons to be for it as well. how many thousands of jobs are we talking about? without that industry, southern lousiana would be in pretty bad shape economically.

BP Ignored Warning Signs That Could Have Prevented Gulf Oil Leak

Todd M. Schoenberger, Managing Editor, Taipan's Tipping Point Alert

Thursday, May 13, 2010

.Americans getting their day started this morning were hit with images of an out-of-control pipe gushing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Scenes filmed by British Petroleum (BP), the oil giant at the center of oil leak crisis, have been blasted to every news organization on the planet.

It is now being discovered that managers aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig ignored warning signs and decided to push forward to continue the project, which most likely was the catalyst for the massive explosion that killed 11 people and will certainly disrupt the economic viability of the Gulf Coast region.

According to Congressional testimony and documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, highly combustible gas seeped into the well and it, most likely, was the cause of the explosion. Workers on the Deepwater Horizon rig could have halted production to fix the problem and prevented the horrific events of the last few weeks.

And now we have reports of tar balls washing up on Alabama's Dauphin Island. Tests are taking place to determine if the black gobs are crude oil, but all reports so far from experts on the ground are concluding that it is. In what was more of a threat to Louisiana and Mississippi, is now spreading east and could end up hitting the coasts of Florida.

The hits just keep on coming for BP and its engineers, as well. Evidently, after intense pressure from the media, the company has decided to shelve the plan of sticking golf balls in the damaged pipe and try, one more time, to lower a containment box over the area. Don't be surprised, however, if the golf ball plan reenters the BP's strategy if this effort fails, as many talking pundits on television are saying it will.

The one ancillary concern for Americans is the amount of chemicals that are used to supposedly break up the crude oil. Sea life will, no doubt, be affected by these chemicals – and these chemicals could seriously harm the seafood industry for the Gulf region. So, what's BP going to do then?

When BP American Chairman Lamar McKay was asked if the company will reimburse those affected in the fishing and shrimping industries, he conveniently sidestepped the question and diverted into another topic. There's no question though that an army of lawyers are setting up camp in the area and will be ready to proceed if BP doesn't reciprocate in some fashion.

Sadly, a simple stop and reexamination of the pipe could have prevented this and helped the oil industry proceed with offshore drilling initiatives. Now, a reactive-crazy Congress is getting ready to crush a sector that can ill afford a hiccup in its business model.

BP screwed up. It is asinine to compare this tyo Katrina, which was a natural disaster of epic proportions.

Drilling that deep can be done safely . . if the companies decide to actually put in the correct safeguards and not cut corners . . .

No doubt Az, we'd be up cheet's creek without a stick. We absolutely depend on the industry, more so Oil than Seafood I'd suspect. Personally, my father is an oil scout/landman for Marlin Energy based out of Lafayette, LA. and my brother is an offshore gas production operator.

I met a mom of one of the 11 the other day, she was buying a teeball glove for her grandson. That was a sad moment...

Didn't BP have only 5 people on that rig? Weren't Transocean and Haliburton basically running the show with the drilling that was occurring? Just want to get my facts straight...

Didnt BP own the rig and hire them as independent contractors? I would think that they still assume risk by hiring comapnies that did a chitty job . . .

Also, isnt there an "Acoustic trigger" that COULD have been installed and stopped the leak immediately, but they decided to NOT do it becasue they didnt want to spend the money?
