Placing the Blame as Students Are Buried in Debt

Another point being missed here is that the reason we pay $150/hour for a plumber, $70+/hr for a mechanic, etc. The trades are FAR more profitable in this day and age than most white-collar professions that originate in a university.

And the ultimate reason to be in the trades versus the white collar professions.......outsourcing. Ever tried outsourcing plumbing work to India?

A guy I used to work with went to Duke, so his daughter wanted to go to Duke. So he sent her to duke, for an Education degree.... He used to complain all the time that he was paying 70K a year for his daughter to go to college, which is more than she would make after teaching for 10 years here in GA.

I think people need to consider what degree they are going for before spending the money on one of these expensive schools. If my Daughter wants to be a teacher, it is either Kennesaw State, GA State, or GA Southern. If she wants to be an engineer, I'll pony up for GT, MIT, or whatever. But for a ed or liberal arts degree, there isn't any sense in sending someone to one of these expensive universities.

This - I mean, what the frick kind of job did she expect to get with a degree in religious and women's studies?

And why do degrees like this even exist???

So when she gets married to some rich NY stock broker she can tell people at parties that she went to NYU and majored in women's studies and then opine about how the man is keeping her down with glass ceilings, archaic images of women and testicles, while she is wearing a $7,500 cocktail dress, $200,000 worht of jewelry and $3,000 shoes that her opressive mate bought for her. Then they can all ooo and ahhh and talk about their vaginas because they are liberated.

I didn;t see pics of her.. this scenario only works out if she is hot and can be a trophy wife.

They exist because academia won't deign to bow to crass commercialism in deciding the course catalog.

Individual courses I can understand. A full academic degree that when you major in it has no relevant job that can pay for said degree seems purely self-serving for the academic instution that offers it.

And Muck is right as well - schools don't teach kids to think rationally, which is the sorest problem of all.

some schools.... just depends on were you are in the country. the farther south and west you go the more restrictions on what can be taught and discussed there will be .The kids are not allowed to reason, research, organize and process different thoughts and ideas. This leads to people that cant reason or trouble shoot when given information or situations they don't know.

ACEO ... you well know that every school everwhere ... public, private, parochial or home ... has biases and blindspots. The only difference is what they are and why they exist. While beautiful, Colorado is not the utopia of all-encompassing thought, knowledge or experience. But, yes, some schools are far less limited in their pursuits of intellectual exercise than others.

Really guys? I find this thread pretty funny (especially with some of you politicos). You expect school to teach your kids how to spend money and make good decisions about finances?

[TimC] I know you big government comrades like uncle Sam in control of all your chit. [/TimC]

It's the parent's fault. Kids are going to make stupid decisions. All humans do it and immature children do it more often. If you do not teach your children how to save, spend, and give money away to charity don't hold your breath waiting for some class with a teacher making 30K a year holding student loans of 70K to make your little ones wise with their dollars. For all the (mostly) worthless rambling about government control of our lives, the gnashing of teeth and overall b!tching some of you do, this is the single largest thing you can do to combat "the man". People with money have options. People living paycheck to paycheck are stuck in the system and a drain on the economy as soon as everything isn't going perfect. They are the ones writing their senator about how they can't live anymore because gas costs them an extra $150 a month. Getting rid of debt and having money to take care of reasonable problems makes society and our economy more stable. Money talks in this country and the government has a greater ability to push you around if you are in debt and living paycheck to paycheck. Basically the best way to keep yourself and your children from being sheep is to teach them (by example) how to live on less than you make, to get excited about saving money, and to make good economic decisions to set yourself up for future success. It'd be nice if school had something but there is no way I'd be hands off even if they had extensive classes on the subject.

No need to outsource to India when you can just hire a Messican to do the work. Maybe it hasnt hit plumbing as hard yet, but drive around today and tell me who you see out cutting grass/landscaping, roofing, siding, etc

Because (despite popular opinion) a college/university's mission is to educate its students in what they choose to learn about?
