Ramhock
Right shoulder was "off" for a coupla years, a few years ago. Had an MRI, went to a specialist & he twisted my shoulder all around & the next day it was fine, never to return. Before I had it looked at, couldn't throw a football more than 10 yards. Now can throw it 40, again. Coupla months ago, felt like the same thing in my left shoulder. This time my doc doesn't send me for MRI & specialist. Says it's bursitis, like he can see through my shoulder. Gives me a cortisone shot. I ask him what I can expect. He says within an hour you will be pain free. It will last about a week. If the pain comes back, we will send you for an MRI, at that time. It's been 24 hours, not any better than it was. What's up with this cortisone stuff? Tford
Anti-inflammatory. Less swelling = less pain. You need to give it more than a day to start working.

keggerz
had a cortisone shot in my knee about 15-20 yrs ago and it sucked, realllllllly bad...pain from the shot exceeded the pain in my knee or at least so my mind thought seeing that big azz needle enter my knee.... going for my 2nd epidural shot in less than 3 months...at least I will be knocked out for that but I don't think I got much benefit from the first shot at all
Footballjoe
Shoveled sand under my house for 3 days about 7 years ago. I literally could not move my shoulder and the pain was just bearable even with meds. Had a shot in the shoulder and with in a few days I was like a new man. Shoulder has been fine ever since except for a little soreness now and then, just enough to remind me that I am mortal.
Rovers
I had at least 3 shots in my right shoulder before finally having reconstructive surgery, which btw, worked out very well. When I got my shots, they also had a local anesthetic, so pain relief was immediate. I have to say, my cortisone shots worked within minutes for pain releif and pain did not return for at least a couple of months.
BeeR
Had a few for bad cases of poison ivy (I'm highly susceptible) - GB that and prednizone.
Chargerz
Cortisone reduces inflammation. Your doc is hoping that by reducing inflammation your shoulder will have enough time to heal. If it doesn't help, then you will need the MRI and a possible scope.
Ramhock
Thanx all. Only slight relief, so far, no improved range (w/o consequences).
BillyBalata
I've had several cortisone shots, 2 in my back. First time helped quite a bit but only lasted a month or so. 2nd time didn't help at all and had surgery a month later. Had one in my left knee 12 years ago that I didn't feel helped at all. But the knee did feel better over time but that was 6 months later. Knee got pretty bad again couple years ago. Had one two winters ago that worked great. Like has been mentioned took about a week to really start to feel good. For about 3-4 months it felt really good but then it went back to hurting again. Got another one 6 months after the first, didn't seem to help at all that time. Ended up getting the knee replaced last fall. Feeling much better now. Czarina
My husband has had on and off again shoulder issues for years. They never did MRIs but at various times called it a torn labrum and bursitis. He had a cortisone shot in the shoulder in December and it didn't give much relief for any length of time. In January, he was literally reaching back to put his arm onto the back of the seat next to him and felt a POP and tons of pain. MRI this time showed a torn rotator cuff. It required surgery and he's rehabbing it now. Oddly enough, when I mentioned to my chiropractor that Chris was having shoulder troubles again that needed surgery, he asked if he'd gotten a cortisone shot. He said that in his opinion, cortisone shots weaken the shoulder.
Ramhock
Luckily, no surgery required. I have a frozen shoulder. They will put me under, numb it, move it all around then right to therapy for a few hours to keep it moving. Then, therapy a few times/week for a few weeks. Got relatively lucky, this time. Why do we take it for granted, when all the parts are working? I need to stop doing that.
Delicious_bass
Jammed my big toe this winter icefishing and cracked some cartilage in there. Yeah, dont ask. Anyway, Doc gave me a shot right in the biggest knuckle where my toe meets my foot. It got even more sore (than it was before the shot) that night but then it subsided and felt good starting the next day or so. They gave me a local before the actual shot so it wasnt bad at all as far as that goes...
Scooby's Hubby
anti-inflamatory may not be what you need, actually. but it was a good place to start. you probably have a rotator cuff issue and only rest will heal that, and alot of rest. even steroids will not help. Skippy
I have always been hit or miss with the coritsone shots. Seems to me like when they work they work great. When they don't work, they don't work at all. Every single place that I had a coritsone shot did end up in surgery though.
