Ursa Majoris
Mary Molitor, 72, a retired mental-health aide from Lodi, Wis., went to two Tea Party-sponsored rallies at the state Capitol in Madison around Tax Day in April to protest what she sees as a federal government that has overstepped its bounds. "The government is taking over everything — the banks, the automobiles," she says. "I want my freedom back." Well Mary, maybe you could opt out of Medicare and SS in protest? Ursa Majoris
ah, Death Panel, Death Panel, aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Presumably the government overstepped it's bounds with the Health Care Act. I doubt it overstepped when making sure Mary would get free health care the rest of her life nor when it made sure she wouldn't be broke. Funny how one person's well earned benefit is another person's boondoggle.
bpwallace49
It is always the case when facing austerity measures . . . people want "cuts", but just not to things that THEY benefit from. There is a lot that the Tea Party can legitimately lay claims to for cuts, but it sure will be tough to have a one-plank party come election time . . they will have to make common cause with the GOP across the board to get their message implemented. gbpfan1231
Anyone here agree that govt benefits should be used in casinos? Anyone? Bueller? Thought not. Agree - all I was doing was giving an example of a benefit that is deserved by some people are abused by others - in my opinion a good example of what you were saying. No, my point was that many of the Tea Party are big-time beneficiaries of government programs but the catalyst for them to become Tea Partiers was another government program. A case of "I've got mine, f*** you".
TimC
The problem is only intelligent people truly understand the Conservative ideas. And intelligent people in the United States today are few and far between. It's easier to promise free candy and sparkles to everyone with no idea how to ever pay for it. The people generally eat that up. And then get sick off it, but the free healthcare will magically pay for it...because, you know, it's free. bushwacked
The Tea Party is a group that has gotten continual less popular with mainstream Americans for doing wacky stuff like getting the Idaho GOP to change their platform to using a gold and silver monetary standard instead of the US dollar, denying gay marriage, and taking state lands back from the federal government. A growing state of mind indeed. Edited July 2, 2010 by bushwacked

Perchoutofwater
Well Mary, maybe you could opt out of Medicare and SS in protest? I'll opt out of both, and continue to pay for the people older than me, if you promise to do away with both programs for anyone under 50 right now. I think that 99% of the population would be tea-party members if this was indicative of the type of problems they were/are trying to fix. Ursa Majoris
like you sent back the tax cuts bush gave you, right? Nice non-sequitur. I think we're talking about government programs. Just what would all these people who think the gubment is evil say if programs that benefit them were withdrawn as part of the cuts they all claim to want? Bottom line - the Tea Party is chock full of hypocrites.

Ursa Majoris
can i opt out paying into these ponzi schemes? No. But with any luck you will be able to opt out of collecting on them, just as with any luck you won't need to collect on your house insurance. Your payments would be able to drop to a very low level too if the thing was run as it should be.
