Skippy
People sure did go for those loans though. My sister in law would take it even though she didn't need the money but just wanted to go spend big on something.

My sister in law would take it even though she didn't need the money but just wanted to go spend big on something. And she still can - all she needs to do is withhold taxes more efficiently during the year and stash the savings. Between the short term interest she'll earn during the year, and interest that WON'T be paid to H&R Block, she be able to buy something even bigger. I'd be happy to help your sister put this plan into action... if she's hot.

redrumjuice
Why is it any of your business if someone wants to do a rapid refund loan? Â If you were starving, would you pay $10 for a hamburger, or have nothing so you don't have to pay too much?

Perchoutofwater
I have to agree with this. If someone wants to use that service and pay the fee to do it then go for it. Â Because we have to keep the stupid people from doing stupid things. It used to be survival of the fittest, and our nation thrived, and became the greatest nation the world has ever known, but now it is make sure that everyone survives and we are mired in mediocrity. SayItAintSoJoe
I have to agree with this. If someone wants to use that service and pay the fee to do it then go for it. Â Some people with low incomes and a few kids to claim can qualify for some crazy high tax returns based on the Earned Income Tax Credit. Its a refundable tax credit which means that they often end up getting back even more then they paid in taxes. It basically amounts to free money. What do they care if a hefty fee is taken out? If they are low income then they should care. I am just saying that if you want to spend the fee then go for it. What amount of a fee is OK? Like in the other thread - will it be illegal for movie theaters to charge so much for popcorn??? If someone wants to pay a ridiculous fee and they actually do get something for that fee then it is the choice of the person choosing to pay the fee. Why the hell should we pay more in taxes just so these impatient momos can turn around and give some of it to H&R block? Â Oh I'm not saying it's right I'm just telling you like it is. I used to share an office with an accountant and I used to see these big refund checks flying out of there all day long. To the accountant's credit he used to even try to talk people out of opting for the rapid refund even though he made more money when they opted for it. He knew it was a bad deal for them. Yet still, time and time again, they wanted the rapid refund. To them it was like free money. The rest of us know that there's no such thing. Â As your dear leader said, "we need to spread the wealth around a little". Â That is your mantra. Also, don't forget, "there comes a time when you've made enough money". Your leader. I'd rather see government run soup kitchens and government subsidized health care for the truly destitute than give them free money to waste. That is part of the problem with the tax system the way that it is. Nobody I don't care who they are should receive a larger refund or credit than they actually pay in. FWmaker
While my office offered the RALs, only a handful of clients couldn't be talked out of using them. We highly discouraged the program. Â I never offered my private clients the RALs. Â BUT - word of mouth was the biggest issue. People, almost exclusively low-income people, saw their friends getting the cash early and started a wild-fire of sorts within their circle. Â Look, the rapid refunds bilk the poor and the ignorant. Preventing some idiot form hurting himself isn't such a bad thing. The "money now" impulsiveness of the consumer public is one of the many reasons that the economy is floundering in sucksville these days. A lot of people made dumb decisions to facilitate their overspending, and that's all come home to roost. The rapid refunds are endemic of that mentality.
