I wouldn't think that the change of oil would make the light come on but I don't really know for sure. However, I'd check to see if there are reset controls that need to be adjusted after getting an oil change. Also I'd check to see if there's an oil leak- possible double gasket? Maybe they didn't put enough oil back in the car after draining it?

So I'd check the oil, check for maintenance reset controls and see if there's any leaking.

What kind of vehicle? Is it the "change oil light" or the red oil light?

MF'n VW Touareg... It is a little symbol that looks like an oil can. There is oil in the car, or so she says. She also said that the oil pressure gauge isn't moving up while the car is on (for the life of me I can't remember whether it is an oli pressure gauge or an oil temp gauge on that car.)

That's the low oil light. Either they didn't put enough oil in it or it's leaking. If she doesn't see anything on the ground, then I'd assume it's low on oil. I think she should call/take vehicle back to where she had the oil change done & have them recheck everything. Plus, I'd make them put the right oil in the vehicle. I'm pretty sure it calls for a full synthetic oil...probably 5W-40. Depending on the engine size, it could take anywhere from 6.7 to 8.8 qts. My guess is that they didn't put enough oil in it.

Thank you, I'm guessing it probably is. I had her look at the receipt for the oil change. "Up to 5 qts" and no extra charge for the other +/- 2 qts... Why the Fu(k would any place do the 5 qt oil change for a car that requires more?!?!?!?

An aside:

Perhaps having your automobile maintenance perfromed whilst you are out of town is a bad idea?

Meh, it's just an oil change. I'd probably assume that the guy who went to oil change university (for 2 days) would be able to handle it.

Well, when the wife sees that the thingy on the window has a lower number than the thingy on the dash board she freaks out and has to immediately have the oil changed. She could be driving a load of heroin across the border and if the mileages didn't match up she would have to pull over and have it done.

Wife is out of town, had an oil change. They put regular 5w30 in the car instead of synthetic, now oil light is on... What does she need to do?

She needs to make me a sammich

Well, that's probably better than her never having the oil changed.

I think that the chances of something going wrong are pretty remote, but there isn't any drawback to waiting to have it done locally.

Why wouldn't you take your car to the same place every time?

Why wouldn't you go somewhere that you could easily easily have a face to face meeting with someone if necessary?

Why wouldn't you try to build a rapport with the owner/manager of a local place?

Why not give your money to a local business?

We usually do take it to the same place, Kauffman Tire. They do an excellent job. Got a new set of Dunlops about 6 months ago, $735 for the set. They really do have better people and better prices at Kauffman Tire and currently are running some pretty good specials. If I were you guys and you have one near you, I'd stop in and check them out!!

That may be the problem with the oil. You took it to a tire store.
