if I truly considered somebody to be the greatest singer since sliced bread or whatever, I would probably own a couple of their records. just sayin. so I question whether all the people talking about uniquely great she was really mean it deep down.

Why? I watch American Idol some times and critique the singers, some of whom are amazing, but I'd never go out and buy their records...

Perhaps your confusing taste with an ability to respect something you're not really into...

I don't think it is inconsistent to appreciate talent but not care for the genre.

Just watched The Bodyguard against my will. She had crazy talent. She was even a decent actress. Why people ruin their bodies is beyond me. It's tough enough to stay healthy when you don't abuse food, alcohol, or drugs.

This.....

Noone is going to come to an agreement on this because someones taste never matches everyone elses so..... I think her voice alone is up there with the all time greats regardless of genre!

I believe we should be banking the DNA of the hot and the talented so that come the day we can gorw us some Whitney's or Racquel's or Tawney's or whoevers. Somebody get on this.

Myself, I could go for a young Ann Margaret, Nia Peeples, Tia Carerre, Erica Eleniack harem to call my own. If I had enogh money I might want to add a Barbara Bach and a Bridget Bardot to the collection.
