That Indy "fake punt..."

I didn't see the play as it happened and just saw it for the first time with Big John's link above. But I did suspect what happened in that play.

I remember one time the Miami Dolphins had a very similar offensive snap way back when Shula was still coaching. The defense was totally confused and didn't know how to line up against it. It looked like a genius thing to do back then, but also seemed so simple to defend it. Obviously.

So - has anyone seen an explanation as to what they were trying to do there? Were they trying to get the Pats to use a time out?

Was there truly a 2 on 5 trick play they had?

Had the special team coach been sniffing glue and poppin pills when he drew it up, but Pagano said "let's throw trick play number 4 at them"???? It really makes zero sense and that coach needs to be accountable.

They were trying to entice NE into making a mistake ... to jump off side or have 12 men on the field. As it turns out it wouldn't have mattered since they lined up illegally anyway.

It's basically a swinging gate play. If the defense doesn't react to the heavy side of the formation near the sideline, they snap the ball and throw it out there (I have only seen this from shotgun, I am baffled by him being under center). If the defense only leaves one man over the Griff Whalencenter, they snap the ball to Colt QB Anderson and run. If the defense responds correctly, you try to draw them offsides. Worst case scenario, your 5th WR gets startled and snaps the ball to your 5th safety with 3 defenders right on top of him. But that would never happen. Smoochieing ridiculous!

from IndyStar.com

After the Indianapolis Colts sent out a Twitter offer early Monday asking fans to tweet in questions for the coach to answer on his "Colts Monday Night" radio show, the questions poured in. They were mean and nasty. They came from depressed fans. They came from outraged fans:

"Coach, can you tell us what child won the 'you get to call a play' contest on that fake punt?"

"Do you consider the fake punt a success because no one died (that we know of)?"

"did you intentionally run the worst play in history or was that by accident?"

A few things I read today

- the "QB" in the formation told the "center" DON'T SNAP THE BALL

- the "center" in that formation is usually a different player, who got injured and didn't return so he was replaced

What is really baffling is that nobody on the field or the sideline could recognize how badly the play was going (not lined up properly, the 5 guys lined up over the ball ready to kill if you snap it) and did not call a time out, or just jump offsides for a false start (then punt it).

I'm sure BB was enjoying it, watching a coach try to do something cute like he would while playing him. Now watch next game he'll use that formation and do something completely different with it just to mess with people.

Back-to-back blowout losses. Gave up 96 points in two games. A team that has given up a Hail Mary TD, the ridiculous play that spawned this thread, and then today. Up 13-3, and after having forced a turnover, the Colts had a first down on the Jaguars 34 yard line. Sack, Strip, Fumble, Recovery, and a 66 yard TD.

This team is just awful. Grigson has had control for 4 years and we have a shit offensive line, a 40 year old QB, a 32 year old RB, and no pass rush. He traded away a first round draft pick for Trent Richardson and drafted Bjorn Werner. Can somebody fire this clown already?

And Pagano? He went from being a slightly above average coach to a complete moran this year. Has yet to win a challenge. And his reputation as a defensive coach is not translating to the Colts defense.

Terrible team, and it is time for a house cleaning for the second time in 4 years.
