jjpro11
this pretty off-topic from the whole football vs soccer thing.. but to be quite honest.. the purest sport out there is fighting.. whether its boxing, kickboxing, wrestling or mixed martial arts (ufc, pride, etc). those can be adapted to both real life and sport. size doesnt matter in either because most martial arts is taught so that you can use your opponent's size against him.. the smaller guys rely on speed and agility.. superior technique always wins vs brute strength.. not to mention weight classes, and even in some mma events open weight. no matter what, your always going to need a ball to play soccer or football.. but in fighting, its all about your ability.. no equipment needed.. unless of course if its an organized event where you would need gloves.. im a huge fight fan, so thats just my take.. but i love it when i see some of these idiot macho guys walking around with their tight shirts thinking they are unstoppable because they can bench or squat a lot and have big muscles.. then when they actually get into a confrontation with a trained fighter half their size, mr macho is left begging for mercy. godtomsatan
There are billions of people who follow soccer in the world, there are millions who follw the NFL. Case closed. How you are comparing the two befuddles me See your comment about "All is relative". And also, the initial poster made the comparison. Billions follow soccer, fantastic, yay. What's your point? I wasn't denegrating the sport. I was poopooing the notion that kryptonite laid out which seemed to imply the rest of the world mocks the US "obsession" with the NFL. I'll be awake at 6am on Friday. I told the Costa Rican's who work at the Mexican joint across the street that I'd root for their team.
godtomsatan
MONEY is the reason....soccer games have a running clock, thus no time outs for commercials. Commercials running underneath the score/clock. Commercials running across the bottom of the screen. Commercials on the sideline banners. Commercials on the uniforms. Soccer is the most commercial sport on the planet. I am quite thankful that the rest of the professional sports in this country limit that kind of stuff.

As if I don't have to watch all that stuff when I watch 'American' sports on TV. The best thing about soccer on TV is that there are no commerical 'breaks'. Unlike the rest of the sports world.... pro or not. Whether one likes it or not... commercialism is here to stay and it is becoming more in your face every year as advertisers find more ways to advertise and the respective sports get greedier and greedier. I'll be more clear: I was referring specifically to the advertisements on the uniforms and the sponsorships of the league itself. Kind of like NASCAR. Raider.Nation
I think we can ALL agree on this. Each sports siginificant events (ie Superbowl, Stanley Cup, World Cup, etc) has it's place in our society('s). What would the sports world be in America without the Superbowl or the World Series. And up here, we live and breath hockey and the Stanley Cup playoffs. The World Cup is a chance for the world to celebrate international soccer... whitem0nkey
i read this in SI. they were comparing the NCAA to the world cup. think of the world cup as march madness - one that you can watch all 64 games live, one that lasts a week longer, takes almost no off days. think of brazil as UCLA the freewheeling naturals with championship trophies; of germany as kentucky, serious and stiff; and US as gonzaga, the midmajor seeking its final 4 breakthrough. McBoog
One problem that our Football faces in terms of "catching on" is that it requires a lot of equipment to play. Most of the other nations don't have the money to supply youth football programs. If you have priced the cost for just one uni, you are looking at well over a couple hundred bucks . Soccar requires a ball, and judging from my young relatives in Mexico when I'm there, any ball will do. A recent pick-up game I saw of aspiring 7,8,9 Oh, and my own 4 year old was put together in my 20 by 50 yard, goals were a couple of rocks at each end and the ball was my boy's "Spider Man" ball I paid $1.50 for out of the bucket at the supermarket (his ball, he got to play ). They played for a couple of hours. Even just a touch game of football requires, a football. Yeh, there are cheapo balls WE can buy now, but they are not sold around the world. Also, touch, flag or any other form of football other than the real thing is just NOT the real thing ! Given the above scenario, the kids were playing "real" soccar, and it only cast $1.50! Our football rules as an ultimate team sport. Strategies and plans constantly evolve and the game changes in ways that require constant coaching evolution. Soccar is a game that has reached its maximum potential. There are "systems" that are used, all with their own subtleties, but there has been little "new" introduced for many decades. The real secret is to implement a system that matches the type of players you have and a coach that can implement and teach it as well as inspire to win. Soccar coaches are much more about personality than actual coaching ability than that of their American Football counterparts. The accesability of the game, it its actual form is what gives it the world-wide appeal that our beloved sport will probably never be able to match. I think I like it like that! jgcoach
Let's also not forget, football (American) is in it's infancy compared to Soccer. In some form, Soccer has been around for 2,617 yrs. and was actually started in Japan. When American football celebrates it's 2,617th. birthday we can see how big it becomes then or if it's still around. I'm a very narrow minded person, screw the rest of the world I'll keep American Football here and really don't care if it catches on anywhere else. As far as Soccer, never got into the game and probably never will.
