Savage Beatings
That's pretty impressive, and the guy is definitely a hero for being able to defend himself and the rest of his group... but I'm willing to guess that even as a means of self-defense, killing someone like that is something that would haunt you. Don't get me wrong, I think he absolutely did the right thing. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't consider it a horrible and traumatic incident rather than soemthing to be heralded. He's 70, so he was born in 1937. That rules out WW2 and Korea. If he's career, he probably served in Vietnam though, so he's unlikely to consider this traumatic vs. SE Asia. It doesn't say what branch he served with though.

The Holy Roller
Choking someone to unconsciousness or death is the first hand-to-hand combat training given to my younger version back in San Diego in '72. We had to practice several grips on a partner who would then choke the shiiit out of you in return. It was a fun day (NOT). I couldn't wait to get home and try it out on my high school buddies. I think the muggers picked on the wrong group of seniors that day.
sunysteelfly76
The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press any charges against them. "They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," he said. This is my favorite part of the story.

Different men are made of different stuff. I love to watch the WWII shows on the History Channel. Some of them get all choked up about the friends they lost and enemies they killed. Others get all fired up and seem like thay want another shot at that Jap or Kraut. My grandpa used to talk a lot about fighting the Japs in the Pacific, but my dad is real quiet about his experience in 'Nam.
