cliaz
I just thought it an interesting question because I went over to a client’s house yesterday to hook up his new router and he told me that when he is trying to work out an IT problem he has to think in English because Spanish doesn't have certain words for IT stuff. And of course in typical American fashion I said “You think in Spanish instead of English? Why?” Stuff you never think of I guess.
spain
I was never exposed to Spanish growing up. I moved to Texas for college and realized we had a whole bunch of Spanish speakers in our country. So, I learned to speak fluent Spanish. Ive never had a class in Spanish so my grammar is the grammar of the streets. Mostly Texican Slang. But I am very proficient in the language and can carry on conversations with no problem at all. I speak at least as good Spanish as your typical Latino that was born in the US. But Confederate Sates of America English is my 1st language...

The wife and I agreed that Spanish needs to be taught to the twins. The reality that English is the only language we need in the US is slowly going away. Hugh 0ne
I grew up bi-lingual. I spoke Swiss-German before I spoke English. I went to school from Kindergarten through High School in New Jersey. I spent 4 years in Switzerland attending college in German. I only think in English, and always have since starting school in English. Even when going to school in Switzerland in a different language, my thoughts have always been in English.

Footballjoe
If you think things through in both languages, wouldn't that be like getting a second opinion?
BiggieFries
Got a weird question for you. When you think to yourself or think through a problem what language do you think in? Depends on where I am and who I'm speaking to. If I'm w/ my family I speak Spanish and that's it. I don't translate it to English. If there's a word I can't remember I'll say the word in English without missing a beat and then go right back to Spanish. No translations from one language to another being done. I leaned Spanish first and then English when I was around 3-4. I learned by watching Sesame Street. I just thought it an interesting question because I went over to a client’s house yesterday to hook up his new router and he told me that when he is trying to work out an IT problem he has to think in English because Spanish doesn't have certain words for IT stuff. I do this as well, but only for IT terms.
Swampnuts
I apologize for hijacking Cliaz, but I've got to learn to speak Spanish. I hate that I need to do it, but it's becoming necessary. What's the best avenue for language learning nowadays? Traditional classes? Books or DVD's? Rosetta Stone? Any recommendations?

irish
lighten up francis i was joking. You gotta throw me my favorite graemlin out there, a wink, so I don't miss the sarcasm. I'm earning a lot of nicknames here. Now I share my thoughts. This is somewhat related... I hate the fact that so much time needed to teach kids Language Arts (reading and Writing), Math, Science or Social Studies is spent teaching kids how to speak Spanish (for my kids 3 times a week for 30 minutes each). I honestly wish that there were no need for it and that we as teachers could just focus our time on teaching a single language (it would have to be English-after all that it the official language used to teach all other subjects in school) and the other neccesities. Some kids don't even have the English language down pat and we're jamming Spanish into their brains. We have a reading specialists in our school and she has a case load of about 30 kids. Almost all of these children are falling behind rapidly because of the fact that English is a second language to them and only Spanish is spoken at home. They just can't catch up at the rate they need to and their proficiently speaking English peers are making hugh strides in the English language both in reading and writing. The Reading Specialist used to just help kids that were in danger of being reviewed by a child study team and being classified or kids that just needed that little extra instruction with phonemic patterns in order to make them more confident when reading. Very frustrating to say the least. I wish it were dealt with as an elective at the Elementary level as well, only allowing kids that could handle it to take it. Back to the originally scheduled broadcast. Edited March 5, 2007 by irish

Wiegie you do not know how long me and the wife fought between Chinese and spanish. I bought the rosetta stone chinese software and she was pissed. She thinks spanish needs ot be learned so they will be able to be better in America in 20 years. I've been telling her they need to know chinese so they can be successful in America in 25 years. People don't want to face the facts that China is about to be "the" global power which includes global power in business and money.
Vicky
A while back, I met a hispanic woman that grew up in Quebec. French (I guess French Canadian) was her first language, and the only one she knew for a while. Then she learned spanish later, and English as a third language sometime after that. She's fluent in all three, but I think she said all of her thought were in French.
