Spoofs on what? The only similarities I can draw between Kill Bill and any other movie is Shoguns Assassin, which they reference in #2...

A spoof on the original Kung-Fu TV show for a start - Bill being David Carradine and all. More than that though, they're just formulaic ultra-violence based on comic books, zero effort required to make or watch. You can make a case for it being a kind of camp art I suppose, in the same way as you can make a case for Andy Warhol being camp art but you'd have to be a loony to compare Warhol with Rembrandt, just as you'd have to be a loony to compare QT with any director of substance.

I'm not saying it's not entertainment - it is. KB1 amused me in the same way as the Sunday comics amuse me. The problem I have with QT is that all his stuff is the same. It's all stylized comic book violence. Reservoir Dogs = Kill Bill 1 = Kill Bill 2 = Pulp Fiction. He has no variety and quite honestly, he's a lazy smarmy arthouse toad, relying entirely on pushing the envelope a little more each time in what he puts on the screen in terms of bits flying off people.

You don't enjoy the genre. We get it.

I do. :D

Back to the point - what is the idea behind a 'Hard R'? Are they more concerned with the violence or sex? Personally, I would be a lot more upset if my children saw a fat guy eating a baby - or someone's head getting cut off - than a 'split beaver' shot.

I know which one would give them nightmares too (as long as its not Rosie O'Donnell up there...)

:D sorry I was unclear. The splits is what the cheerleader is doing (sans panties) when the shot occurs, apparently. I haven't seen it....

First of all, Robert Rodriguez did From Dusk til Dawn, not Tarantino. Second, the film Planet Terror, the one with the machine gun legged girl, was written and directed by Rodriguez.

Finally, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 were much better films than Jackie Brown, which is his worst.

I'd disagree that Jackie Brown deserves to be called his "worst" - but even so, if that's someone's suckiest film, rock on.

The entire thing. They were complete jokes from end to end, unless you take comics seriously. A pair of spoofs was all they were.

I wouldn't call them spoofs - perhaps deconstructions along the lines of The Big Lebowski.

I think the Hard R is to differentiate excessive nudity and violence in mainstream films from straight-up porn.

Right. The porn industry kinda ruined X for mainstream films - so the MPAA switched it to NC-17; of course, all the major theater chains and Blockbuster (not sure about Hollywood Video - I know they stock unrated versions of DVDs but I've never tried to find an NC-17 there) said they wouldn't show/stock movies with the NC-17 rating, so that idea went right down the tubes.

"Hard R" is another attempt to allow filmmakers to push the envelope with sexuality and violence (or crass language, I suppose - Clerks famously got slapped with an NC-17 at first) while still being able to get their movies into mainstream outlets.

hard to muster much interest in watching tarantino gratuitously wanking on genres that are so over-the-top gratuituously wanktastic in the first place.

I'm not really looking at this one as anything more than over-the-top goodness.

Heck, the Rob Zombie and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead's director) might be worth the price of admission.

Anyone seen it yet?

I checked out a couple reviews - PLANET TERROR is first, and sounds like it's over-the-top crazy fun; DEATH PROOF appears to have bit more going on - it's more true to what an actual grindhouse flick would've been, which makes it either entertaining homage or boring, depending on the reviewer.

i haven't seen it yet, but while i was working today there were a ton of idiots who actually left the theater during the intermission, thinking the movie was over.

Hey, I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin', but I think unicorns are kick ass!

"Can't I call them the 'Really Naughty Girls' or something?"

"NO! They get f*cked in the ass, so they're the 'Ass-F*ck Twins'!!!!"

"Well, that's really naughty...."

I saw it last night. here is my take..

I love Rodriguez as a direddtor and his Planet Terror is a joy. If you are not old enough to have seen an old 70's gore-fest type movie, or have never been to a doule feature at an actual grindhous, you will not appreciate either film as much as I do. A lot of shock-horror with extremely graphic scenes of mutilation, decapitation and bloody, pussie, oozing boyles that make you squirm in your seat.

Death Proof is also a fun film. But there is a part of the film that is very drawn-out and boring.

The trailers in between and around the movies are fantastic and the cinimatography is fantastic all around and really takes you back to a time when gore was great and there was true freedom to make a fun film with no boundaries.

Planet Terror: A-

Death Proof: B-

Trailers: B+
