Cameltosis
OK, so I just got my first smoker. Its not a green egg or anything but I am pretty fired up to use it this weekend. I am set with the rub, and the sauce, and how to cook it. Mostly thanks to this board and Alton Brown. But I have no idea where to get the wood. So, where do you guys get it? detlef
Push come to shove, most decent Supermarkets tend to sell it in small bags. Jack Daniels markets bags of shredded wood from used whiskey barrels. Of course, if live in the sticks, you can find better.

Yeah, I'm too lazy to buy it anywhere else so I get it from the Supermarket.
Atlanta Cracker
You can also look at specialty grill stores. Barbecues Galore here is where I get mine as you can get nearly any flavor and get it in big chunks rather than small little shavings. Brewer
Many sporting goods stores carry it as well. Cabelas, Gander Mountain, etc.

Rovers
Any fruitwood is best.... if was further upstate in NY, I could get whatever apple wood I wanted, just for carting it off after the orchard growers have pruned. I have used cherry which is good.... try and get a contact with a local tree service. The prices the stores charge is pretty ridiculous. I often get by using Maple.... and since I just took down a 30 footer, I have tons of it, but it is no where as good a fruit wood. Hickory and Mesquite I have to buy.... but I can usually get my hands on fruitwood.
SheikYerbuti
My local Home Depot and Lowes both have a few different kinds of wood chunks for BBQ.
Chief Dick
Check your local wood store. Apple wood is a good way to start. You will really taste the apple smoke. Lends some extra flavor to the meat.
