The Other Chavez

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — In his opening address of a rare OPEC summit, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned the United States on Saturday that oil prices would further surge if the U.S. contemplates an attack against his country or Iran.

The summit of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries opened Saturday in Saudi Arabia, with heads of states and delegates from 12 of the world's biggest oil-producing nations listening to a recitation from the Quran.

After the quotes from Islam's holy book, Chavez warned that the U.S. should not target OPEC members for foreign policy reasons.

"If the United States attempts the madness of invading Iran or attacking Venezuela again, the price of oil is probably going to reach $200, not just $100," Chavez said

You mean that continuing to pay high oil prices enables enemies of the US to hold power over us?

That's crazy talk. Cheney and W told me that alternative fuel sources are junk science.

We drive semis that are a bit smaller than your over-the-road full-size trucks.

And tank sizes vary, plus it depends on the area you're covering. I cover a fairly compact area, and generally fill up my tanks about once a week. I think my tanks hold about 80 gallons; I did the math once and my truck gets around 7-8 mpg, but that's strict city driving. A weekly fill is in the 50 gallon range for me.

We should have been doing this since the 70's but everything went backward in the 80's.

A commitment to a Moon Landing 60's effort would be painful but far better in the long run. With oil company lobbyists occupying the White House it won't happen anytime soon.

Gas is $3+ a gallon. How much is it when you add in the military costs?

We need some leadership on this and other important issues.

Heck, look at how GM and Ford handle the government attempting to increase fuel standards - instead of just rolling up their sleeves and getting to work (like the Japanese do - someone was telling me the Toyota Titan gets 19 mpg highway), they fum-fuh, whine, and spend money lobbying to avoid doing what is IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE COUNTRY.

GM has handled the increased fuel standards very well. My 2005 Chevy Silverado with a V8 and four-wheel drive gets 18 to 20 mpg on the highway and 16 to 17 mpg around town. The EPA list the Silverado as the most fuel efficient full-size pick-up manufactured, including the imports. :D

P.S. Nissan manufactures the Titan. Toyota manufactures the Tacoma (compact) and Tundra (full-size).

P.S. Crazy Japs that would've enslaved your family manufactures the Titan. More of those crazy Japanese that would've killed you because you are sub-human manufactures the Tacoma (compact) and Tundra (full-size).

Fixed.

He has just threatened the United States of America. I hope we reply to this clown with an overwhelming show of force. I honestly don't understand why so many liberals in the U.S. love this guy. Is his brand of Socialism really what we want here?

These are the same people who swore up and down the seat belt would bankrupt their industry. Until people start voting with their wallet and prove to the US car makers that there's $$ to be made, they aren't gonna do a damn thing they don't have to. Meanwhile the japanese auto-makers, being non-obtuse forward thinking people, have decided to get ahead of the trend.

Well I didn't say ALL liberals, I said "so many"... but if you actually responsded to what I said instead of just trying to insult me, then you wouldn't have much an argument now would you. By the way, I've never watched Sean Hannity even once in my life. If you really think that I'm a person who doesn't think on this board simply because I don't like Chavez' brand of Socialism, then you are just haven't been paying attention. Want to try again?

Well then maybe you could point out your basis for saying "so many" liberals support Chavez? I just have an issue with people spouting off crap like "liberals support x" with x being everything from communisim to baby eating. It's horsepeaches by the bucket as well as being (forgive me) a shortcut to thinking
