Ear Problems

Has anyone ever had a major issue with their ears ? My wife has had an ear ache / fluid problems for over a month now. She went to a ENT specialist a few times and yesterday they decided to give her a tube in the ear that is bothering her for 1 week. The Doctor also drained it in his office. She was supposed to have instant relief and instead she feels worse. She woke up last night in so much pain that we were contemplating a ER trip. We called the Dr this morning but his office was closed. The ear is draining a lot which I told her is a good thing but the pain and inability to hear is obviously troubling to her..Anyone ever deal with anything like this ? If so what was the end result ?

Whomp, the wifey is an audiologist. I asked her what she thought of this. She stated that you shouldn't have any pain associated with tubes. More importantly she said the tube will drain the ear down the eustachian tube and you shouldn't have any draining coming out of the ear. She said it sounds like your wife may have a middle ear infection with effusion (draining). Does it have an odor to it?

Thanks Piles. No no odor but pain..Not as bad as last night but still pretty persistant..The fluid is mostly clear but she also is having little pieces of a tannish fluid coming out that has the consistency of glue. We are waiting for the ent dr to call back. The on call service just paged him. The pain starts in the ear and runs down the back of her ear to her jaw. The draing out of the ear happens when she lays on her side

It sounds like she has a middle ear infection with effusion, which can be painful. Here is some more information for you. Make sure you get a hold of the ENT today because of the pain. They can prescibe an antibiotic. Let us know what happens. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/007010.htm

Sounds like a typical ear infection... I would go see a different doc. Some earaches are caused by bacteria, some by infections, they are commonly mis-diagnosed and one solution does not work for the other.

Thankfully, regular tylenol can really help with the pain, and once they give her the right medicine, it will start to clear in a days time. Don't mess around, these things hurt, go see a different doc.

Does she use qtips?

Piles gave some good info. I'm surprised that after the tube was inserted she had so much pain. Those things are supposed to help. Stay on top of this problem, whomp. In rare cases where the infection gets out of hand, I've seen patients end up with permanent hearing loss.

good luck- sinus and ear infections are tough, and on a side note if the wife has never taken levaquin- monitor that chit closely.

It has some nasty side effects and causes some real adverse reactions in some people, I took it once-never again.

Just an fyi

She got up today and just felt something wasnt right and that it was time for a 2nd opinion. She got an appointment with another specialist and saw him this morning. This guy said she has a very serious ear infection and that the tube wasnt doing squat. It actually slipped out and was just lying in her ear canal so he took it out. He said the fluid that was draining wasnt a good thing. he said along with the Levaquin she needed a prescription drops antibiotic. Since the ear was opened with the tube he said he couldnt give her a strong ear drop antibiotic so he gave her one that was mild that is normally used for the eyes. He said this and the levaquin should clear things up in 10 days. Piles/ Chargerz. I will post the name of the drops later when she gets back from the Pharmacy

Sounds like the first DR needs a new pair of shoes and a swim :D

Seriously though I hope she feels better soon, ear infections are no fun. I had 1 two years ago that made me dizzy and see fuzzy. Elise just got her 1st ear infection since she had tubes put in back in August. She was getting them monthly before that.

i had a pretty brutal ear infection a couple years ago. pain that just built and built and built until....pop goes the eardrum and puss-y chit starts leaking out my ear. oral antibiotics cleared it up after a few days, and my hearing in that ear finally came back a few weeks later. no fun. hope your wife feels better soon, whomp.
