irish
When using my computer here in school, a message continues to pop up. It says- Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that windows runs properly, increase the size of your virtual memory paging file. Sometimes the enitre page doesn't load or it does and then the screen flashes and things disappear. What the hell does that mean? And how can I fix the problem?

irish
yahoo is a wonderful thing. found in 2 seconds ... those search engines can do amazing things. Thanks for the help but it's just as useful/helpful without the sarcasm. I'm having enough trouble posting messages on here, let alone opening IE once I close a window. The pages are incredibly slow and not even all the info loads.

irish
the sarcasm actually is helpful. it hopefully will encourage you to be more self reliant in the future and make better use of the tools at your disposal. i'm trying to teach you to fish. Appreciate the fishing lesson. Working with this dinosaur is a pain in the nuts. You can only be self reliant if you know what resources to use. Therefore, the education is definitely more useful than the sarcasm but I'll accept the help any way I can get it. You showing me the way will encourage me way more than belittling me. I'm a pretty determined guy but when it comes to computer problems, I just need to be shown the way. Thanks again, now back to attempting to fix the virtual memory issues. irish
I agree. My sarcasm detector says it needs more sarcasm. Yeah I guess it couldn't hurt. It's your computer telling you it doesn't want you here either. Are you trying to tell me that our virtual friendship is over the easy way, Tim? twiley
There's some sort of irony in all of this but I'll refrain in order to keep the topic on track. Seriously though, it could be a number of things - too many programs opened at once, too many icons on your desktop, too many emails, etc. Try cleaning it up. You can adjust it under performance and maintenance/advanced tab in your control panel but I would start with my solution above because you're more than likely going to screw your computer up because of YOUR low virtual memory. Thanks for the help Twiley and I appreciate you keeping things on track. I had 3 windows opened at once and closed 2 of them. The message hasn't popped up since. I'm going to look into getting rid of useless icons on my desktop, however, some of them I don't even know what they're for and therefore, don't want to screw things up. There's no doubt about my low virtual memory when it comes to me trying to play computer techie. There were times in the past that I had more than 3 windows opened at once and never got messages about virtual memory. So there has to be other issues that I'm not aware of. rocknrobn26
If the hard drive hasn't been cleaned recently, d/l this prog: Cleanup!...... I'd recommend turning off "cookies" under it's option menu if you have a lot of saved PW's and such. If not, run it as it is. It may not solve all your problems, but it's a start. Btw.......ho much free space do you have on your drive? How much RAM in the system? When you say windows are you talking about prog windows (like Word, Excell, outlook, etc..) or IE/Firefox windows? Any other stats about the system would be helpful.
AtomicCEO
Sounds like you need to add a few more virtual memory chips. I can sell you some at a bulk rate discount.
irish
Do they have technology specialists in your school? We have one and he's great! We don't. We have a helpdesk that we send an email to and they only come out...well I've never seen them, so I'm not sure they do. Sounds like you're still on Windows 95. I believe it might be and if not then '98. I think he may actually be using a Commodore 64 Funny you mention that as that was my first computer ever. I did all my reports for school on that and was tortured by the Turtle Graphics program. I'd sit in front of that friggin' thing and enter in about 1,000 lines of code and at the end type in RUN. If I did everything right, a sailboat would sail across the screen. If I did it wrong I had to check all the lines to see where I screwed up. I have picked up how to do some things by myself but am pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff. No further comments needed on me being clueless on other stuff as well. By the way, I did mean IE windows and I will get back to you when I figure out the other stats. Thanks for the help. Ursa Majoris
I believe I might be and if not then '98. Ask for a new PC on the grounds that yours is a security threat. Windows 98 has not been supported for security updates since July 2006.
