Hydrazine is some nice stuff. After the shuttle went down we would find piles of dead dear who walked up to check out the wreckage. Then the buzzards would fly down to feed on the deer, and they would die.

That is really "need to know" information about stuff falling out of the sky. Yikes...

The best thing is that it is had an odor. The problem is that is so lethal you are dead before you collect enough to smell. Good times, good times.

My guess is they do it over the Pacific, but when Sky Lab fell it spewed all over the Outback in Australia. They're not that good at landing such things.

My guess is it also has a lot of spy crap they don't want on ebay.

I'm still bummed Bush, Jr. retreated from Saddam's invitation to a duel. That would have been awesome, either way.

The biggest PR risk is from the hydrazine. If the tank doesn't break up and burn the contents upon re-entry, it could potentially crash intact. The bird has never been controlled since launch, so its safe to say the hydrazine load is full. That's a good amount of nasty stuff they don't want to have to clean up.

Also doesn't hurt to make sure all the big secret parts get broken up into little bitsy tiny parts.

If they task an AEGIS cruiser to do the shoot, that thing is toast. But it gives the Russians and Chinese a look at how we do things... and unlike the Chinese, the Pentagon doesn't like to tip its hand to a potential adversary.

You don't clean up hydrazine. If it is leaking it will rapidly dissipate into the atmosphere. If it is sealed, you load the tanks up and haul them away. It is like cleaning up oxygen, not oil.

Agreed, it would not be like cleaning up an oil spill - though hydrazine is a liquid at room temp it does evaporate in air or dissolve in water over time. If the tank were to somehow survive rentry (unlikely, but possible), it would most certainly rupture when it hit terra firma, potentially releasing the contents over a wide area depending upon the topography of the impact site, wind, etc.

Let's see then...if they miss then we have a missile warhead and an old satellite coming back...it keeps getting better and better.

They should have done this then afterwards told everyone. Or waited and see if anyone was the wiser (capabilities?).

They could have used as an intel gathering event. (Lets see who knows we shot it down)
