Riffraff
Crazy fast computers. This new generation of petascale machines will move scientific simulation beyond just supporting the two main branches of science, theory and experimentation, and into the foreground. Instead of just hypotheses being tested with experiments and observations, large-scale extrapolation and prediction of things we can't observe or that would be impractical for an experiment, will become central to many scientific endeavors. "It's getting to the point where simulation is actually the third branch of science," Pretty cool.
muck
Simulation should allow for much better stress testing of various types of investment risks ... fwiw ...
The Holy Roller
Stimulation has always been my favorite branch of science.
DemonKnight
So my computer 30 years ago took up a whole room. That means when I'm sixty I should be talking teraflops instead of megabytes right?
BiggieFries
So my computer 30 years ago took up a whole room. That means when I'm sixty I should be talking teraflops instead of megabytes right? FYI... megabytes typically refers to storage capacity in some way, shape or form. teraflops refers to computing power. wiegie
Simulation should allow for much better stress testing of various types of investment risks ... fwiw ... yep--I know that simulations are pretty popular in economics research right now
cre8tiff
FYI... megabytes typically refers to storage capacity in some way, shape or form. teraflops refers to computing power. And they are already shipping desktops with Terabyte or more of storage. When you are sixty, we may be talking Petabytes for sure. EDIT TO ADD: (And that may be in the sense of "Can you believe my laptop ONLY has a petabyte? Man, I need to upgrade bad.") polksalet
Idiocy, making predictions with so many variables leads to inevitable failure. See "climate change".
