polksalet
I didn't know you worked in repo. I ran into a repo friend of mine the other day. You wouldn't believe how much they are repoing if I told you.
Randall
I've been fraked since mid-October, thanx for asking. Sorry. 60 minutes had a show about a town of about 12,000 in Ohio that was very dependent on DHL that may be closing. Some towns are totally dependent on one industry and get hit hard. Then I saw 43,000 more cuts were announced this morning. Edited January 26, 2009 by Randall
i_am_the_swammi
The private equity firm that supplies our funds for growth cut 8 today. Some great talented people. Fortunately, our fund is already raised...we are just waiting to deploy the money when the time is right. My brother and nephew were both laid off in the last two months, though...both blue-collar guys in shipping. They are very worried, have interviewed numerous times...no takers. tazinib1
Warner Brothers Studios is cutting 800 jobs. Good lord...hopefully the SAG strike situation gets resolved quickly. I'm barely surviving making commercials for the likes of Mor's Furniture For Less. I could use a new tv show...thats usually an 8 month work block. fingfootball
They just laid off over 70 people (out of 700) at the factory my wife works at. She kept her job for now, thank goodness.

The same area where a proposal for a casino was voted down this past election said to create 10,000 jobs with restaurants , golf course , hotels and the casino. I'm sure everyone in town that voted against the bill is regretting it now. I'm sandwiched between DHL and GM plants that have all closed in last few months. Really ominous looking local economy around here. Being in new construction , it's been getting difficult to keep work lined up.
darin3
I can't even get dinky part-time gigs to respond to me. Guess I'm totally over-qualified. Can't land new clients. Don't really have the experience/education to move into a new industry.
irish
Wifes coworkers husband. Had been with the same company for 30 years in sales. He doesn't have a college degree. He's toast. Similar situation here. My father has been an accountant for almost 40 years and has been laid off. Back when he first got into accounting, not much was required. He has obviously learned a ton on the job however, he has no more than a High School degree. Gotta wonder what's going to happen.
Jimmy Neutron
It's getting ugly. More and more people I know are losing their jobs. There is a HUGH slow down in over the road trucking - not sure how much of that decrease is reflected in the economic woes being reported. Scary... Scary... My brother is a longshoreman in Long Beach. He says almost nothing is coming in compared to early last year. And he says the ships going out are mostly empty. SWIFT (large trucking co.) had 214 trucks in SoCal last week trying to get out. Very glad my core business is medical supplies and not a more volatile commodity. bushwacked
Our company continues to hire, but it's environmental consulting stuff, so we are fairly insulated to the economic crash.
darin3
wanna go to Mao land? Not really, but if it's a contract position, I'd definitely consider it. I can hold a stick. I'll give you a holler tomorrow.
splotchman
My company laid off about 250 people out of about 2,000 here in RTP. I'm a marketing guy working for the sales organization in which my direct team lost 4 of 14 people and our division lost 90+ people out of about 450 about 3 weeks ago. I fortunately was spared, but carnage everywhere. Lots of my talented friends got laid off. Sad times, folks, sad times.

Really ominous looking local economy around here. Being in new construction , it's been getting difficult to keep work lined up. That's tough. They said they wanted DHL to give them the airstrip. If they become a cooperative they may be successful. Porter Cable and other companies that were taken over by employees have succeeded, I don't like DHL. They have contracts with some computer companies and have to use them for shipping. They don't deliver here. They next day air packages to Minneapolis but because they won't come here they drop the packages in the mail and it takes several days longer to get here than if they'd just mail them. Yet they have to use them. It drives me nuts. I say "you have to use them but they won't deliver here"? "You can't use UPS or Fedex?" I'm certain they could run the business better. Riffraff
I recently went back to the old grindstone. (Shakes fist at the economy for shortening my vacation) Great people, great benefits, great pay, and a great purpose to go to work each day. Can't complain a bit. The person that started the same day as me is a goner though. Just didn't cut the mustard.
nhoops
I'm a Civil Engineer and I've been laid off since the end of September. New company I was working for was bought out and new owners decided not to go in the direction that my boss hired me for. I was brought in to build/run a new department. We did leave on good terms. Had some hits from recruiters and just had an interview for a job I applied for in December so things are picking up. I'm not giving up hope but it is a little scary and frustrating.
