If you had to move to Pennsylvania...

What part of the state would you live in and why? And before you go into 'why in the hell would you want to move there' it's job related...

My 1st criteria is decent to great public schools (probably rules out Philly)

My 2nd criteria is fishing...

pretty much any area is going to be close to a decent public school. No certain area is known for great schools. As far as the fishing goes, I would stay near the north central part of the state. That way you get two opening days of trout. Certain counties in the east start two weeks earlier than the rest of the state. My nine year old is fired up for his first opening day this saturday. After we catch our limit we are scouting for a cabin.

One question. So work takes you to Pa? But no special part of the state is required?

I will say, living near Pittsburgh and near Philly are two different animals. Pittsburgh is still a very small town atmosphere. Philly has that NY/NJ influence. Not that living in Philly isn't cool, but the two cities move at different speeds.

Central PA near State College. Penn State is there, the local school districts are well funded and decently run and just up the road there is a town named Fishermans Paradise. They have some of the best trout fishing in the country there. I wouldn't stray too far from State College as you get into some Amish type and backwater towns pretty quick though.

Job entails covering hospitals in the entire state, so they said they just want someone that lives somewhere in Pennsylvania...

In that case I would recommend someplace like Carlisle or Harrisburg. You are right on the pike and equal distance from both Phil and Pitt.

I live 45 minutes east of State College and the above post is exaggerrated.

The Susquehanna has some of the best smallmouth fishing in the country and I can see it out my kitchen window. I am also within 30 minutes of 5 different trout streams and those are just approved trout waters, not to mention native trout streams. Less than an hour to 4 lakes off the top of my head.

The Susquehanna Health System of hospitals are here also. 45 minutes to Geisinger Hostpital and about an hour to Sayre. What else do you wanna know ABWF? Feel free to shoot me a PM.

Thanks for that info...

What part of the state gets the least amount of snow?

Not sure; the southern tier I guess, but here in central Pa. it ain't like living in Buffalo or anything. Northwest corner gets alot of lake effect snow.

Good info...it's not for sure yet as I'm just in the interview phase but it would be a gigantic leap for my career path to take that position.

I live in Scranton (North-East PA) & the schools are good. Not great but good. We have 3 local hospitals 1 of which is a big heart hospital. As far as fishing I have no clue. I think we have a few spots but I don't fish.

My sincerest condolences.

GB Dunder Mifflin. You go Dwight.

Anyway:

You've never been there have you?

I googled Penn State and it came up with a bunch of different campuses...what's considered the main campus?

State College, dumbass. jeebus

Have you ever heard of Joe Paterno?

Seriously I would say State College (aka University Park) too esp if you love college football (don't have to be a PSU fan). Somewhere outside of Pitt a close 2d if you want more "city life" kinda thing.

Dude, have you ever been to Half Moon Township? I have. No exageration at all. That's 15 minutes from the Penn State main campus. Also known as University Park for ABWF. How about Milheim? That's half way between State College and Lewisburg which I drove every day (sucked with a capital S in the winter). They have the Hotel (pronounced Hodle) and that's about it. Just outside Milheim there was Sri's, a combination American, Italian, Thai food joint (pretty good actually). Horse drawn buggy's used to stop by for take out (I kid you not). Selinsgrove is just south of Lewisburg and it too is a nice, quaint town.

Altoona and Belefonte are the next two largest burgs near State College. Williamsport (home of the Little League Hall of Fame and World Series) is about half an hour. All are quiet charming ex-manufacturing towns. All a little gone to seed but still nice and quaint. Lewiston is much the same but south of the State College.

Yes, perhaps I used a bit of poetic license there, but the fact remains, it is an odd mixture of new and old, past and present in central PA.

millheim actually has a nice little micro-brew now, but as much as some of the smaller towns are nice, i can't complain about what penn state has to offer us. plenty of good fishing and hunting, decent places to shop, nice selection of pubs and restaurants, airport with a hour long jump to detroit, penn state sports, minor league baseball, and as mentioned earlier, pretty decent public schools. if you want more detailed information, let me know.

hbtc, where are you at 45 minutes east of here? i worked in lewisburg and lived in danville last year until we moved out here.

Yes I have. Lived in Carlisle and have relatives all over that area. Last there in 2005.

He said that he would be going all around the state. Well, you can't ask for a better location than right smack dab in the middle... equal distance to both major cities and easy access to all the rest. Plus, I remember the fishing to be quite excellent.

Dunder Mifflin, SWB Yankees (Triple A Baseball), SWB Pioneers (Minor League Arena Football), SWB Penguins (Minor League Hockey), Indoor & Outdoor Concerts, & Casino (slots only) all within 20 minutes. Plus Nascar races twice a year 45 minutes away.

It's not a great city but it's not awful.

Oh there are a few Amish farms 15 or 20 miles from me. I don't dispute that. I just read what you posted as "once you stray outside of State College it's all Amish and backwater country" which isn't true at all.

Forgot I need to be by a major airport...probably limits it to Philly and Pittsburgh...

not 100% sure about fishing but you might want to check out the Yardley/Newtown area...about an 45 minutes outside of Philly and very close to 95 as well as the PA TPKE ...from what i remember both of those areas are supposed to be two of the top school districts in PA
