Clubfoothead
Forgot I need to be by a major airport...probably limits it to Philly and Pittsburgh... Reading isn't too far from Philly. Not sure about the schools, I've heard the economy there is horrible but it sure was pretty when I was there.
keggerz
Forgot I need to be by a major airport...probably limits it to Philly and Pittsburgh... fwiw, I usually went out of Newark which was farther(but still not a bad drive) then Philly but I usually flew Continental...I didnt really dislike Philly but I think they are a US Air hub and my company never seeemed to use US Air
i_am_the_swammi
I may be biased, but the Philly burbs have the best schools in the state. Google Radnor, Treddyfrin, Methacton, Owen J Roberts, Downington, Perkiomen Valley, Central Bucks, Neshaminy, North Penn. I live in the Collegeville area. Dozens of renowned hospitals within a 1 hour drive (Lankenau, UPenn, CHOP, Abington, Paoli, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Mercy Suburban, Lansdale, Holy Redeemer, Pottstown, Montgomery are all within 45 minutes of me). City is 45 minutes from me. Easy drive. Four major sports teams, plenty of history (obviously), all the major arts and attractions(theater, concerts, Art Musuem, Nations 1st zoo). 15 minutes to Valley Forge. 90-120 minutes to the beach towns/Atlantic City. 2 hours to New York. 90 minutes to the Poconos. 3 hours to Washington DC. 60 minutes to Lancaster/Amish Country. Plenty to do as you get to know the area. Not into fishing, but I have plenty of friends that enjoy trout /bass fishing closeby. Many also venture into deep-sea fishing charters from the beach areas. Or, you could live near Pittsburgh and visit Cleveland. Feel free to PM me with any questions you have about the area, or if you need a hotel if you are visiting the area. We also own the Embassy SUites at Pittsburgh Airport, so let me know if I can help you on that end of the state.
i_am_the_swammi
Reading isn't too far from Philly. Not sure about the schools, I've heard the economy there is horrible but it sure was pretty when I was there. Reading would be a 90 minute drive to Philly airport...closer to two hours during rush hours. If you have to fly often, it wouldn't be a fun ride. If you're flying infrequently, then it would be doable.

I don't know too much about PA aside from two trips to Reading and the Greyhound station in Pittsburg. I don't know but I would think their public schools might have money issues as well. But I did find it to be a very prettya rea.

Kid Cid
FWIW, State College Airport has grown considerably and you can catch hops to Philly and Pitt from there.
Skippy
I am bias toward the Pittsburgh side of the state and much like Swammi suggested with the burbs of Philly, we also have some great burbs around Pittsburgh that have some excellent public school systems. I also very much like where Kid is coming from as far as State College area. It is a very nice part of the state that is growing. However, if the need to be pretty close the airport without jumping short rides out of State College is important then I think the burbs of Pitt or Philly is going to be your only answer. Choppy
I have some relation in Broomall which is a small burb just east of Philly. Only spent a small amount of time there but really liked the area. Sounds like Swammi is your best source here. Good luck.

Zooty
Reading would be a 90 minute drive to Philly airport...closer to two hours during rush hours. If you have to fly often, it wouldn't be a fun ride. If you're flying infrequently, then it would be doable. I'm in Reading. Philly airport is about an hour. I can usually do it in under an hour. Its not bad, either 422 or the Turnpike, briefly on the Schuylkill then the Blue Route to the airport. Only place I have trouble is the blue route occasionally but having to be at the airport 2-3 hours early as it is I've never had an issue. Regardless. There is a decent size airport in Allentown/ Bethlehem (ABE) and Harrisburg. Hburg is probably the most central if you need to cover the whole state. (I can't vouch for the State College Airport). If you need fishing too, I think you're probably covered anywhere in the state. School districts are hit and miss everywhere in the state. In my area there are a couple good ones and the rest are not so great. I'm biased but I would say stick to Harrisburg and anything to the east of it on the turnpike corridor. Then at least you are close enough to Philly to get to football games.
Retrograde assault
I don't have the foggiest idea about the best places to live in Pa, but I've been to Gettysburg and I could see myself living around there.

Per Mapquest: Estimated Time: 1 hour 18 minutes Estimated Distance: 70.08 miles Mapquest assumes optimal 55 MPH driving conditions, which are impossible to count on unless your flight is arriving and departing at 3:00AM. My best friend lives in Mount Penn, and he gives himself 1.5-2 hours, since there is inevitably something under construction and/or at almost all times. No idea how you get there in under an hour...you must be averaging better than 70 MPH the entire way, and not have to hit your brakes ever. But reading is a nice area, and Daniel Boone SD is a solid school district. If you wanted to live in Berks County, though, I'd opt for the Douglasville area and split the difference....half-hour to King of Prussia, half-hour to Reading, just over an hour to Philly. BeeR
Yes I have. Lived in Carlisle and have relatives all over that area. Last there in 2005. He said that he would be going all around the state. Well, you can't ask for a better location than right smack dab in the middle... equal distance to both major cities and easy access to all the rest. Plus, I remember the fishing to be quite excellent. Yeah but in between trips he'd actually have to LIVE there. And how does being "equal distance to both major cities" matter anyway? If he's farther from one he's closer to the other - ie it all balances out anyway - so why not be near one or the other? Can't say re the fishing. Dunder Mifflin, SWB Yankees (Triple A Baseball), SWB Pioneers (Minor League Arena Football), SWB Penguins (Minor League Hockey), Indoor & Outdoor Concerts, & Casino (slots only) all within 20 minutes. Plus Nascar races twice a year 45 minutes away. It's not a great city but it's not awful. ...if you're heavy into minor league sports, apparently. whoo hoo, minor league arena football, what an enticement

I'm actually closer to Morgantown and the turnpike than most of Reading. I can be in KoP in 40 minutes and I do drive about 75 422 will always be slower then the TP From my house Total Estimated Time: 1 hour 16 minutes Total Estimated Distance: 66.87 miles I can shave a good 16 minutes off that. TDFFFreak
Like keg said, there are some great school systems in the Philly suburbs. If you don't have to live in the actual state of Pennsylvania, check out Cherry Hill, NJ. It's a short trip into Philly and Pennsylvania, plus it's my understanding that the school system there is solid.
FWmaker
usually don't like to hijack a thread, but seeing this is about 2 yrs old... I'm heading to Harrisburg, PA for business on Monday 5/21st. Anyone around for Drinks, etc?
Menudo
Just keep in mind that the state of Pennsylvania actually tilts towards the West side of the state, due to their being many more shiny, new championship trophies on that side of the state. Seriously, State College, Harrisburg/Hershey area, Philly Burbs, and Pittsburgh Burbs are all great places to live.

Actually western Pennsylvania if mountanout with the Allengahies and thus higher elevations, while eastern Pennsylvania is closer to the ocean ans thue lower elevation, so things would generally tilt to the east.
Duchess Jack
What part of the state would you live in and why? And before you go into 'why in the hell would you want to move there' it's job related... My 1st criteria is decent to great public schools (probably rules out Philly) My 2nd criteria is fishing... For schools, I'd go Bucks county. Its close to Philly, NYC and Hunterdon Country NJ. Descent place. Probably not as good as fishing as in further in the state, but I am sure there is some.
detlef
I'd move to Downington so I'd be close to Victory Brewing Co.
matt770
My wife is from Philly and I've seen a lot of PA, and I can say I wouldn't want to live there. Lots of areas are picturesque though, like the Susquehanna river valley in the Harrisburg area, and the western PA mountains. Pittsburgh is a lot of fun to visit, but much of that area is very redneck.
