Palin resigning as Alaska governor

WASILLA, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26 but didn't announce her plans.

"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose," Palin said in a statement released by her office.

"It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success," she said.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month, Palin spokesman Dave Murrow said.

Palin was first elected in 2006 on a populist platform. But her popularity has waned as she waged in partisan politics following her return from the presidential campaign. Her term would have ended in 2010.

I'm glad she decided to "protect our great state" by resigning.

Now if she could just convince Arnold to do the same thing in California.......... :D

So you establish yourself as a credible presidential candidate by quitting your job?

No doubt someone will spin it that way.

Tim Pawlenty just announced he won't run for a third term and he's a credible GOP candidate. Not quite the same thing though, admittedly. I'm wondering if there's some scandal a-brewing in the background.

Maybe she has to pay the $500,000 in legal fees she accumulated fighting the baseless claims against her by liberals during the election. Maybe she got tired of being called an idiot, while Biden got an absolute free pass. Maybe she got tired to the trig questions, and of comedians making fun of her family. My guess is she jut got tired if it all, and got an offer in the private sector that will help her quickly pay off the debt she accumulated fighting the lawsuits. She probably talked it over with the family, and the family said they'd love to be out of the spot light, and would love a little extra money. Honestly does anyone ever remember a politicians family being brought up more than hers? You can say what you will about her intelligence (though she is every bit as capable as Biden), her family deserved much better than they got.

True.

and I don't think the whole Trig thing would have been so big if Palin wasn't a proponent of abstinance only education.

What "baseless claims"?

You should be quietly delighted if she fades from the scene. It's the Democrats who should be disappointed.

All politicians trot their families out on stage with them, but I don't recall any family being attacked the way the Palin family was attacked. It was disgraceful.

I'll be more than happy if she never runs for public office again, as I thought she was a very bad choice by McCain. That doesn't change the fact that the attacks on her and her family were way out of line. Biden is bigger bumbling idiot than Palin every thought about being. Can you honestly recall another politician's family that was attacked in a campiagn the way the Palins were?

You have to be kidding. Palin was surely a Democrat plant - apart from her address to the faithful at the VP nomination, her every word was catastrophic. Couric didn't even try to trip her up - indeed she gave Palin every chance to impress and Palin showed herself to be completely out of her depth. Biden isn't remotely close to Palin's level of stupidity. She seemed completely unaware of anything.

As for her family, I recall vicious jibes at Chelsea Clinton. Personally, I detest bringing families into campaigns on either side and I wish (though it's impractical) they could be completely anonymous. However, as long as politicians wheel them on, they are going to be carrying targets.
