Jay should have just gone away. If he goes back to 11:00 and pushes Conan back its a snakey chitty move. Jay struggled in the ratings at first against Letterman , just as Conan is now. If not for hugh Grant he would have always been 2nd fiddle. IMO Letterman is far superior to all of them.

This is all NBC's fault. Much as I'm not a Leno fan, you can't tag this on him. He was killing with the Tonight Show, but NBC feared losing Conan and made the deal that Leno would give it up last year. Then they feared losing Leno and offered him the prime time slot (which conveniently also saved them gobs of money in writing and production of 10pm slot dramas). They screwed the pooch all around.

Leno would have stayed at the 11:30 forever if he could have, I'm thinking and yes, Conan would likely have moved on, but c'est la vie. Now the whole thing's a huge clusterflock. Letterman must giggle himself to sleep each night.

I've yet to see a talk show host since Carson who wasn't pretty if not very lame. Well actually Jimmy Kimmel isn't bad from what I saw of him, but like the others he seems to be obsessed (or directed) to do some kind of "schtick." It's all very old. What was great about Carson was he was just kinda being Carson and was a very "real" person.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I

want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second

feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I

love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky.

That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my

bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight

Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson

every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant

everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed

up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally

hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the

future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would

have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of

ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting

audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months,

with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their

terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their

long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight

Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years

the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I

sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to

accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider

to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight

Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move

I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David

Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot.

That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be

unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy

hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is

for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably

hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The

Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its

destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the

Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I

believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set

the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have

no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this

quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of,

for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair;

it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Nice

I like Conan. But I don't really spend that much time watching any of the late shows. Leno always seemed the most boring to me. Letterman is good for a few laughs from time to time. I hope Conan goes to Fox.

I was never a big Conan fan until his run of shows in Chicago, which was the first time I ever caught the masturbating bear. For some reason, that humor just clicked with me and I've enjoyed his stuff ever since. People forget too that he was a producer on the early run of the Simpsons.

I find it hard to feel bad/concerned about a couple of multi-millionaires. I would like to have the financial ability to walk away from my 'job,' with no current prospects, because it started a half hour later.

And I agree, there have been none more entertaining than Carson.

So I guess the whole gigolo thing didn't work out?

Similar to developing a psychology practice, it takes a certain amount of time to build a reputation and a client list in a brand new field.

It seems there's going to be an opening for late night tv host coming up soon. Keep your options open.

what would they call Saturday Night Live if they moved it to 12:05am? I am not a fan of Conan or Jay but don't dislike either of them...I do think Conan has a point though.

Conan is going to be even richer once NBC has to pay him for breach of contract. Then when he's forced to leave, FOX will sign him to a nice deal.

I hope NBC enjoys it's tanking late night shows. They messed up hiring Leno in the first place and are continuing to let the ship burn by coddling to him, eventhough the ratings show that no one likes him.

conan is funnier than leno, but that's about all I can say for him. I used to love letterman, but he seems to be getting stale. about the only ones I like are that scottish guy and kimmel, but even with them I will only watch if I happen to be channel surfing late at night. I guess the whole genre just doesn't interest me much anymore.
