Is a bottle of scotch a good gift for a christmas party?

Going to my bosses in a little while. The last two times I took wine. Wanted to get something a little different so I picked up a bottle of Glenfiddich "Distillery Edition" scotch. I know that there are a few scotch drinkers on the site. This is 102 proof which seems high. I bought it because of the name and the packaging. Is it a dumb gift if you aren't sure if the people drink scotch? Or since they have a nice bar does that even matter?

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "for a christmas party." Do you mean something to open up at the party?

What you bought is "cask strength" scotch. It is more intense than "regular" scotch. It has a higher alcohol content. Its not chill filtered, so it may be a bit cloudy. You are also going to want to add a little water to it.

Given the above, I would not give cask strength scotch to a novice scotch drinker. I wouldn't bring one to a party either if the intent was for the bottle to be opened at a party, particularly if the host was a novice scotch drinker. The host will likely destroy the scotch by using mixers with it or similar and you'll look like a tool if you try to counsel him on how to drink it. Plus your casual drinker may not appreciate the intensity of a cask stregth scotch, particularly if he/she doesn't understand the desirability of adding water to it.

If I was going to bring a bottle of scotch with me to a party for the host to open up, it would be a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label.

If your boss is a scotch drinker, and you're giving it to him for him to enjoy at his leisure, I think that its a fine gift.

Just gave the gift to be enjoyed at a different time (along with the 30 bottles of wine folks brought).
