Hugh 0ne
Why don't we say that we will issue a green card to any person who goes to the Gulf with a mop and a bucket and keeps the beaches and wetlands clean. Any illegal alien remaining in the country after the oil is cleaned up will be instantly deported (police will be instructed to stop EVERYONE they say see for the next two months following the clean-up efforts and ask for their papers--you ain't got em, you get deported). And while we are at it, why don't we make everyone on welfare go down there and help clean-up too. Three birds, one stone. Giant sponges dummkopf, mops and buckets won't work. Square
They could do something to help prevent the encroaching oil? Fire a torpedo to the hole and cave the earth on top... I saw this and thought of you guys. When the Soviets had leaking oil wells they couldn't seal, they nuked them Maybe we laughed a little too fast? Although I'm sure someone more qualified has already done a risk assessment on this and decided it wasn't a viable option. Thought it was interesting that it has happened 5 times in the past (latest one being in the 70s though).

Perchoutofwater
The decision by the department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) to give BP's lease at Deepwater Horizon a "categorical exclusion" from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on April 6, 2009 -- and BP's lobbying efforts just 11 days before the explosion to expand those exemptions -- show that neither federal regulators nor the company anticipated an accident of the scale of the one unfolding in the gulf. Obama is the bigget recipient of BP cash. Somehow or another I'm sure this will all be Bush's fault when the dust settles.
Rebellab
The decision by the department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) to give BP's lease at Deepwater Horizon a "categorical exclusion" from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on April 6, 2009 -- and BP's lobbying efforts just 11 days before the explosion to expand those exemptions -- show that neither federal regulators nor the company anticipated an accident of the scale of the one unfolding in the gulf. Obama is the bigget recipient of BP cash. Somehow or another I'm sure this will all be Bush's fault when the dust settles. Here you go perch. In what will most likely be the first of many lawsuits, Waterkeeper Alliance, founded by Robert F. Kennedy, JR. has filed a class action lawsuit against the government for the explosion of the Deep Horizon oil drilling rig. According to Kennedy, Waterkeeper Alliance has spent 25 years representing the interests of commercial fisherman, an industry that stands to take a huge economic blow, if oil seeps into estuaries off the gulf coast, where 41% of the nation’s seafood comes from. If oil gets into the coastal estuaries and marshes, it will adversely affect future viability and harvest of shrimp, crab, oysters, and mussels. Kennedy, speaking in an interview on CNN, said of the explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, “it was caused by carelessness. There have been 858 spills and explosions to a lesser degree since 2001, because the Bush administration lifted federal oversight of offshore oil rigs. It became the Wild West. The budget was cut and acoustic regulators that should have been in place to trigger a defensive action to plug the hole—was not required.” British Petroleum was contacted by CNN officials for a statement, but they did not respond. Tom Bower, author of the 2009 book The Squeeze, Oil, Money and Greed in the 21st Century, reported that British Petroleum's budget cuts led to a lack of engineers, an overdependence on outsourcing, and a lack of subcontractors oversight. “What began as a human tragedy,” said Lisa Jackson, the head of the EPA at Friday’s press conference, “has turned into an environmental disaster.” The press conference in Louisiana was attended by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Carol Browner, officials from NOAA, and many more. Although local authorities have been hiring fishermen to go out and lay more boom barriers and the Coast Guard is anticipated to join the effort, it is feared the booms won’t be effective enough to keep oil out of an area that contains some of the nation’s richest estuaries. Once the oil gets in, it never gets out. “We have to do everything possible,” said Governor Jindal, “to protect our coasts, wildlife, our environment, and our people.” Preparations are being made for wildlife rescue, with 160 biologists staged for work along the Gulf Coast oil slick. The oil spill has been leaking over 210,000 gallons of oil into the water every day. The spill has become the size of Delaware and has slowly moved inland to threaten the coasts of Louisiana and parts of Florida and Mississippi. Experts are saying it could take months to shut off the gushing hole in the rig that capsized a day after the explosion and is currently laying a mile down on the ocean floor. President Obama announced that it is the responsibility of London-based British Petroleum to plug the hole and clean up the oil, but the federal government has a responsibility to mitigate the damage. Friday’s gathering of U.S. officials in Louisiana for the press conference was the first in a long line of activities that will be conducted. Ken Salazar has already ordered safety inspections of all offshore oil rigs in the Gulf Coast. “We cannot rest until BP has closed off the well and has cleaned up every drop of oil,” said Salazar. The timing couldn’t be worse for President Obama, who recently made a public announcement that his administration intended to explore more offshore drilling potential along the northern Gulf and off the shores of Alaska. Furthermore, in response to the Deep Horizon tragedy, the president has said there will be no more permits issued for exploratory drilling until a thorough investigation and more studies have been done to advance safety. While the public, environmentalists, and several US Senators are calling for the president to rethink his energy strategy toward more oil drilling, Sarah Palin has not backed off her stand on drilling for more oil from a recent speech in which she called for no more studies and no more “stall, baby, stall”. However, Robert Kennedy believes the US, which currently imports a billion gallons of oil from “people we don’t trust,” should be moving away from dependence on oil and fossil fuels. The explosion of the Deep Horizon is a stark reminder of how inept oil corporations are at controlling and containing massive and irreparable damage to wildlife and local economies from the toxic sludge. Whether the leak is 50 miles from shore or 125 miles, it will eventually make its way to land, because current regulations don’t have sound effective plans for capture and recovery. Kennedy concluded his interview with these disturbing words, “It has been 26 years since the Exxon Valdez catastrophe and the salmon runs still have not recovered.” The source of the Deep Horizon explosion remains unknown. Nor did it mention how much money has been given to Republicans, including Bush, over the years. It goes both way Perch, they ALL have had their hand in the cookie jar and everyone with a lick of sense knows that. This isn't a Liberal vs Conservative argument, both sides are to blame and neither any more than the other. But go right ahead & make it a political argument just like everything else. For starters, I'm not prepared to assume anyone major is not culpable in this regard. However, I find it amazing that arm-chair hacks love to hold the feet of the government to the fire while ignoring their own feet. We all stand on the sidelines, acting like we know everything, yelling that our gov't should do this or shouldn't do that. But really, the only thing we have on them is the luxury of distance and the fact that there's no way we get blamed for the mess. However, judging by how guys like you have chastised each and every Bush policy he's rolled back in the name of not rocking the economic boat, taking a hard line here would cause an uproar as well. So, we're in a war, essentially over oil. We've dragged our feet forever on finding alternatives to oil. Our economy is really strained. So, if Obama comes out swinging his dick over cracking down on regulations for off-shore oil, guys like you would absolutely freak out. But you're too swaddled in your own freaking cowardice and ignorance to ever realize that you and me, and every idiot out there who clamors for action is just as much to blame as the guys scrambling to win our support. This is the government we deserve. Because we know freaking everything.

I just love the audacity of people like Kennedy blaming Bush but ignoring what our wonderful leader and his gang have done. One more reason we need to clean up Washington while we are cleaning up the Gulf.

Gee, I'm honored Actually, the other alternative is to not pretend that each and every person who doesn't agree with you is just walking lockstep with the socialist party and assumes that Obama can do no wrong. That everyone who doesn't think guns are cool wants to abolish them. That changing one's mind is not a sign of weakness. Things like that. rattsass
Deregulation leads to disasters. It led to disaster on Wall Street. It led to the disaster in the Gulf. And it is quite evident that big business is NOT capable of responsibility. It is sad indeed, but the group we have in Washington is the only thing between us and "greed fatalities." Big government seems a necessary evil. Corporate greed that allows a monumental tragedy like this to happen just to save themselves 500,000 on a failsafe method of containment is criminal. The fact that the US allows this to happen is criminal as well. I am really pissed off that people don't seem to realize the scope of this disaster. We have diaper dirt our own bed big-time. The corporations are in control. And their whores keep doing their bidding. And this is what we get. I put this together on Saturday just for kicks. I haven't seen anything showing that BP has done anything wrong, or cut any corners. If I'm wrong, please show me. I've heard people like you on the left claiming BP needs to be responsible and we need the government to make them responsible, but BP has already pledged 35% more money than the federal government requires of them for the clean up. In fact BP has vowed to clean it all up. Your rant about Wall Street is ridiculous. Current regulations weren't being enforced and Fanny and Freddy had as much if not more to do with the Wall Street melt down as anything.
