geeteebee
How about we make a list of acceptable sports:Tournament Martial Arts 875564 Cool, so JCVD's Bloodsport can be included. Kumate! Kumate! I would classify Days of Thunder as a sports movie, although it was gay (not that there is anything wrong with that) it was about car racing. Stroker Ace as well, I guess, although I don't even think that was BR's best car racing movie. Not trying to get into a debate about what is or isn't a sport, but jut my $0.02. I wouldn't include ancient sports in the list, so Gladiator, although a great movie, wouldn't make my list.
Men In Tights
Tournament Martial Arts Anything else? No curling movies! 875564 Would Gymkata count?
Tyler Rose
The original Rocky is also an all time classic......Rocky 2 I also enjoyed but refuse to recognize any Rocky film made after those two.
Chavez
Nope. Still Major League. Although I'm not familiar with Bang the Drum Slowly. Uecker should have won an Oscar. Easily the most quotable sports movie: 874132 Eh, Ueck aside (I'm a Brewers fan, so you know I love the guy), the movie is strictly B-list. And that's fine - it is what it is. And "most quotable" /= "greatest"; Hoosiers and Eight Men Out own ML (and Slap Shot as far as that goes) in the quality filmmaking department. Confusing quotability for quality is like putting Austin Powers and Napoleon Dynamite up for Best Picture Oscars.
LegFuJohnson
Being quotable was just a bonus. Hoosiers and Eight Men Out were easy, they were based on true stories.
Randall
Nope. Still Major League. Although I'm not familiar with Bang the Drum Slowly. Uecker should have won an Oscar. Easily the most quotable sports movie: "This guy leads the league in most offensive categories, including nose hair" "Juuuuuuuuust a bit outside" "Jesus, I like him very much, but he no help with curveball" "You trying to tell me Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?" Just a sampler... I think I need to go watch this again. 874132 I used to love listening to Ueker doing play by play on radio everyday. Hilarious. He used to do the TV play by play too until sometime in the 80's.

gilthorp
Awesome movies on this thread! I'll watch just about any movie that has a sports theme, or a movie that has something to do with music history, or a fictional band (hint-hint--nudge-nudge---Spinal Tap, anyone?). From a sports standpoint, one of my all time favorites from a classic sense is Chariots of Fire. Love the era it was set and the dual storylines coming into one--really a masterpiece of acting, score, etc. With that being said, Slapshot is one of my favorites and is one of those that will never be duplicated. Morris and his lines are by far the most memorable in that movie, but the ending is lame.

Because Hedwig and the Angry Inch is pretty awesome, if you don't mind a story about a failed-transsexual East German punk rock star, and Leningrad Cowboys Go America is sorta the Napoleon Dynamite of rock road-trip flicks. Tap is probably the king of the rock flicks, though. Undisputed.
Pitbull739
What, Brewsters Millions doesn't crack the list? I have always liked Bull Durham and Major League. Got to give marks to Slapshot and All the Right Moves for being filmed in pure Steeler country, Johnstown, PA.
theeohiostate
1. Hoosiers 2. The Natural 3. Caddyshack 4. Bad New Bears

Chargerz
FIELD OF DREAMS may not be the best baseball movie ever but certainly deserves to be on the list. I got a real sense of baseball history from watching it.
Joe Six Pack
I am not too sure if anyone suggested Kingpin, that movie was great
Pope Flick
Chariots of Fire. Still the only film NOT mentioned, and the only one that got Best Picture, excepting -of course- Rocky.

darin3
FYI, just participated in a related ESPN poll: What is the best baseball movie ever made? After over 44,000 votes, the breakdown is as follows: Field of Dreams: 32% Major League: 27% The Natural: 18% Bull Durham: 15% Bad News Bears: 7% Wow, '88 and '89 were great years for baseball movies (Major League, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams). Azazello1313
That list is massively backwards, IMO. 887667 that was exactly my thought. field of dreams sucks taint. bad news bears and bull durham are easily the cream of that crop. as far as sports movies generally, i really thought sea biscuit was a pretty good sports flick. hoosiers and rocky are definite classics, as is raging bull but for some reason i don't think of that primarily as a sports flick. slapshot, bull durham and bad news bears belong at the top as well. Azazello1313
best sports scene in a movie, IMO, is the angels/mariners one-game playoff scene from one of the naked gun flicks. that is great, great stuff.
LegFuJohnson
Forget sports scene. That's ANY scene. The first Naked Gun. Reggie Jackson to assassinate the queen. Fantastic.
lynch
1. Bull Durham You talk about good lines not a quotable though, "Well, I believe in the soul, the c*ck, the p*syy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days" 2. Hoosiers I am from Kentucky and basketball is god. 3. Field of Dreams I grew up on a farm and the idea of making a baseball field out of a farm appeal. 4. Remeber the Titans I am related to one of the actual players from T.C Williams High, had heard this story before there was a movie. 5. Major League These guys are still Sh*tty.
