rebdog
he's one player. the game goes on with or without him. the Packers aren't winning a SB anytime soon if he's there or not either. plus he's no longer even one of the best fantasy QBs. so tell me, please....why does this matter so much? Chavez
Before all this Favre crap, I really liked him, but now I ain't so sure...... 1456093 Favre's complicit in it, but is there really any reason that EVERYONE has to hang on his every utterance? rebdog is correct - barring some highly fortuitous circumstances (OL gels quickly; rookie/scrub FA WRs step up bigtime to complement Driver; Gado/Green/Davenport prove to be a terrific RBBC - or Gado proves good enough/Green/Davenport stay heathy; Woodson stays healthy; defense improves from last year), GB isn't going to the SB this season - maybe they will have an outside shot next year if Thompson is a good judge of talent - and Favre is now firmly ensconced in the 2nd tier of FF QBs. Favre has always played the media game well - he shows great candor, which reporters just eat up like nobody's business. The problem is now the offhand sort of comments he's always made are being breathlessly trumpeted from the tops of mountains and it's to some extent biting him in the ass by hurting public perception of him. Thompson and McCarthy seem to be committed to building a team for the long haul. Having Favre there is obviously a boon - he can still make the players around him better if not carry a team on his back for a whole season - but I don't think one player, even one who was once as great and still is pretty darn good as Favre, is going to affect their game plan as much as we think it is. Swiss Cheezhead
This post is a riddle inside of a conundrum topped off with a paradox. 1456261 Maybe, but it's true. My point is that the only people who seemed to be bothered by the whole thing are people who don't quite understand it. Of course, they don't realize that they don't understand it; if they did, they would probably realize that the reason they don't understand it is because they don't care enough about Favre's life (or the Packers) to gather the information necessary to form a valid opinion about it. That, of course, begs the question: if you don't care enough to make yourself familiar with the details, why does it bother you in the first place? I just don't think you and I (Packers fans) should have to explain WHY this isn't a big deal to all the shortsighted, instant-gratification, get-my-sports-in-a-dixie-cup people out there. Then again, I hate that those people make up a big part of the sports media's audience, which will ultimately have a big effect on Favre's legacy. There's no good resolution. Then again, I hate that those people make up a big part of the sports media's audience, which will ultimately have a big effect on Favre's legacy. 1456269 IMO Favre's presence or absence from the Packers IS a big deal; however, it's a binary resolution - he either will retire after next year, or he won't. And no one but Brett Favre can make that decision, so why worry about it? The two people whom it affects most are Thompson and McCarthy (well, Favre's family aside, but whether or not he plays won't directly lead to them getting canned; it's either more money on the pile or Brett hangin' around the house driving Deanna up a wall), and they seem to be essentially saying "we'd love to have you, but we're doing what we think is right for the ORGANIZATION in the long-term." Which I wholeheartedly agree with. As a fan, would I like to see Favre play? Yes, because I think he gives the team the best chance to win. But I can't do much about it, so I'll worry about things within my control - like scoring cheap tickets to games.
budlitebrad
Last time I checked, it was the media that kept asking him these questions. They're the people who hound him and make huge headlines out of his indecision every week. Don't get mad at Favre for something that the media is shoving down our throats. Packers | Favre to hold press conferenceFri, 5 May 2006 19:14:10 -0700 Internet Broadcasting Systems reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre announced he will hold a news conference in the Lambeau Field Media Auditorium after the team's morning practice Saturday, May 6. Swiss Cheezhead
FYI budlitebrad,Lord Favre made sure the press knew the where & the when that he would be holding Court. 1456414 There's a big difference between holding a press conference and making your own news story. You'd think the MEDIA, especially, would know the difference, but they were the ones accusing Brett of calling a press conference at his golf tournament "just to announce he hadn't made a decision," even though he has a presser every year to promote the tournament. Athletes get criticized for NOT being constantly available to the press; you can't possibly criticize Favre for letting the media know he's available for questions. Nobody TOLD the media what questions to ask, although I could have predicted all of them. Again, Favre is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn't. It's almost as if people just want Brett to be definitive -- one way or the other -- whether it's the truth or not. For some reason, indecision just IRKS them. Why? I have no idea. What if, tomorrow, Brett said, "This is my last year," and then said, after the season, "I changed my mind, I'm coming back"? I honestly believe THAT would make people feel better than if he just told the truth, which is "I can't predict the future, so I don't know what I'll be doing next year." P.S. "Lord Favre"? So...now the PFT critic is using PFT jargon???

Whether he plays or not IS a big deal to me, since I'm a fan of the team and a fan of Favre himself. However, one of the predominant philosophies of my life is what you stated above -- if you can't control it, don't let it bother you. It's wasting energy that could otherwise be spent on things you CAN control......like writing about football on internet message boards. Also, as a rational human being, I can understand that the decision to play pro football or retire IS something in Brett Favre's control. As such, HE is the one who will do most of the worrying about it (along with his family, teammates, bosses, etc.). Not me.
Randall
The 24 hour press needs stories or so they think. Yesterday Favre said he wouldn't talk about it anymore this year. I hope he sticks to that discipline and answers his future after the season.

Young will bust, Lendall White will suffer a serious infection from liposuction, McNair will light it up in Baltimore, Henry will test positive yet again, and the Brownie will get hurt, yet again. With Peter Sirmon starting at MLB, the D will be pathetic. Pac man will be in jail. Chow will wonder why he ever left the college ranks.
