DMD Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 There seems to be a consensus on those first four WR taken - Fitzgerald, Moss, Andre and Calvin Johnson in whatever order. But the next player taken really diverges. WRs are being taken like never before so you need to know who you want and probably get him early. Who do you take and why? Zooty Posted June 29, 2009 Share Posted June 29, 2009 Interesting question I also have Calvin behind most of these guys but I think Wayne is the easy call here. Like DMD said, Peyton's new BFF. I'm surprised there isn't more love for Smith who has put up great numbers with crap at QB 3rd for me is Jennings who could easily outproduce any of these guys. I just like the track record of Wayne & Smith more (in a redraft). White is easily 4th. One a team that runs 1st, added a hugh TE target and has a 2nd year QB. Love him as my #2. Brentastic Posted June 29, 2009 Share Posted June 29, 2009 This is a no-brainer if you ask me. The safest WR of the whole bunch (Moss, AJ, Fitz included) is Reggie Wayne. Both Wayne and Manning have yet to miss an NFL game due to injury, they have played together the longest of any of the other combos and Manning is one of the top 3 QBs in the leauge. What's not to like? I also think the fact that IND having a new OC and HC helps the Manning>Wayne combo because I suspect that Manning will have to improvise more, which means more Wayne. Calvin Johnson is a player that could end up #1 but he has a lot of risk from the team around him. Were it me, I would proably go with Jennings who I do rank 5th. Bronco Billy Posted June 29, 2009 Share Posted June 29, 2009 Wow. Tough choices. I'd do it by process of elimination. The first guy I'd throw out is Jennings, and not due to lack of talent. There are just so many options in the GB offense, and the younger guys like Jones, Nelson, and Finley are looking like guys who will be able to step right in this coming year and take some catches, along with Driver and Lee. Just too many different talented targets and I see Rodgers spreading the ball around. My next toss would be White. Ryan, while very talented, is still very early in his learning curve. I can see Atlanta still relying on the running game as their primary mode of attack, and then White having to share with Gonzo for his due. Again, no detraction on White, just that he may be a bit limited by the way ATL is going to attack. Plus, they may not be behind in a lot of games, meaning second half opportunities will be limited. As far as Wayne and Smith? I see Wayne as being the safer option - higher floor and lower ceiling - and he's going to get his being manning's WR1. Smith is just a terror for opposing Ds and double teaming only marginally counters him. I see him with the higher ceiling due to his magnificent talent, but with a lower floor being attached to Delhomme as opposed to Manning. Let your risk aversion/tolerance make the decision for you. DMD Posted June 29, 2009 Author Share Posted June 29, 2009 In a PPR league for the last four years, Wayne has placed 16 - 4 - 2 - 13. So his best season was when Harrison was almost entirely absent though Harrison had little role last year and Wayne was only 13th best. Have to wonder too if the addition of Donald Brown along with a healthy Addai won't let the Colts run better. But Wayne would likely still get his regardless. I like the solid, if unspectacular picks, the safer players, and that means one stands out from this group: Reggie Wayne. Yeah, it seems to me that a WR's production depends a lot on a QB's health; you can't argue against Peyton's year in and out consistency. I'm taking Wayne and Smith ahead of Calvin, in that order. Quality of team has to start playing a factor, and how you pass on the #1 Indy wideout for Detroit's is beyond me. He's not THAT good. Like I mentioned above, I think it only helps the tandem. If any QB can excel during a coaching turnover of this magnitude, it's Manning. Manning has had the same offensive philosophy his entire career at IND and will rely on the same plays when the going gets tough. This is the year Wayne is the undisputed #1, IMO. I see a scenario where they start off slow (with Manning attempting to run the new coaches plays) then Manning turning it loose by calling the shots himself.
