Puddy
Check back on Sunday afternoon. After today the Tigers have their attention. I'm pretty sure they had their attention going into this game. Tigers may not win the series, but please don't act like the only reason they kicked the crap out of NY tonight was because of the Yankees. Dr. Love
That was a great game! Let's go Tigers! That's about all I have to add to this particular discussion.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm jumping on the Tiger's bandwagon for the playoffs. Ernie Harwell was talking with the broadcast crew during the game, and he likened Rogers to Frank Tananna. I thought that was the single most insightful thing said the entire evening. It's fun watching him when he's on, outsmarting batters the whole night. Ursa Majoris
I'm not ashamed to say I'm jumping on the Tiger's bandwagon for the playoffs. With the wheels off and the Twins' bandwagon lying in an undignified heap on it's side, I haven't made up my mind whether to pull for Detroit or Oakland yet. Both teams have a good attitude and play interesting and scrappy baseball. I guess it would be kinda cool to have the World Series champs in the Twins division again next year. As for the Yankees.....

detlef
They represent everything WRONG in professional sports! First off, I never root for the yankees, so don't think this is coming from a fan. How exactly do they represent everything wrong in pro sports? From what I can tell, they embody professional sports. Certainly it's annoying to know that essentially every talented guy on a bad team has at least a 50/50 shot at being a yankee come trade deadline but are you suggesting that they stop spending? You know what's wrong with pro sports, owners who suck on the teet of shared revenues and refuse to put the money back into their team and give their fans something to root for. Once again, I despise the yankees and am fired up that Detroit is leading the series, but your comment is inane.

Not only do they pay mad jack to their players, they fork over a ton to the other teams as well. Apparently, it still makes sense for them despite the fact that they haven't won it all for several years. Why? How many hot chicks do you see walking around with pink A's caps on? They've managed to pull off something that nobody in any other sport has. They are America's team. They sell crazy amounts of apparel, etc. Apologies to Dallas fans, but no other team in any other sport can claim that. Frankly, I think anyone not from NY who pulls for the Yanks is a weenie, but that's not the Yankees problem. They say, thanks for your money, weenie, here's your cap. So, they represent EVERYTHING wrong with pro sports because they've managed to become a money making machine? They're a freaking PRO SPORTS FRANCHISE. Ask fans of perrenial losers like the Clippers, Cubs, etc. if they'd like to trade places. Oh the poor Cubs, if they didn't play in such a small market, maybe they'd have a chance. Oh, I forgot, they play in freaking Chicago and sell out like every single game! Nearly everybody who owns a franchise got that much money by kicking ass and taking names in some other business. Now I'm supposed to feel sorry for them because big bad George is out spending (and earning) them? What unfair advantage do the Yankees really have that they haven't created for themselves? Certainly if you go back far enough, they've got a ton of history, but who's fault is that? In all fairness, you should never go back more than 20 or so years because the majority of the fan base can't remember much further. In 86, the Mets were great and the Yankees were in the middle of some rather forgettable years. All the Yankees are guilty of is building some amazing, almost entirely homegrown teams by the mid 90's and parlaying that into a decade of unparalleled popularity. Meanwhile, the Mets have been hit and miss. Boo freaking hoo. As long as I get daily T.O. updates and the police blotter is constantly full of pro athletes (note the lack of yankee players names on that), I'm going to have a hard time being convinced that the Yankees represent EVERYTHING (or maybe anything) wrong with Pro sports. Who's basically the only guy of import caught up in the steroid deal to come clean, a Yankee. Oh, I should also add that they are #3 in ticket prices trailing both Boston and Chi Cubs, so they crush it in terms of delivering value to their fans both in titles won and how much they lay out in costs. Guest Cherni
While it WAS a very pivotal game in the series, I think Rogers' 1994 perfect game would have something to say about that. Rogers' perfect game in 94 was huge, however look at the lineup he was facing with their averages for the season. Most baseball people can agree that the current yankees lineup is the best lineup in the history of baseball considering averages, OB% and power. (excluding the 1800's). The Angels below don't hold a candle to the yankees, as IMO no one on the Angels would even start for the 2006 yankees. The perfect game was awesome but it was at the end of July. The game last night was the first home playoff game in 19 years in Detroit, in October. This wasn't a lazy summer ballgame, this was intense in 40 degree weather against the yankees. My vote would go to last night in a landslide, so much on the line, against the best offensive team ever assembled. Just my .02. Chad Curtis .254 Spike Owen .310 Chili Davis .311 Bo Jackson .279 J.T. Snow .220 Rex Hudler .298 Chris Turner .242 Gary DiSarcina .260 Andrew Lorraine, Russ Springer - pitchers.

Edit: And also, I didn't say that last night's game WASN'T incredible. It most certainly was. I merely said that his perfect game "would have something to say about" the fact that DS said it was the "game of his life". Meaning that the perfect game beared mentioning, that's all. They play by the rules, and hidden in that 221% is the "luxury tax" they pay out to other teams. They, in effect, pay a % of the Royals payroll for instance so they can play them and beat them X times per year. I love the game, but MLB is being poorly run: team salary discrpencies and the steroids issue are NOT the fault of either the Yankees or Barry Bonds, but Bud Selig and his cronies.
