Vegas makes me sad

Just got back from a weekend in Vegas and I'm not sure I'd ever go back. Major disappointment. I said that the last time I was there too, but this was for a wedding.

I've been there around 10-12 times now. Ten years ago, I could go to Vegas as a single guy and spend about $300 and have a super good time. Did that sort of trip a couple times a year for a while there. Impossible now.

Vegas is:

A. WAY too high rent now. Everything new that gets built is for people with stupid money. All gaming tables and hotel rooms and hooke.. err.. I mean entertainment is just plain robbery.

B. Class challenged. Don't get me wrong, there has always been a truly excellent layer of cheese over the clientele, but I have always dressed up for a night at the casinos and even the scariest Vegas element used to put on a shirt with a collar. Now? Sweats and pants falling off your backside are acceptable at a $25 Craps table in Caesars. It's all wannabe Vegas gangstas and Nascar fans. (Especially this weekend with the race going on.. sweet jesus you should have seen it).

C. A second hand smoke nightmare. This has always been the case. But, now that I don't smoke anymore, it's just vile.

D. DRY. Every night (especially after a few cocktails) I wake up in the night with sand paper for a tongue and cracked lips. You know what I'm talking about.

E. Clearly, not for a lame father of two like me. Duh. Not for kids and really not very friendly to kids. Note: This was my first (and last) trip with two kids.

Wow, that turned into a pretty good ole rant. For the record, dealers at Bellagio are not interested in whether you're having a good time at the $10 BJ table, and getting into the Ballys casino STILL takes forever!

Down about $100 on the weekend, so that's about the only thing I can't complain too much about.

Those days are long gone.

Personally, I have a blast in Vegas but I go there with the mindset that I'm going to spend a hefty amount of coin.

What you gotta do is kick it old school at the El Cortez. It ain't the best bang for your buck, but you'll bet banged and it won't cost many bucks. . .

What? You get a free hooker with each room?

I was pretty underwhelmed by my first and (likely) only trip to Vegas. If I went back it'd have to be rolling with someone who had connections. Though, I've got some serious Vegas clients now. But who knows what, if any, kind of hook up that might get me. But I don't gamble much, and chasing tail ain't on the menu.

I grew up playing poker but have never been to Vegas. I am under 2 hours from AC... but my odds are better playing with my friends.

How much to huddlers drop in Vegas above their hotel costs. Try to work it per person if you are taking a lady friend. Just curious.

I probably spent $500-$700 a day, plus whatever winnings I took in. Cab fare and $20 vodka redbulls add up real quick.

Above Hotel and flight costs - I probably spent a little over $1500 this past WCOFF. Thurs-Sat

Mind you, that includes a $350 bottle of vodka and then a six pack of Red Bull for $50.

I can honestly tell you that if I did not take my wife with me when I go, (I have been there four times without her), I never come home more than a few hundred in the hole. That is four a three day trip with lots of Black Jack and maybe a little poker mixed in.

Now when I have my wife with me it is a different story as we spend more on shows and food plus she is a machine player which really means she is a Vegas donator. In at least 15 trips with her I would say that the most I came back in the hole was about 18 hundred and I was not happy with that. I mean I was willing to accept that but on that trip I was also a loser so that bill got racked up. Most of the time we come back a few hundred shy of what we started with and I am very happy with that. My wife plays slots for hours and hours. I play black jack on average about six hours a day. Having said that, there have been plenty of times that I came home with more money in my pocket than I went with. My most recent trip with Rocknrobn had me come home with a little more money then I started off with.

I would not go there without at least a 1K per person bankroll.

140 in cab fare on this last trip and I don't even remember us going anywhere.

:D

The trek out to the WCOFF location this past year was brutal. It was about $40 maybe more one way. I split it with Jedi heading out there on Friday but paid full fare on my way back.

sucks to hear all of this as I had a buddy who lived right in town for around 5 years... he kept on trying to get me to visit and I never took advantage of the oppertunity...

no taxi. no hotel. cats who know every trick in town.

as big of a poker player as I am - I was most excited to see the desert... I've never been further west than Ohio (visit to Steel Bunz)

what ever happened to Jules anyway?

Been there twice now and am still overwhelmed and lost there.

Vegas is:

A. WAY too high rent now. Everything new that gets built is for people with stupid money. All gaming tables and hotel rooms and hooke.. err.. I mean entertainment is just plain robbery. Still cheaper than Disney World

B. Class challenged. Don't get me wrong, there has always been a truly excellent layer of cheese over the clientele, but I have always dressed up for a night at the casinos and even the scariest Vegas element used to put on a shirt with a collar. (Especially this weekend with the race going on.. sweet jesus you should have seen it). AGREE! I'm not a suit person, but Vegas no longer has evening class!

C. A second hand smoke nightmare. This has always been the case. But, now that I don't smoke anymore, it's just vile. Some casinos are better than others here.

D. DRY. Every night (especially after a few cocktails) I wake up in the night with sand paper for a tongue and cracked lips. You know what I'm talking about. Desert???!!!??? Add a bloody nose!

E. Clearly, not for a lame father of two like me. Duh. Not for kids and really not very friendly to kids. Note: This was my first (and last) trip with two kids. I never liked the "Kid Movement in Vegas, though I took my then 16 yo daughter, but had a back escape to the pool for her then. Kids don't need to see dad losing $$$$! So NOD!

Wow, that turned into a pretty good ole rant. For the record, dealers at Bellagio are not interested in whether you're having a good time at the $10 BJ table, and getting into the Ballys casino STILL takes forever! The Bellagio, Caesar's, have arrogant "old school dealers. F' them. Bill's (formerly Barbary Coast and Harrah's are just ignorant a-holes/rookies, f' them also. Go to the Flamingo, best dealers and pit people you'll ever find! Ask for Gil, Terri, or Claudeen. Can't go wrong.

Down about $100 on the weekend, so that's about the only thing I can't complain too much about.

That's where I luck out, Skip! My wife shops mostly. She'll play the "Larry-the-lobster" game until she loses more than $20! :D Then she SHOPS!!!! This year she got hooked on the pearl thingee. Not sure what that cost, but I don't want to know. In the summer months she does the pool more. No pools in Feb.! More time for her to buy Chit! :D Still not a problem, as she allows me to go w/ or w/o her anytime I want! I love her!

1K/trip or $300/ day is a decent bankroll, but craps can double that. I've been to Vegas at least 10 times as a single (more than 40 overall). Most on the College's dime, but at least 4 times on my dime.

Sturphy, (check above for specific replies)

You wanna talk about change????? I've been going there since 1975. $2 bets were the standard, less off the strip. In those days the population was 250K, TOPS. You could cruise the strip in no time. FF to the 80's. Last time I rented a car there was 1985. You could still cruise the strip fairly well, but the pop density was making it worse. Today.... At 1.5m+ , take cabs! It's much more economical than a renter and no DUI worries!

I have a love/hate w/ Vegas. Though I have never been to AC, all I have ever heard is it doesn't come close to Vegas. My biggest gripe is the comps. Been there in another thread so I won't repeat. So why do i like Vegas????? Because:

It's the most unique town in the freakin' world!!!

JMHO!

Last went there in 2000 for a hugh computer show with a buddy and we blew out a ton of cash on booze and strippers, seeing the sun come up several times. Took me months to repair the CC damage but had a blast. Probably won't bother again.

The main downer I've noticed over the years is that as Vegas has grown, so has my feeling of being immersed in a big city where nobody who works there really cares about customer service. It's more and more obvious that it's all about them making money.
