Cast Set for Next 'Star Trek' Movie?

_____________________________________________________________________

On the heels of Paramount's confirmation that J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Lost) had been selected to direct the next Star Trek feature, reports began circulating on several movie and sci-fi websites Monday that the studio was in talks with Matt Damon, Adrien Brody, and Gary Sinise to play the roles of Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy respectively. First reported by IGN Movies, a unit of Fox Interactive, and attributed to unnamed studio sources, the stories also indicated that James McAvoy, who costarred in The Last King of Scotland, was "in the mix" to play the role of Enterprise engineer Scotty.

similar to superman, they need to find a new face for kirk. unlike superman, they hopefully will come up with a decent story, acting, and some respect for the legacy of the subject matter.

Hey - how is Spock at the Academy as the same time as Kirk if he's already serving on the Enterprise with Capt Pike?

:D

I like the Sinise choice.

He was an upper classman while Kirk was a fish?

"We fear change" comes to mind. Give this a chance to pan out and see what happens. People probably said the same thing before The Next Generation came out. That said, I would prefer a bunch of no-names in the movie as many of these actors have an image already attached to them.

I think there's been fiction actually that explains maybe Spock was an instructor?

To put the :D back on, keep in mind vulcans live MUCH longer than humans and the implication was that Spock was at least 10 years older than Kirk. Tho I could be wrong....

I like ... all those actors, but this... could be ... a ... disaster.

Agree. Another misguided decision from the studio suits who just don't understand the Trek franchise or its fans. :D:D

somewhat dated info from trekweb that may shed some light ... spock was indeed with pike and during that time, kirk was probably working his way up to captain somewhere else.

Dept: General Star Trek

The Seattle Times speaks with STAR TREK film producer Harve Bennett about his career with the franchise in a new interview today. The 73-year old producer reflects on making WRATH OF KHAN and additional TOS movies and says he thinks an idea once bandied about could help save the franchise today: THE ACADEMY YEARS.

"It was Kirk and Spock at Star Fleet Academy," Bennett says. "They're both 17. Spock is the first Vulcan to attend the academy. It was a story of prejudice against Spock, who almost dies in it. It's the story of Kirk's first and last love, with a cadet lady who dies heroically saving the planet or something similar."

Bennett says the whole idea had an important underlying theme.

"Its undertone is about racism," he explains. "It's about redbloods vs. bluebloods vs. greenbloods. And at the end Kirk is alone. He and Spock part, and you understand why Kirk is going to run around the galaxy chasing illusions and skirts."

Bennett says this idea was passed on by Paramount as recently as 2001, when they opted to go with Rick Berman and Brannon Braga's premise for ENTERPRISE instead.

uber-geeks have been discussing this for about a year now here ...

this dude thinks he has the data:

"Spock was born in 2330. He enrolled in Starfleet in 2349(at 19).

Kirk was born in 2333. He enrolled in Stafleet in 2350(at 17).

Spock graduated around 2350-2351. Although no one knows for sure when. By 2352 he was serving on the Enterprise. This is probably when Pike took over.

Kirk served on the Republic in the early 2350's. And then the Farragut in 2354 and he may have served on other ships before becoming the Captain of the Enterprise in 2364.

Also there were quotes in Where No Man has Gone Before that indicated that Mitchell, Kirk, and Spock all knew each other in the academy."
