Why do they hate us?

It's been three years and a day since al Qaeda's pre-election attack on a Madrid train station, in which 191 people were murdered. The Los Angeles Times has a follow-up report, which includes this:

Spanish officials and experts say the country is potentially in more danger now than ever before as extremist groups reorganize just beyond Spain's southern coast.

As the trial began here last month, more arrests and prosecutions were announced, and senior officials say radicals in Morocco and other parts of northern Africa, many with ties to Spain, increasingly take their cues from Al Qaeda. . . .

Maghreb-based networks remain the most serious threat to Spain in terms of Islamic extremism, law enforcement officials said this week. They said militants had begun to set up a centralized command and a string of training camps in southern Algeria and northern Mali, and have launched recruiting efforts targeting their brethren who live in Spain.

"We are seeing the Al Qaeda-ization of the Maghreb militants, and that is the evolution that most worries us," a senior counter-terrorism official in the Spanish Interior Ministry said in an interview.

But wait! Didn't Spain respond to the 3/11 attack by electing a Socialist government that quickly cut and ran from Iraq? Sí, they did! Why in the world would al Qaeda still hate the Spanish then?

:D At the lack of response to this H8!

It reminds me of a favorite line from the movie "Monsters Inc."

"Your stunned silence is very reassuring!"

They don't get "it". Never will! It is a plesent place to dwell, drinking whine and eating cheese while scoffing at the savages. :D

Perhaps because it's perpetuating an old Republican talking point that is devoid of facts. The Spanish government was ACTUALLY booted out by the people because it went out of it's way to try to point the finger at domestic terrorists (ETA) instead of Al-Qaeda after the Madrid attack.

Nice to see Dumb and Dumber back at the tailgate :D

I don't know, but I'm not sure I remember the socialist platform of "if we get out of Iraq there will never be terrorism again" platform.

Did the socialist run on a platform which included exiting IRAQ or not?

Did they win?

Does Al queda still want to kill them?

It is amazing to me how you people can be so naive.

Your claims of the old gov't blaming it on ETA may or may not be true, you can't tell, but it has nothing to do with Iraq, al quada and thier hatred of spain.

Ah, I see you are going with the old "3 YESes" form of arguing, wherein you get your interlocutor to respond in the affirmative 3 times, even if your questions are disparate, unrelated, and besides the point. That may get you on the debating team in Oklahoma, but that's pretty weak chit at thehuddle.

When you get in your blathering mode with this nonsensical rhetoric, you sound like that masturbating dog looks in that video spain posted over the weekend, spewing out your Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage/Chicken Little lines.

Despite you guys ganging up on the token conservative, H8 is making a valid point here. Those opposed to the action in Iraq claim that our presence there has provoked the radicals and has made us less safe, instead of slowing the spread of terrorism. Using that logic, Spain's decision to leave Iraq should have bought them some political capital with Islam. The apparent reality is that the religious zealots don't keep score regarding who opposes them or who opposes their enemies. If you are "infidel" you will eventually be targeted, regardless of your political bent.

It is this high-brow intellectual type of response that has been keeping me out of the Tailgate. I just can't respond to such solid argumentation.

On topic, clear and irrefutable! :D

There are ways and means of eradicating terrorism as far as it practically can be done. Don't fool yourself that it will ever be gone totally, it won't. We can do a whole heck of a better job in how we tackle it, is all I'm sayin'.
