Czarina
Should I replace them all with men who actually sit at their desk and work instead of gossip all the time? They'd be sitting at their desks looking at porn and chatting on the huddle. So it's not like you'd be gaining any productivity.
Dr. Love
Should I replace them all with men who actually sit at their desk and work instead of gossip all the time? The company I work for is dominated by men in many sectors (engineering, research, production). Many of my customers are mostly men, as well. There's usually a smattering of females in these settings, and I've found that they're nearly all completely professional and great to be around. However, there's a magic number of allowable women in a workgroup. All it takes is five or six women (enough to form a clique), and there's drama. In my old job, there were nearly two hundred people in my building. I'd say it was about 85/15 men overall, but about 95/5 in the professional ranks. In general, the professional women were just that, but there was usually only one or maybe two women in a workgroup of 15-20. However, the secretaries, all women (about seven of them), could not get along with each other. Ever. The entire pool of secretaries turned over probably three or four times in the nine years I was there, and I can't think of a single harmonious group. I've also seen that on the professional side, if a group went from two to four or five women, usually some cattiness would develop. The addition of one other woman to a group would make a respected, PhD. chemist turn into a 14-year-old drama queen. I've never understood it. I work in high tech and the bulk of the engineering staff is predominantly men. There are some female engineers that are highly competent and add diversity without drama. There is one exception that will cry at least once a week and isn’t competent, but then you have the stereotypical engineering geeks that are odd ducks. The admins are predominantly female, and this is where the gossip/drama mostly comes from. I think it has more to do with the job title than gender. The Holy Roller
In our building we have 6 male teachers and 21 females. It's mind boggling sometimes. I usually tell the kids that Miss/Mrs/Ms So-And-So is pretty cranky today so don't fart around in their class. They tell me it's like going to school in a minefield. Someone is always "raggy". I try not to smile. And the worst fight I've broken up was between two female students who after lunch completely got it on with their fists, lunch trays, hair pulling, knee to the chest, screaming, foaming, and blood-curdling rebel yells. Yep. It was over a 7th grade boy. To answer your question, I'd have them go out back to the parking lot and settle it like women. Yes, but they wouldn't be backbiting all the time - same productivity but fewer headaches and drama.
JoJoTheWebToedBoy
Depends. I have 2 questions 1. Are they Hot? 2. Did they strip down to their undies and were pillows involved? If the answers are yes, then you have the greatest job in the world. Seriously, At one time my entire group were women and it did get interesting at times. You need to sit them down and explain to them if it continues someone will have to find a new job.

The admins are predominantly female, and this is where the gossip/drama mostly comes from. I think it has more to do with the job title than gender. That's what I thought at first, too. However, I've seen several instances where the claws come out with professional women, too, especially in a field that has many other women (teaching, nursing, etc.). It also happens in a woman in a professional field that doesn't typically have a lot of women (engineering is a good example) all of a sudden has one or more additional women added her immediate workgroup. It's worst if the additional women are hot (or at least hotter than the original). As you suggest, I think that there is a socioeconomic factor, too. It always seems like those in the lower classes have WAY more drama in their lives in general (both genders).
Hugh B Tool
To quote my favorite poet : "The female of the species is more deadly than the male" In most all cases this is true. Insects, animals etc. Ask a police officer; always cuff the female, always.

These days you can't comment on a female coworkers perfume without walking a thin line. Telling them their Midol dose has to change or else is teetering on a cliff. Always have another manager/worker present when talking to or about female workers. Cover ass or lose it.
JoJoTheWebToedBoy
A loooooooooooong time. When Sky looks over his shoulder, that's me he sees And as long as you document the problem, and counsel them on their inappropriate workplace behaviour (and yes it helps to have someone from HR review your plan and be in the room with you) you will have no problems. But if they are hot and pillow fighting in their undies just thank your lucky stars and quit complaining Edited May 19, 2007 by JoJoTheWebToedBoy
