Missoula Griz
I have a family reunion at the Hiawatha resort at Leach Lake starting this Wednesday night thru Sunday. Anyone do any fishing up there? Anything fun to do with kids ages 11 and 7? Not looking forward to the 17 hour drive there.

SeductiveNun
Not too familiar with that area, but your not that far from Walker, Grand Rapids, or Bemidji, bepending on if you can get away for a few hours with the family. Things around Walker I also recall there's a petting zoo on the way to Bemidji that the kids could enjoy. Stuff to do around Bemidji As for Grand Rapids, there's the Judy Garland museum, stock car races on Saturday. More stuff in Grand Rapids I haven't fished around Grand Rapids for a long time, but the fishing reports I've read say it's still going well. Should be some pretty good walleye fishing still going on, and if you like northern you'll get plenty of those too. I'm sure there are plenty of places to get panfish if you're thinking of more kid oriented fishing, but you could get better info from someone at the resort than from me. Unless you head up to my lake, which is too much of a drive from where you'll be staying. Wish I could be more help, but like I said, I don't know that area too well, and I haven't lived near there in years.
Seattle LawDawg
Will you have access to a boat? Leach lake isn't bad for walleye and pike. Of course, you can always fish for burbot (eelpout)
BillyBalata
Luckily for you, Leech Lake is in the northern half of the state. Don't come south, it's underwater. I've only been in that area once... as a kid, but I remember going to Lake Itasca/Itasca State Park. It's where the headwaters of the Mississippi River are, kind of cool as a kid, you could walk across the Mississippi River. . I think they still have the statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox somewhere in that area, and you can talk to the Paul Bunyan statue and it talks back I know there's gotta be a casino close by... Moss6
well, look on the bright side. at least it's not winter. I brought some cousins from down south Ice fishing a long time ago. For one of them it was the first time they have seen real snow They were tiptoeing across the ice thinking they were going to fall through – had to be 16” thick and 5 below, but the ice was making noise They only come back in the summer now
Seattle LawDawg
Muskie This is what Leech lake is known for. Or This I will just miss ya - Heading up to Ely area on Sunday I believe there was a PWT (pro walleye tour) event there a couple years ago, unless there's another leach lake. From what I can remember hearing, watch your gear...a lot of stuff mysteriously disappeared.

Missoula Griz
Yes they are fun to catch and i told yah the jacks were a bitting well Nice fish! Definately different from the fishing I do here in Montana. Mostly fly rod trout fishing on streams. The Muskies would not hit the lure on the fly. They would follow it toward the boat. They would just appear from nowhere. It stunned me to see such a large fish 3 feet away from me. At that point, you have to 'romance' the muskie. Very strange. I would continue to swirl my lure around the boat as he pursued it. I would keep it right above his head since his eyes are on top. The first few times I tried this they would be spooked and head back down. It took me a while to get the trick down. I tried to explain it to other people at the resort. They were clueless. In fact, only one person from Minnesota even new what I was talking about. I was surprised by how few people fish for Muskies even though they were from the area. darin3
So I'm sitting at the Minneapolis airport, and I'm confused. Where are all the Vikings and polar bears? And it's funny, I didn't see any igloos when I was landing.
