Rounders....is it worth watchin?

Easily the best poker movie ever made. However, the bar is pretty low.

I think it's one of Edward Norton's finest roles. He's subtly fantastic in this film.

Also, pay very close attention to the scene when Damon and Martin Landau chat in the bar. It's a well written dialogue on Determinism vs. Freewill. I didn't realize how poignant it was the first few times through, being wrapped up in all the gambling.

I love me some Edward Norton--he's cute in a dorky way. I like dorks

my favorite EN roles:

American History X

25th Hour

The Painted Veil

Definitely enjoyed American History X, Rounders, and Fight Club. I also thought he was excellent in Primal Fear, and enjoyed Red Dragon and The Illusionist as well. I'd have to say that Ed Norton is on my short list of favorite actors. :D

The Secret Life of Bees

I've had this one sitting at my house from Netflix for quite some time. My wife put it on the list, and I just wasn't that excited to watch it. We finally watched it last night, and I'm glad that she put it on the list. It is definitely not the typical guy movie, as it isn't a comedy and there isn't any action, but, I'm a bit of a sap, so, I can admit that I can enjoy a well done emotional movie. This was definitely a very good heartfelt movie that really drummed up a lot of emotion. It is mainly about people and the desire to be loved. It also is set in the days of the civil rights movement, so, there was a peak into that world and the racism that played such a hugh part of everyone's lives. All in all, I recommend this movie, as it tugged at my heart strings a few times. The only negative I have is that there were some areas of the movie that did get a bit boring, as they were setting up the story. This keeps it from being ranked a bit higher.

Slumdog Millionaire

Movies don't get more hyped than this one was for me. All of those awards, all of the recommendations from critics and friends, and the phenomenal 8.6 it has on IMDB (46th all-time). So, based on hype, I was expecting a 10.0 level movie. For me, it didn't quite reach those lofty levels, but, it came darn close. What a great movie this was. It had the love story throughout, but, it also had many laughs and clever lines, which I was a bit surprised by. The acting was also great, especially from the young Indian kids. This was a terrific cast of people I've never seen before. However, what really made this movie great was the manner in which the story was told. Each question on the gameshow was followed by an explanation of how he got the answer. This was of telling the story broke up the plot well and kept the story seeming fresh as it moved along. This was a phenomenally well written script and a great movie.

I would give that movie a 1 At most. It relegated all fathers to being either completely absent, buffoons or wife beaters. There were no male roles in the entire movie that were positive other than the one younger guy who was of course beaten by the adults. It celebrated women and demonized all men. I just thought it was not only a chick flick but one with the main premise that men are evil.

And stupid evidently since her father supposedly looked for her for the many months she was gone and then just turns away when he finds her? What the hell is that? If it was my kid, I would get them and no one in that house would stop me.

I just found it to be the least entertaining movie I had seen in years and yet most unrealistic and insulting.

two thumbs down. 0. Trash. Le Garbage. Surprised it did not win more awards since

it was basically bashing all white males - every one of them.

Wow, those are some strong opinions. I personally think that the depiction of white/black relations in the south immediately after the civil rights movement was probably, sadly, pretty accurate.

So, for the men in the movie, you had 3 prominent characters: the father, who was a completely douchebag from beginning until the very end where he finally did the right thing, the guy who kept asking the girl to marry him, and the young kid. You act like it depicted several fathers as absent, buffoons, or wife beaters. There was only one father portrayed. As for the guy who hit the black women and the guys who beat on the young black kid, sorry, I think that happened a lot during that time, and was pretty accurate.

You know what they say about opinions, like something else, we've all got one, and think other people's stink.

There undoubtedly were cases of poor relations in the south and they made certain to focus solely on those. The ONLY father in the entire movie was the wife beater. Apparently no one else there had a father because there were none others and there was never even so much as a mention of a father. I found the movie to hit the cheap emotional buttons and play to some "politically motivated" audience that wants to think that ALL white men in that era were wife beaters and racists looking to do whatever they could to hold down all others. That fathers not only had a negative role but were completely unneccessary. I am not saying every thing in the movie did not exist, they CHOOSE to ONLY depict white males as demons. My biggest problem though was that I was offended by the movie as a father and the message that the movie made very clear - fathers are ALL bad and are completely unneccessary for happiness. The movie reminded me of something a freshman at an all-girls college would write and get an "A" from her feminist teacher for hitting all the right buttons. I thought it was just a total BS movie that was poorly written and yet predictably heralded as some accomplishment to satisfy a popular Hollywood agenda. Not that I cared one way or the other about the movie.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

I love Kevin Smith movies, and I have loved the Apatow & crew movies. This combined actors from previous Kevin Smith movies, with some that have appeared in the Apatow flicks (though I don't think Apatow had anything to do with this one). With a title of "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and a cast included Seth Rogan, Jason Mewes, and Traci Lordes, I was expecting a movie full of toilet humor and hilarious vulgarity. The movie did have some of that, but, they could have called this movie "Kevin Smith Makes a Hysterical Romantic Comedy". This movie had heart and turned out to be a very love story. Don't get me wrong, it had a ton of laughs too. Throw in the fact that it was set in Monroeville & Pittsburgh, and showed Iron City beer being consumed, and had a hilarious scene with a Steeler fan, who mentioned Roethlsiberger, and had several nods to the Penguins just added to the fun for me. I absolutely loved this movie. It was extremely funny, romantic, and had a lot of heart. This will be a movie purchase for me, as I'll watch it when I need a laugh. Great movie.

Marley & Me

Well, I haven't cried this much while watching a movie since "Old Yeller", and that was when I was a young boy. I"m now 34, and this movie didn't just have tears coming down my face, but, I had a lump in my throat, as I fought off more tears. It was well worth it though, as this was a great movie. I could relate to so much of the story. Not only the dog relationship, but, the wife relationship and the dealing with kids, work, etc. If you are a dog lover, like I am, you will adore this charming and thoughtful movie. It really showed how great a dog can be in your life, and how painful it can be as well. Just like losing anything you love, losing a dog is hard. Like the movie shows, a dog is just their to love their owners no matter what. They don't care if you are rich or poor, what you look like, how successful you are, etc., they only care that you love them. It's too bad more people didn't have those traits. Not to get overly sappy, but, I think dogs are gifts from God and one of my favorite things in this world. This movie obviously hit home for me, and I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite movies in quite some time.

Just saw the movie tonight. Still not over it. Exceptional movie. I'll never watch it again though. Every married-parent-dog owner will relate to this movie. Absolute heart-breaker.

Role Models

I went into this one with high expectations. I find both Sean William Scott & Paul Rudd to be pretty damn funny, and it looked like there were some bit actors from the Apatow movies involved, including McLovin. The previews looked pretty funny and it had a solid 7.3 on IMDB. Well, I came away disappointed, as it wasn't anywhere near the level of Superbad, Zack & Miri, or Knocked Up, not even in the same league. It had a few laughs and was mildly entertaining, but, it just never won me over. Not a bad movie by any means, but, not nearly as good as I had anticipated.

I enjoyed the movie a little more - maybe an 8.0 - because there were some funny lines in it - particularly by the foul mouthed kid that Scott had. Plus his Ford Bronco was a classic too. It was an okay movie rental but probably not a great full priced movie. The one-liners was the redeeming quality of the movie to me.

Saw the movie tonight. I give it an 8.5. I thought it was great. Some great one liners, hawt chicks, and the gratuitous tittay shot. Pretty much everything I expect in a good movie.
