I think I'm going to like these....

Over the years, I've changed drivers every couple years, putters come and go, along with my fairway woods. One constant though is I've always loved my irons and have been stubborn to give up those old King Cobras. Until a couple weeks ago when I demoed some new irons, got fitted that day and they arrived this week.

My new weapons

Played in a couple scrambles Thursday and Friday and was hitting them pretty good right out of the gate. Saturday was time to put them to test playing just my own ball. Played the front nine in 2 over par….38. Unfortunately I started the back 9 with a triple and a double bogey on the first two holes. Was able to settle down and go two over the rest of the way. 5 over on those two holes, 4 over on the other 16….38+42=80. Due to some injuries and a just plain old failing body….it's been the rare occurrence breaking 85 let alone getting it down to 80 the last few years.

Went out again today….missed a 3 foot slider for birdie on the 4th hole. Made up for it by sticking my 2nd shot a couple inches short of going in on the next hole, tap in bird. 3 putted the 9th hole :D , but finished with another 38. :D The back nine went much better today. Made it thru the first two holes bogey, par. Back to back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, with 15 almost bringing me the first hole-in-one of my life, with the ball curling away just before the hole, about 6 inches away  Tap in birdie.

Todays round….38+36=74 :D

I think I'm going to like these new irons :D

I don't know much about these irons but the G10 drivers have been getting rave reviews. It's amazing how far irons have come in the last 10 years. I just sold my Titleist 990s and picked up a set of Titleist 755s. Much more forgiving and I can still work the ball just as well. Hopefully the honeymoon continues for you.

Nice round, Billay. Golf is trying to suck me back in. I quit playing over 10 years ago...just couldn't handle the 6 hour rounds anymore. We had an all-expenses paid company golf outing up in Reston National about 2 weeks ago and I've been kinda wanting to get out there and hack it around a bit. I realized my old (thanks to John Daly) Firesticks are woe-fully outdated however. A guy I played with rented clubs. He had some crappy shoes from spammers irons that made mine look like babies. Golf clubs have gotten like pick-up trucks. Bigger and bigger.

My "dealer" gave me the G10 driver to try last year a couple weeks before he put them out on display. Didn't take me more then a day to go back and pay for that baby.

Seeing as how I really liked my Cobra irons, I had full intentions of going with the new Cobra S9's. He gave me a demo 6 iron to try and also said I had to take the G10 demo club as well. Took me all of about 10-15 mins hitting both out on the course to say, screw these Cobras. Gimme the Pings!

Actually it was the S9s I just bought not SPs. I was looking at the FP's and S9's and combined the two by accident. I actually liked the crappy shoes from spammers Slingshot 4Ds a little better, but more deals available for the S9s on Ebay.

I haven't found anything I like more than my old Tommy Armour 845's. Love those Irons.

dat is what I play - have for 10 years or so, and like BB - I am not too excited about getting new irons and going thru the adjusment phase and getting comfortable with a new set. that being said

after hitting a couple buddies new Callaway irons, as well as the Pings, I think new irons are on the horizon........

BB - incredible round- that is a hugh-mongous leap to go frim mid 80's to 74 - sounds like the new foot wedge is working out.......

well....I did have a plate and 10 screws put in my foot a little over a year ago.....so there is probably as much titanium in my foot as there is in my driver.

Good luck with the Pings! I have never had good luck with their clubs. Callaway, crappy shoes from spammers, Cobra, and Adams (woods) have always treated me well.

I am not sporting a handicap and am not playing right now because of a hand injury. I will be starting to keep a Handicap this season or next, and right now I would say it would be about a 23. And dropping since I am actually playing more often.

In my bag currently:

Stiff shafts all.

Adams Insight BUL 12.5º driver. Love this club. It's among my favorite to hit. When others reach for the 3 wood, I pull out the driver.

Callaway H-Hot Oversized 3 wood. I don't love this club. I have not adjusted as well to it as I thought I would. I am working on it.

Callaway FT-Hybrid 3 Draw and 4 Draw. Both were bought used. I don't really need the draw as I have found, but I don't think it hampers me.

crappy shoes from spammers Slingshot OSS 5-A Irons. I really hit these well. But they will probably need to go is the handicap continues to steadily decline. They are like little shovels.

Callaway Fusion Wide-sole sand wedge. Heavy, and it does the job getting me out of the bunker most of the time.

Solus 61º Lob wedge. New (used) club. Not sure how much I will like it, but I definitely liked the way it sat at address.

Scotty Cameron Futura Phantom II Mallet Putter (Thanks HughB.) Love this putter. Just bought a reserve on Craigslist in case something happens to my baby.

I really hodge-podged this bag together over the last 4 years Everything was bought separately and mostly used or off ebay. When the time comes to buy new clubs in a couple of years, I will go and get fitted. It's time, especially since I am now playing early AM most days before work. Whatever clubs I choose, I think I might try to stick with one MFR from 3W to gap wedge, and whatever comes in between. Maybe for driver as well....if I decide to change. Did I mention how I love my driver?

First, congrats on the killer round.

Now for the clubs. I am still very much in love with my Cleveland TA7's. I think I am on my fourth year with these irons. Maybe it is the fifth and honestly I can't see myself getting out of these any time soon. It is funny how we fall in and out of love with certain clubs. If you did a search of these forums you would find me pounding my chest over the HiBore rescue club that I bought. This is a 2 iron replacement that I can fly about 225 and land pretty nice. At one time I loved the chance to hit that club. Now I seem to hit lots of hooks with that club so I am extra cautious when I pull it out. I almost never hit it off the tee where in years past I would search for the holes that gave me the chance to use that club off the tee. This game can make you crazy sometimes.

Scores of mine over the past week.

Wednesday after work - 84 (way tired and swinging easy, scores just kept getting better and better)

Thursday on a really short course - 86 (could not make a putt to save my life)

Saturday at my work yearly outting - 78 (short game was off the hook)

Sunday with my normal foursome - 83 (lots of hooks)

The 78 was a low as I have been in a few years. I shot a 76 a few summers ago and maybe two other times I have broke 80 since then but my game was totally clicking on that Saturday. Those days are just to few and far between.

Sounds like golf clubs are a lot like Little League baseball bats. You can work on your swing, take lessons, practice, practice practice, and then go out and buy new equipment for $$$$$$$ and only then does your game improve.

I've been playing Titleist 990s for quite a few years now. I've tried a few other sets in there but nothing compared. I'll be trying the Titleist irons this summer and may switch but it would have to be a pretty big improvement.

Its about time for a driver change though. I've been playing a 975 for quite a few years (although a couple TM Burners have made appearances for a few months at a time). Not sure what will end up in the bag by the end of the summer.

I'm loving my new putter though. Tad Moore does it right!

In my bag:

Driver: Mizuno T-Zoid Titanium 8.5 degree with a Tour Stiff Graphite shaft.

Fairway wood: Titleist Pro-Trajectory 15 degree 3 wool with a Tour Stiff Graphite Shaft

Irons: 2-PW Tommy Armour 845's I bought in 1992. Dynamic gold Steel shafts S300

Wedge: Merit 52 degree dual flanged wedge.

Sand Wedge: Cleveland 56 degree

Putter: Wilson 8813 Blade.(Best putter ever produced...but sometimes I enjoy my Ping Zing)

14 clubs. I have a back up Driver....Callaway Great Big Bertha 8 Degree and a back up fairway wood.....an old Ram Persimmon 4 wood.

I would not get rid of these babies for anything. I guess my handicap, if I kept one would be 10-12.

can't go wrong with Titleist - 975 was/is a solid driver - all about consistancy for me, whether it be irons or woods - like having any idea where the ball is gonna go.

irons - T Armour 845's - 10 yrs old but I have the exact distance dialed in pretty nicely

D - Callaway X460tour - hit a bunch of drivers and lI oved this club

FW - Tour Edge Exotics 3 - an absolutely sick club I can bang out almost like a driver

SW - Cleveland

P - oddessey white hot with a fat grip - helps bring my weak putting game up a bit,

balls - as many Pro V1's as I can get my hands on.........

handicap - 8

I always knew the technology on woods had improved but I must say I I didn't realize the same thing had happened with irons to the same extent. After reading through this thread it appears I was completely wrong. I'm still playing my 15 year old Titleist DCI's. Perhaps it is time for an upgrade

When you hit a bad shot when it's 40 degrees outside the new irons don't sting in your hands as much.-maybe it's going from steel to grahpite shafts. I do think it is less important to have new irons than woods. Statistics show that with all the improved technology handicaps have not gone down over the last 20 years. I got all new woods last year and although they are easier to hit, they go 15 yards further, and I have more fun playing with them, my index has not gone down.

No doubt. I made a bet a few years back that I could play one of our local courses without hitting anything more than a 7 iron off the tee and still score in the 80's. The entire day I did not pull anything but the 7,8,9,PW,GW,LW, and putter out of the bag. On a course that I normally shoot in the lower 80's I shot an 87. There was only one hole that gave me a problem as I had to lay up on a par five so that I could hit about 165 to cross water. I was laying four with with another 200 or so to go. I did end up with an 8 on that hole but that was the only out of whack hole for the entire day.

If you like the 990s...you will love the 755s. I hear the new AP1 and AP2 are the best irons Titleist has ever made. I couldn't be happier with the 755s. My HCI is a 2 but I still found the 990s unforgiving...especially the long irons. That's where the 755s are sweet. The 3-5 irons are the best feeling long irons I've ever hit.

In my bag:

Callaway X460 Tour Grafalloy Blue X

Titleist 906F4 3 wood

Titleist 585 H

Titleist 755 PW-3

Titleist Vokey 52* & 56* spin milled

Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2

I started with a set of AC (Accushnet) 108s. I almost wish I could play a round with those again just to see what I could do. Talk about unforgiving. Went through the DTRs and a couple set of DCIs and blades before the 990s. They keep getting better so I have no doubt that I'll be impressed. Just need to wait until the demo truck comes around so I can get fitted. I actually like the 990 long irons. I started the season at a 2 but its been rising steadily all season thanks to our regular weekend course killing me. Played a couple other courses within the last few weeks that will bring it back down a bit.

I have a friend who is a 2 index. He collects antique wooden clubs and goes out and plays 18 with them now and then. It costs him maybe two strokes. If you're good, you can play with any clubs.

I learned to play on true blades. I still feel like I would play pretty much the same with them. It's about the swing, not the club.

But then, when it comes to the driver I use now, I really feel like the newer club makes an enormous difference. I have tremendous confidence hitting this club compared to my old club.
