Randall
Acid. Anything acidic. Also a lot of sweets like donuts. It used to wake me up at night and I couldn't breathe. Acid coming up has damaged my vocal chords. Stay on top of it with diet nd medication. Does spooning off fat help?
wiegie
greasy food did it to me most Mine got so bad that it ended up scaring my esophagus causing it to be narrower than what it should normally be. I had problems with food getting stuck when I swallowed and eventually got referred by my doctor to a specialist who basically performed the equivalent of angioplasty on my esophagus to stretch it out. Following the specialist's recommendation, I now take a Prilosec every morning and I don't really have problems anymore. General Itals
Chicken is a big trigger food for me although it doesnt' happen every time. It's also happened with Chinese food, especially leftovers. I'm not sure if what I even have is acid reflux. The second I eat something that doesn't agree with me, my throat tightens up, I have trouble swallowing and my saliva turns from clear to very thick and milky white. My stomach and chest experience no pain at all. If I end up puking, I'm usually good for the rest of the night and can even eat the foods that were bothering me previously. Guess it's time to quit putting off that doctors visit and get this taken care of. Anybody know if what I have is acid reflux?

General Itals
I'm no doctor, but that ain't acid reflux. Yeah, it didn't sound like it from what I've been reading, but I can't find something which matches my symptoms. Definitely time to go see the Doc. Fortunately, I can go months without an episode, but when it hits... Edited September 6, 2008 by General Itals

The only difference is that I take ProTonix. Also comes in a generic version now. Seems to be working well. Bit of advice as well. Do not eat late at night. Your body builds up acid naturally while you sleep and adding stomach acid to digest your food worsens this and will affect you the day after. Stay away from soda or other carbonation (beer) if at all possible.
rajncajn
Stress triggers mine much more than food does. I can pretty much eat what I want, but when I get stressed out (which is a lot lately) it flares up really bad.

Stay away from soda or other carbonation (beer) if at all possible. Good advice here. My doc also said to limit alcohol and tomato based foods. I had to go in last week as I have been living with a constant sore throat for a couple of months. He thinks it's the reflux irritating the lower area of the throat but I do have a precription for an X-Ray that I need to schedule. He gave me a couple months supply of Prevacid but you have to remember to take it 30 minutes prior to eating, once a day. I can't remember that. I think I'll ask for the generic Prilosec and just take one a day regardless of when I eat.
BeeR
booze the worst by far also coffee and sweets some. Oddly hot sauce and spicy stuff not so much. Basically the better I eat the less it bothers me so it's kind of forced me into a pretty good diet.
cliaz
I had a horrible form of acid reflux where at night when i was asleep, the stomach acid would dump up my throat and into my nasal cavity. You want to talk about pain, that hurt.
Beaumont
I take nexium everyday. Before I did, I had bouts where the acid damaged my vocal chords (like Randall) to the extent I could not talk and I also would get bouts of hiccups lasting for days at a time ... Bad mojo. Seahawks21
A topic that hits too close to home. I get reflux from everything but water. I'm usually fine through breakfast, but after lunch I'll have it until I sleep. Coffee, tobacco, alcohol and Josh Gordon are the worst things for it, rivaled by sauces (marinara and salsa are by far the worst). Every night it feels like I'm having a heart attack, except I can still breathe so I know its just reflux. Starches make it horrible (breads, rice, noodles). Any meat other than fish. I'm on medication, but the thing I found that really helps is apples and apple juice. The acid from apples fights the acid in your system, where the acid from citrus fruits absolutely makes it terrible. Eat apples and drink LOTS of apple juice. Check out applesforhealth.com for more info. I have also found that lots of water helps. I get to go back in a month and see how much damage has been caused. Fun times!! That really doesn't sound like acid reflux at all. Man I have acid reflux to the point of a hiatal hernia and don't have symptoms nearly this bad. Y'all are seriously f-ed up. Mine was this bad as well, I couldn't sleep, I basically couldn't eat or drink anything (even water) until I started taking medication. Originally OTC stuff worked OK but not anymore. As long as I take a pill everyday it doesn't really bother me.

It started to worry me as I was hoping I didn't have throat cancer or something. Went to the specialist and he stuck a tube up my nose and down my throat(Hateful experience) and said I had acid reflux. He did prescribe Prevacid for me also and it went away. Never saw a rule where you need to take it before a meal. I just take it every morning (No I don't eat breakfast). My ear, nose and throat doc said to take it in the PM. Screw him! I'm lookin' for a new ear, nose and throat doc! He was a jackass anyway.
BeeR
It is still reflux, but once damage has been done to your lining, symptoms get much worse. ? Hiatal hernia means such damage has occurred FYI - I've had mine for years and never had many of these symptoms y'all are describing, esp "feeling like I'm having a heart attack" - never heard of such a symptom for acid reflux (I've had a heart attack too FYI although a small one). Whatever, just IMO that it sounds like something else going on there and I'd get a 2d opinion.
Flip_Side
If I drink about 3 nights in a row I'll usually have a bad case of acid reflux for the whole day after. Not just a few beers I'm talking about getting totally tanked, that's what sets it off for me.
DemonKnight
Its yer bodies tryin to tell you something. Dump the constant Beef and Pork. It's not natural to eat with every meal.
