muck
From a daily "morality / spirituality / theology" email I receive: "According to an article in The Kansas City Star, tips on child porn are increasing from 3,200 in 1998 to more than 85,000 last year. So who are the monsters doing this to our children? You might be surprised. Authorities say many of the people caught with, or producing, child porn have no criminal background. They're most often middle-age white men with good jobs and families." ...what is not said in this blurb is that (I believe) these numbers only apply to Kansas City...and I believe these are annual stats... But, still, a 26x increase in child porn activity in a decade?

This one has a vested interest in making people believe things are worse than they are.
Big John
Another factor is that more of it is being reported instead of just swept under the rug.
dmarc117
so my question is......were these guys always like this or has the internet and ease of access caused this? which leads to another larger question. does this just show that with a lack of laws and law enforcement, would our society crumble into chaos and anarchy? I'm not belittling the seriousness of the crime, just the insinuation that it's so widespread. These emails have a constant theme of the sky is falling, the world is ending, the End of Days is upon us blah blah blah. I'll wait until I see some authoritative stats, thanks. This seems like a popular theme in the tailgate, as well. Seems par for the course.

alexgaddis
I think something that might skew these numbers is the rise of underage kids sending naked pictures on their cell phones to each other...I believe they can get charged with child porn by receiving a picture... evil_gop_liars
Another factor is that more of it is being reported instead of just swept under the rug. I think this is very true. I also think the laws are broader reaching too. I recently read an article of a 14 year old girl that took naked pictures of herself and posted them on myspace and she got charged with child porn. I wonder what the increase is on children getting charged with child porn.

She will probably have to register as a sex offender.

How crazy is that ... you want to frame someone for something, buy a disposable camera phone with an untraceable number, take some pictures of whomever and then forward the naked pictures to whomever it is that you want to frame. TimC
How people are still Catholics is beyond me. What does it take to wake you up to the evils if not that? The Pope should be in prison. Edited April 2, 2009 by TimC
Vinatieri Is God
You can't be charged for receiving it on your phone as long as you didn't request it be sent. Only the sender is responsible. Happened to a bunch of kids locally.
tazinib1
I've had conversations about this topic several times with a wide variety of people. I always stand by my idea that this isn't anything new. The only thing that is new, is the overwhelming amount of information access. 100 years ago all you had was word of mouth and the newspaper. 50 years ago you had telephone and television. Look at what we have today. I don't think its a spike in petaphiles, but a tremendous open window now available to the public. The same could be said about serial killers and rapes. People just don't evolve into petaphiles, rapists and killers. We've been like this for 1k's of years.

From Wikipedia - In law enforcement, the term "pedophile" is generally used to describe those accused or convicted of the sexual abuse of a minor. I not actually sure what a petafile is.
