Wolverines Fan
Per chicagobreakingsports.com By Dan Pompei and Brad Biggs The Bears and Mike Martz may have taken another step up the aisle Saturday when Martz traveled to Nashville to have dinner with quarterback Jay Cutler, according to multiple sources close to the situation. If the meeting went well, it's possible Martz could be announced as the Bears offensive coordinator in the very near future. The former head coach of the Rams met with coach Lovie Smith, general manager Jerry Angelo and assistant coaches on Friday. Concerns about Martz passing too much for the Bears' liking appear to have been allayed. Cutler's endorsement is an interesting piece of the puzzle. He has been involved in the interview process with previous candidates, and he initially was lobbying hard for the team to hire Jeremy Bates, his old quarterbacks coach with the Broncos. If the talks with Martz break down, the Bears could turn to Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers, who interviewed for the position Thursday. Interviewing another candidate or candidates also is a possibility, but the Bears would prefer to end the chase sooner rather than later. BeeR
What a hideous mistake this would be. Martz is one of the most overrated OCs ever. I will laugh if this happens but feel sympathetic for Bear fans. And avoid Bear players even more than I previously planned.
Chief
From having to put up with Martz before... 1. Martz = Who's Forte? 2. Cutler setting a new NFL record for sacks. Sucks for Bears fans, but I guess as a Lions fan it'd be ok...
DMD
What a hideous mistake this would be. Martz is one of the most overrated OCs ever. I will laugh if this happens but feel sympathetic for Bear fans. And avoid Bear players even more than I previously planned. I still think Martz can be a decent and maybe very good OC, but he needs the right situation and especially the players to run the system. He never had the QB in DET (at the very least) and in SF he was just a square peg in a round hole with a void of any players. But agreed - CHI would not be the place for his system. I could see Martz in ARI if Warner was there by all means. Martz could potentially work in any place that has good weather or a dome and the elements of a great passing game. CHI has historically been about defense and rushing because that's what the climate there is all about and it sort of reflects the city as well. CHI is one of the worst fits I can think of. Wolverines Fan
The plot thickens... Per Profootballtalk.com Smith has wanted Martz from "day one" Posted by Mike Florio on January 31, 2010 1:00 PM ET As the Bears move closer to possibly hiring Mike Martz to take over the offense in Chicago, we're picking up more details regarding the behind-the-scenes maneuverings between coach Lovie Smith and G.M. Jerry Angelo. As we hear it, Smith has wanted to hire Martz from "day one." And that makes sense, given that Martz once hired Smith to run the defense in St. Louis. But Angelo was opposed to the move, and Angelo relented only after multiple candidates (including some whose names never surfaced publicly) rebuffed the team's advances. Even now, Angelo apparently is trying to create obstacles. We're told it was Angelo who insisted that Martz meet face-to-face with quarterback Jay Cutler, and we're also told that Smith paid for Martz's air fare to Tennessee in order to make the meeting happen. Momentum is now building for Martz in large part because, as we're told, Angelo wanted to hire Chargers tight ends coach/assistant head coach Rob Chudzinski for the job. Angelo was so confident that Chudzinski would take the job that Angelo had no viable backup plan when Chudzinski said thanks but no thanks. If/when Martz is hired, look for Angelo to distance himself from the move. The thinking is that Angelo will try to pin any failures in 2010 on Smith, in the hopes that Angelo won't get fired -- and that he'll have a chance to hire another head coach if Smith gets the boot. This season has disaster written all over it.

I agree with DMD - Chicago is not the place for the likes of Martz. Also, is he broke? What's with Lovie stumping up the air fare?

Brentastic
This if officiall - FYI. I for one am very excited about this as a Bear fan. Martz has had success at every franchise as an OC, not sure why anyone would not like this move. It's a hell of a lot better than what we had and the prospects we've talked to. I own Jay Cutler in one dynasty league and couldn't be happier. We can expect Cutler's passing numbers to go back up. I think Mike Martz will be good for Jay Cutler, the same way he was good for Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger.

Because you either don't know much about Mike Martz or Bears football: throwing a 40 yard slant on 3rd and 2 will NOT work in late November and December. Wannestadt tried making the team pass first and it failed. He turned Erik Kramer into a Pro Bowler and it failed. The only thing to like about this is it puts Lovie squarely on the hot seat for next year, and given the quality of depth still available at HC (Cowher, Gruden, Billick) it could mean good things if it doesn't work out. However, if Angelo manages to avoid being fired with Lovie that might be all for naught.

bpwallace49
cutler better get his life insurance paid up . . cause behind that line and Martz's offense he is gonna get KILLED. Forte gets a bump for PPR. Kevin Jones was leading the league for RB receptions before he got hurt in Detroit. Add in no early picks and below average receiver talent . . . . . he has quite the task ahead of him.
Wolverines Fan
It's official boys and girls. http://www.chicagobears.com/index.html Bears hire Mike Martz Per profootballtalk.com Posted by Mike Florio on February 1, 2010 3:59 PM ET The coach that no one wanted finally has gotten the job that no one wanted. Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. As we hear it, coach Lovie Smith wanted Martz from the outset of the search process, but G.M. Jerry Angelo resisted. With multiple candidates declining the job and/or a chance to interview for it, Martz eventually became the only real option. As Larry Mayer of the team's official web site points out, Smith now has three former head coaches on his staff -- Martz, offensive line coach Mike Tice (Vikings 2001-05), and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli (Lions 2006-08). And if they don't help Lovie turn things around, the four of them can look for work together in 2011. Pope Flick
Implying it'll work other times?\ Yeah, they'll have nice success with it in September and October, but once winter rolls in a passing game cannot hang. Look at Wannestadt's teams: strong start, late season swoon because their over reliance on the passing game killed them when gusts were hitting 20-30 mph.
