If you thought paying for luggage was bad

well, I think that space is more valuable than in the cargo hold, so on a certain level it definitely makes sense -- at least once you've decided to go down the pay for luggage path in the first place.

with that particular airline, it's obviously in conjunction with a one cent base fare thing, meaning everything is a la carte. seems like a dumb model to me, but if that's how you want to go, you're going to HAVE to charge for any and all luggage.

actually I think I agree with you that it fits that model...but you know what will happen that now will open the door for the "normal" model airlines to do the same thing...not like they couldn't have already done so but it seems like when a door like that opens others are very quick to walk thru

On the way back from Austin recently, some buffoon brought a gigantic holdall on the plane and spent five minutes trying to stuff it into an overhead bin before being forced to check the thing. Carry-ons are WAY too big and should be half the size. This is why there's such a hugh fight to get on the plane first - securing bin space. Charge for carry-ons and make the first checked bag free is a much better way to go.

The difference being that checked luggage needs to be handled while carry-on luggage is handled by the passenger.

Was going to bring up RyanAir. They are(were) one of the only profitable airlines in Europe, largely because of the "a la carte" type of service. Base fare is dirt cheap, but, everything else is an additional fee. Want a pillow and balnket, fee.. want snacks.. fee, baggage.. fee, etc.

Really not that bad as you know what you are getting and you only pay for what you use.

southwest is da best

My preferred airline for domestic travel.

According to CNN...

Sen. Chuck Schumer vowed Monday to offer legislation that would prohibit airlines from charging passengers a fee to carry on luggage.

Spirit Airlines recently announced a carry on fee ranging from $30 to $45 per bag, becoming the first U.S carrier to charge for carry on luggage.

The New York Democrat said in an interview on CNN that the new fees "step over the line" and if the Treasury Department does not answer his plea to prevent the fees from being implemented he is certain that the legislation will go through the Senate and the House "like a hot knife through butter."

Now that sounds like government overreach.

Completely agree. Government needs to stay out of this and let the market take care of it. What Schumer may not know is that Spirit dropped it's fares more than this extra charge. I like the a la carte approach to buying travel.

What I think is funny here is that people forget that consumers can always vote with their wallets. If you don't like what Spirit is doing, fly another airline.

If you really don't have another choice, it's their prerogative to charge what they think they can for their services. If consumers think they are getting screwed they will spend their dollars elsewhere. Spirit will adjust if that happens or they will go out of business.

From Spirit.....

To our valued customers,

We have all seen how carry-on baggage has gotten out of control. Longer security lines and boarding process, injuries due to overcrowded overhead bins, delayed flights and passenger frustration has become commonplace.

At Spirit, we are always looking for new ways to save you money and improve the customer experience. We recently announced our latest innovation, which is designed to relieve the carry-on crisis, saving you time and money.

Our solution to the carry-on crisis:

Lowered fares

Lower checked bag fees

Give everyone a free personal item allowance

Allow customers to carry on an additional bag for a fee and give them

priority boarding so they have time and space to stow their extra bag

Everyone Wins!

We expect total prices to be lower

Security lines will move faster

The boarding process will be smoother

Deplaning will be faster

Passenger and employee safety is improved with less over-stuffed bins

And none of the government's business.

And yet, will garner public outrage none the less because people are stupid. We've gotten so used to being overcharged and then getting "free" things we may or may not want or need thrown in that it almost seems like a gimmick when someone just charges you for what you use.

I mean, it's totally logical but that doesn't mean dick.

One airline charges you $100 but is nice enough to let you bring your bag on for free. Another charges you $80 but are freaking shysters because they charge you $20 if you want to bring on a bag.

from CNN...

On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, introduced a bill that would amend the tax code to eliminate a loophole that he and four other Senators say allows airlines to avoid taxes on certain fees.

Hmm, maybe this deserves a second look afterall....
